Yenchick heads TPA Phil Ochs commits suicide. NEW YORK (UPI) Phil Ochs, a folk singer whose songs of protest articulated much of the youthful opposition to the Vietnam war in the early 1960s, hanged himself in a relative's home in New York Friday morning, police said. Police, who termed the death a probable suicide, said an investigation would continue. Although authorities could give no motive for the action, a family friend said the singer-lyricist had been depressed for a long time "mainly because the words weren't coming to him anymore." Police said Ochs, 35, was found hanging from a belt attached to the bedroom door in his sister's house in the Far Rockaway section of Queens at about 10 a.m. Ochs began singing professionally in Greenwich Village coffeehouses and clubs and quickly establisheda reputation for writing music with hardhitting messages.

Ochs' lyrics eclipsed his singing style. For many young people growing up in the early 1960s, his songs "Talking Vietnam," "Love Me, I'm a Liberal," "I Declare the War is Over" articulated the bitter anger and opposition to the Vietnam war as much as anything written or sung by Bob Dylan or Joan Baez, giants of the period who retain their popularity today. But Ochs never became as commercially successful as either Dylan or Baez, though both singers sang his tunes. Pottsville Negotiating John R. Barrett, a member of the negotiating committee for the Minersville Area Teachers Association, announced an open invitation has been extended to the Minersville Area School Board to meet any number of times until a contract settlement is reached.

A letter was sent to Harold Campion, chief negotiator for the school board, stating that the teachers realize the board must adopt a budget by June 30 for the 1976-1977 school term. The association states it is willing to meet with the board negotiators at any reasonable date and time, given three day notice, until budget finalization. The teachers state that their contract is only a small part of the total budget and they feel the board and taxpayers would appreciate having all financial loose ends tied up by June 30th. Thomas Aiken, Tamaqua Town Chairman, introduced dignitaries from the Tamaqua Area. Steve Postupack, of Rush Township, the Republican standard bearer for U.S. Congress in the Sixth District, spoke of new faces needed in Washington to start a new government for the beginning of the third century.

Robert Scheipe, a convention delegate, spoke on behalf of the Republican state candidates, Patricia Crawford, for State treasurer and Patrick Gleason, for auditor general. The officer said he was unable to see anyone inside the car at first, but when he approached he observed a man slumped forward in the seat. McAnany said he tapped on the window but could not arouse the individual and then opened the door when the man, who turned out to be the owner, Ross, fell partially out of the car. At the time, McAnany related, the driver stepped on the car accelerator, causing the vehicle to lunge backwards, trapping the officer in the open door and dragging him some 35 feet along the curb and sidewalk. In the process, Ross' car struck the patrol car McAnany was using, damaging it. McAnany was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital by detective Repp and examined for abrasions and swelling of the right ankle and directed to return for x-rays on Friday.
