JUobbers at 2 :30 yesterday morning blew up the safe of the bank of Clarksville, dynamite, secured sum estimated at $1,500 in silver and killed John H.

Powers, the sheriff of Johnson county, who attempted to capture them. They escaped before the citizens were aware of their presence. The tragedy has stirred the people up to a high pitch of excitement. Sheriff Powers bad apartments on the second floor of the building adjoining the bank. He was awakened by a loud explosion and went down stairs to investigate.

As he reached the street he was fired upon by the robbers, who had sentries on guard while they were engaged in looting the bank. The interpid officer returned the fire with the two revolvers he had brought with him, and had fired seven shots before his wounds made him so weak that he could no longer pull the trigger, and the bandits had made good their escape. lie then, in some manner, staggered up to his room and fell across the threshold. He lived about thirty minutes after he was shot. His room-mates, Jesse and Hartsell Rheon, assisted him upon the bed after he fell.

The bank building is completely wrecked by the explosion, which was most terrific. The safe con lained about The robbers secured about 5C0 in silver and the balance of the money was badly mutilated There is no clew as to the identity of the robbers, and it is supposed they left on one of the freight trains running both ways at the time. There were several suspicious persons ea in the city, and it is sutr that they are the guilty pa There appears to have bv rom four to six men in the gang. They tied their horses in the outskirts of the town and made their way unobserved to the bank, which is situated on the north side of the public square. After gaining an entrance they destroyed the safe with dynamite, secured the money and made their way to the street.

There they were confronted by Sheriff Powers, who opened fire on them. The robbers returned it, using both revolvers and Winchesters. Powers stood his ground and emptied two revolvers before he was killed, although it is believed he was mortally wounded by the first volley from the robbers. When citizens arrived ou the scene a little later Powers was dead in his room and there was no trace of the robbers except a trail of blood that indicated that the sheriff had wounded one or perhaps more of his assailants. The bank officials are unable to give the exact amount of plunder secured, but it is stated that the bank was insured against loss.

As late as 11 yesterday no attempt had been made to capture the robbers, except to wire all adjoining towns to be on the lookout for them. Gov. Davis has offered a reward of $1,000 for the arrest and conviction of each of the robbers. Monday morning.
