Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation 56 Main Street SAVE WASTE PAPER Mt lllCAL AMI DKNTAt EXPENSES The law allows a deduction for a limited amount of expenses actually pnld durinK the taxable year for medical, hospital, or dental care of a taxpayer, his wife, or dependents. Whether you may deduct your medical and dental expenses in your return depends on the method you use in making the return.

If you use your Withholding Receipt Form W-2 (Rev.) as a return, or if you file Form 1040 and use plther the tax table or the standard deduction, then you may not deduct any medical or dental expenses because you will receive an allowance In lieu of such deduction. However, if you file Form 1040 and itemize your deduction on page 4, you may Include your medical and dental expenses to the extent ollowd by law. These expenses, after subtracting any reimbursements (from insurance or otherwise) actually received in the same year, are deductible on page 4 of the return to the extent that they exceed 5 per cent of your adjusted gross Income, which is the amount that you enter as item 5 on page 1 of the return. However, the deduction is limited to $1,250 if you claim only one exemption in item 1, page 1 of your return, or $2,500 if you claim more than one. You are required to furnish the name and address of each person to whom the payment for medical expenses was made, and the amount and approximate date of the actual payment in each case.

The method of determining the deduction may be illustrated by this txnmple: Mr. and Mrs. A. file a joint return on Form 1040. Their adjusted gross income is $3,000.

During the year, they spent $500 for medical care of their family, but received $150 reimbursement from a health Insurance polio. Their medical deduction is $200, figured as follows: Spent $500 Less insurance received 150 Net expenditure $350 Less 5 per cent of adjusted gross income (5 per cent of $3,000) 150 Balance deductible $200 The expenses which may be considered for this deduction are any actual payments made for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease; also, any amount actually paid for hospitalization, accident or health in surance, and for membership in an association furnishing cooperative or so-called free-choice medical lervice, or eoup hospitalization, and clinical care. These expenses may be deducted in the year actu ally paid, regardless of when the expense was incurred. Amounts paid for operations, or treatment affecting any portion of the body, including obstetrical expenses and expenses of X-ray or therapy treatments, are deemed to be for the purpose of "affecting any structure or function of the body," and are therefore deductible. Allowable deductions will be confined strictly to expenses incurred "primarily for the prevention or alleviation of a physical or mental defect or illness." This will include payment of expenses for hospital, nursing (including nurses' board where paid by the taxpayer), and medical, laboratory, surgical, dental, and other diagnostic and healing services.

It will also include the cost of eyeglasses, hearing aids, aids, drugs, medical and dntal supplies (including artificial teeth or artitficial limbs), and of ambulance hire and travel "primarily for and essential to the rendition of the medical service or to the prevention or alleviation of a physical or mental defect or illness." It will not include funeral and burial expenses. In general, all medical and dental expenses actually paid or reimbursed during the same year must be offset against each other in figuring the medical deduction for that year. However, if a medical expense de. duction is taken In one year, and a reimbursement for that specific expense is received in a later year, then the -reimbursement in the later year must be added to the taxpayer's income in that year, instead of being used in the medical expense calculation.
