to 7 today before a disappointing crowd that was all hut lost in spacious Legion Stadium The setbsck waa South-western'a third of the season and second in the Dixie Conference group Twin deficiencies In passing and punting that have hounded Southwestern all season grasped them in a tight embrace again and pulled them into the depths of disaster A pass from Horace Guttery to Rues Garrett brought the first touchdown Tom Everetts skirted end for the second and two of the seven Lynx passes that were intercepted were responsible for the other two Captain Ray Fayet taking one across on a heave 'from Guttery and Fenny Penrod hauling -the final over the goal from the two yard line Two extra points were made one on a penalty one on Peto Allen's placement Tho Lynx alternately tight and loose on defense found their attacking form for but one brief moment in tho third quarter when they surged down the field 78 yards for their lone score Henry Hammond taking a pass over the goal line from Harvey Jones and Jones hooting the extra point from placement lynx Try Kicking The £ynx got In a hole early in the game and stayed thera most of the time Figuring on using a stiff wind to advantage the lynx elected a kicking game in the first lusrter but their punters failed to ronnec in the expected manner On the other hand the line repulsed everything Howard had in the way of ground attack throwing six run ning plays for a total loss of IS yards right at the start And then tha Lynx weakened and Howard came along A short kirk put them in lynx territory re pulsed once at the 12 yard line j-inward came hack with indomitable spirit to start another drive They advanced to the lynx 13 yard line were penalised 5 and found Southwestern's vulnerable point It waa pass defense Guttery faded hark Garrett went wide to the corner of the field and the ball nestled in his handa after an accu rate toss over the defending half-harks head and Howard was off their second touchdown waa smooth A brand new bnrk field of fine blockers and good runners started tearing away at the lynx terminals Trying first one end then the other their touchdown march from midfield waa accomplished on four first downs despits a pair of five yard penalties Everetts acor-' ing run waa a gem of fine shifty footwork aided and abetted by good blocking that took out the Lynx left end and halfback Ilkejio body's business Lynx Show Ufa Southwestern's pass attack had showed a few signs of life in the first half Tha Lynx needed pass ing if they needed anything to score at this point and tho boome- rang came early in the third period Howard pushed the lynx back with fine punting until Southwestern waa backed upon their own two yard lint Jonea tried a surprise pass but Howard was ready Estes stepped into tha ball on the 10 yard I line and ran it bark to tha three Howerd wee penalized 15 yards on I the next play Guttery found Well anyhow they were the Columbia Baking Stars or 1900 a fast team of local furious Washington and Leo team today unleashed a surprising attack coupled with their well known lnpenetrablo defense to spring a startling 7-0 upset over the University of Kentucky team top-rater of tho Southeast Conference The Generals outplayed Kentucky throughout almost the entire contest Their line defensp weakened only in tho closing minutes of the first 'half when Kentucky drove to the 30-yard line and a pass put the ball on the 15 as tha period ended The score came In the opening minutes of tho third period on a 52-yard drive which followed Sawyer's 36-yard run back of the kickoff A pass Eeaton to Ellis put tha ball on tho Kentucky 32 and Seaton and Sawyers plunged it to tho nine-yard line from where Sawyers went across with a shuttle pass from Seaton Kentucky resorted to a desperate aerial attack in tha final quarter but the alert Washington and Lee backs broke up almost every at Fayet fine target away out on the right side and deposited the ball nearly in hia captain's the face the Lynx took to the air again but this time with little precision Hick Ewing the Memphis boy who plays halfback for Howard stepped into one of Edlngton's passes nn Southwestern's 28 yard line The Lynx held tried another pass and this time Bob Thompson grabbed it on the 18 Guttery slid around end for 12 yards and Penrod punched tha last touchdown across Anderson of Howard intercepted another Lynx pass just as the game ended Howard made 13 first downs to the Lynx's 7 completed four pa axes out of 11 Southwestern worked five passes and had three tncom-plrte but the astounding total Illinois 6 to 0 in an intersectional football battle waged before 35000 spectators in tha cavernous Municipal Stadium Tha Cadets struck a decisive blow for tho eastern football colors on tha neutral shores of Lake Erie with a decisive brilliantly executed attack featured by the all-round work of Texas Jack Buckler Going into tha fray as the underdogs the Soldiers repeatedly swept their Big Ten rivals off their feet and then staved off a long passing attack that gained 159 yards without producing a point for Illinois in the last half But for a technicality and a fumble within scoring range the Army would have doubled its margin at leasL Three points on a beautiful place kick through tha uprights by Travis Brown in the second period were wiped off the scoreboard when the officials decided after a lengthy huddle that it was null and void due to the fact that Quarterback Paul Johnson had both knees Instead of one on the ground aa he held the ball for Brown's boot from tho 15-yard line The decision waa In direct contradiction to tha football code which specifically exempts the player holding the ball from being affected by tho dead ball rule Referee Keegan of Pittsfield Mass told Army officers after the game he regretted a mistake had been made and admitted Brown's field goal should have been allowed The Army's touchdown waa scored by Joe Stancook of Balmat Yt on a one-yard plunge through the line climaxing a 05-yard drive ln the first quarter Johnson's hard running off the tackles and passing to Brown and Burlingame contributed to thia scoring advance besides
