SECTION III THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL MEMPHIS SUNDAY MORNING OCTOBER 29 1950 Texas Juggernauts To 35-7 Win Over Underdog Baylor Edges Texas Ags 27-20 MINT AiM LEAD OVERCOME BY BEADS David Bloom An Official's-Eye View Passes Responsible For All Four Scores FUMBLES HELP VICTORS By DAVE CHEAVKNS Associated Pre Kporta Writer WACO Oct Underdog Baylor came from behind to defeat Texas A and 27 to 20 here Saturday with Larry Isbell's precision passing furnishing the needed edge A and went into the game a two- to threc-touchdown favorite TTie Aggies rolled into a quick 13-point lead early in the game played before a homecoming crowd of 37 000 But Isbell's passing magic responsible for all of Baylor touchdowns put the Bears out ahead 20 to 13 at halftime Aggie Fumbles Costly Numerous costly fumbles by A and were a big help to Baylor but the Bears outplayed the Aggies much of the way Bob Smith's 69-yard blazing run through the entire Baylor defense gave the Aggies a one-touchdown lead before game was a minute old Smith appeared to be stopped on the first play from scrimmage but slipped away and streaked down-field untouched Darrow Hooper's placement was good The Aggie backs were shredding the Baylor line but their second touchdown came on Dick Gar-denial's pass to Andy Hillhouse It climaxed a 77-yard surge downfield led by Glenn Lippman Bill Tidwell and Smith Baylor's defenders were missing many apparently easy tackles Hooper's try for point was no good Farms Starts It Off Baylor's first scoring drive started on its 28 with Richard Parma's 30-yard scoot through the line putting the Bear passing machine into position to roll Isbell showing neat ball-handling got off one to Jim Jeffrey for 15 and the touchdown heave was to James Parker Dickerson's kick wide Then the Bears tied it up cashing in on a fumble by Lippman recovered on the Baylor 44 by Terry Downs Isbell passed to Parker from the Aggie 41 for the Dickerson's kick was good The Boys Want To Play It Clean When Games Are Tough Fouls Are Few Bob King a man who is as close to football as anyone you know thinks the game itself changed any but the attitude of the players has and all to the good Bob King is a former football player and a present Southeastern Conference official Furthermore he is principal of Memphis Central High School and has a decided interest in a football team he says game is better because it is cleaner The rules of course are slanted that way but the boys are the ones who have to do the right thing The tendency is to play well inside the rules I think that if the rules were left alone as in everyone would be better off too much burden on the officials Actually I believe there could be some kind of technical call on every play run But the officials take the attitude that out there to keep one team from taking unfair advantage of the other can ruin a football game by being too technical as everyone knows Take the rule about blocking with forearms to be held close to the body even after contact has been made A kid will block step back and naturally drop his arms It would be silly to call a penalty on that Why Be So Technical? are others" King went on as foolish For instance in a college game on a rainy day after the referee had wiped off the ball the defensive center slyly daubed it with mud again That called for a 15-yard penalty but it was only funny not serious The same applies to a center or lineman edging the ball back a little bit the use of slowing up the game marching off yards for that one? players realize nowadays that out there to see that the game is played in the proper way It is very rarely indeed that we get a complaint from the players themselves or even from the coaches The squawks come from the grandstand quarterbacks harder the ball game the fewer the fouls I worked the Notre Dame-Tulane game for example in which the boys were out there to win There were very few fouls The same was true of the Mississippi State-Tennessee game Both were close and the kids kept their minds strictly on football" The Kids Are Smarter in the one-sided games that officials have the most trouble That's when the rough stuff and usually by the team that's well behind They get mad because losing and try to get even maybe by throwing a few fists if an official is on top of the play he can stop this by being firm Not always but most times both in college and prep school the footbaU playing kids are more Intelligent very rarely any bickering across the scrimmage line or cursing The officials try to hold this down but the players themselves who determine their conduct And been good like to say too that you see a new spirit after the games The boys go off the field together in a friendly sort of way with few recriminations Yards Hard To Get Back my considered opinion that the coaches and players alike have come to realize that they afford to give up the yards assessed for fouls In the end they have to work that much harder to get back I was particularly gratified at a recent game our Central team played with Montgomery-Bell Academy in Nashville when only one infraction was called during the entire game think everyone knows the Southeastern Conference is trying to do as near perfect a job as possible on officiating Commissioner Bernie Moore and George Gardner who is in charge of officials have worked untiringly to smooth out the systenftor training officials with a school rules quizzes physical tests and actual on-the-spot inspections and criticisms The officials are a group of high-class people and just as anxious to do it right as the conference the coaches and the players are And on the whole I believe they Right-o Robert And at least given the 50-yard line referees a little better view of what happens down on the field SURE HE CAUGHT An interception by Bob Cross Arkansas defensive back snatches the ball right out of the hands of Mai Cook -Vanderbilt end in the game at Little Rock Vanderbilt won 14-13 Ftff interception and then ran its lead to 21-0 with a 65-yard second period touchdown drive Two second half Longhorn scores resulted from a 68-yard drive and guard Don Menasco's recovery of a blocked punt
