M. BKTURXIMO. Connect soever Junction, with Mall and JHanialiurc Eiprnw North. Art. Work for Women.

i now iaiie wuo nave organized an asso ciation for the encouragement of art-imlns-try among women are no donlit disposed to listen to ingestions, and to welc me any thing which wonltl open new fields of lalxir for the clata they are interested in. Have Ihww ladies observed that, while the eolti- vatinn of flowers in our cities has of reent years spread rapidly, no imnrovement in ao artistic direction has Wen made over the old-fashioned flowerpot! A vessel of chaste and elopnut form for (lower-culture cannot he found, unless the recently-designed box with tile ornaments Is an exception. These tile boxes, however, are very costly, and at beat but inadequately meet the demand. We need vases or pots made of ordinary tinglmed iottery, simply and tastefully decorated, and of various sires and shapes so as to suit cither the window.ledpre, the veranda, the balcony, or the cihrt-yard. and afforded at low prices.

There are now In some of our court-yard urns of painted iron that are certainly nply enouch, and costly pots of very vulgar and florid ornamentation may occasionally be seen at the shops of the dealers; but vessels of inexpensive material and pure decoration suitable for the pnrpone described are not to be found Refore window flower-culture can be very genera1, a good deal will have to be learned by those who now every spring permit their hope and faith to triumph over their experiences in former years but eventually It will come to be understood that flowers wi'l not flourish when balced on hot stones, as we see attempted in every street in our cities, and the fact that y7ee-tion must lx made of plant-, governed by the conditions of exposure to sun or shade, will yet gnde the persistent flower-lover into the practical wisdom ont of which his windows shall In time be brought to bloom In brilliant hanging parterrtu, charming to those who look upon them and sources of endless pleasure to their owners. When this time ia reached, tasteful vessel for the pnrpose will be much sought for; in truth, the invention and manufacturers of the right sort of vases or pot will do much to- We pastime. Who, then.witlgivong artistic structures which shall set forth our geraniums and verbenas, otir'rosea and heliotropes, our chrysanthemums and fuschiaa, onr ole-auders and lilies, with added glory. But it Is easy to misconceive our idea. Attempts have lnn made and are made to introduce fancy flower-pots, but these schemes have all started out with two defectslack ot taste and want of gumption.

Hie few feeble experiments in this direction Lave given ns showy vessels that are either detestable with many glittering colors, or which violate an imperative canon of taste by imitating someihiog to which they do not and should not bear likeness. A flowerpot that weakly preteuds to resemble a log of wood, or that puts on the form of a willow-ware basket, or tries to pass itself off for something which it is not, is in art an abomination, and shonld never disfigure either window or garden-stand. The rude red pota of the florist are preferable. The vases we have in mind are something wholly different truth, simplicity, and pure taste, Wing their essential characteristics. There are forma of the Greek vase well adapted for the purpose, and Greek decoration is peculiarly appropriate.

Examples of these rases can seen in almost any art-museum, or in any book upon pottery. The material should not be costly the ordinary clay used in our unglaxed pottery is good enough and the decoration should lie severe rather than ornate, or else there is danger that the passion for vulgar display rather than true art-taste will he encouraged. There is now everywhere a great mania for decorating pottery. We have not seen any products of the new-Wrn aeal that called for special commendation but decoration that looks rather rade ft the mantel-piece would do Yery well for the out-of-door flower-vase. So, ladies who are in full tide of tliis new fashion may turn their skill and real to a good practical account by introducing examples of flower-pots aud vases calculated not only to gratify and cultivate the art-sense, but to make flower-culture a new delight.
