FRANK GETTY United Press Staff Correspondent Miami Fla- Feb Whatever may be felt about the merits of bout between Jack Sharkey of Boston and Phil Scott af England from a fistic viewpoint the fact remains that it will have a most Important bearing upon the heavyweight situation muddled since the retirement of Gene Tunney With this fight under hia belt If he defeats the Englishman decisively Sharkey will be in the position of uncrowned champion of the world and needs only to defeat Max Schmeling or have the German default to win recognition as successor Scott should he win which is unlikely but possible will blatantly assert the same for and it must not be forgotten that Philip has a most influential friend at court in his American manager the noisy little James Johnston Hence despite the faet that the affair has been flagrantly overadvertised and will not drew within 8100000 of the (350000 claimed by Medison Square Garden there is enough merit in it to warrant momentary attention from the fight fans Tickets Don't SelL A last minute demand for tickets ranging In price from 85 to (25 for seats in the big ad municipal stadium proved a decided disappointment to the Bill Daring ex-U Navy 319(0 May Attend Jack Sharkey incidentally is rated such a strong favorite over Phil Scott that there la very little betting the odds being 5 to 1 or what do you want A few of the visiting experts profess to believe that if Philip can avoid a quick knockout and last seven rounds he may have a' fhance to outpoint Sharkey but they are not optimistic about the possibility of his even avoiding taking the count almost immediately after the opening bell The setting for the bout under a summery blue sky with a background of palm trees and tumbling blue and white surf is all that could be desired The crowd may number around 30000 if it is a nice night so that Sharkey and Scott will be well rewarded for their efforts' whatever they are Few heavyweight bouts of the relative Importance of tonight's cn- gagement have been amended wiiQl as little popular interest as this one A feeling that Scott is incapable of putting up a battle and that Sharkey is quite capable of Reds and Blues are tied for second place with one victory and one defeat with the Whites In last place with two defeats The business men's class of the Turners now numbers forty men with an -average attendance of 35 Prof Arthur Hermann physical Instructor said today In explaining the purpose of the class Hermann said: "The Belleville Turners in organizing their business men's class are filling a long felt need in this community by keeping men of sedentary occupations fit during the time of the year whea It la most namely the winter season "They are contributing to the health of that Individual and by so doing are elding him to build up his resistance and ward off the ill effects of waste products and toxic poisons that accumulate during this time of year due to inactivity in itself would be well worth the effort and time involved but aild from these benefits it brings the business men of the community together and forms social contacts that otherwise would never be realized is a peculiar bit of psychology that a group of men thrown together on a gym floor lose all feeling of class consciousness They are all on the same level regardless of wealth and position and meet each other as man to man" LAGRANGE IS HOT SPOT OF CAGE TOURNEY By ROBERT OVERAKER United Press Staff Correspondent Chicago Peb 27 (UP) The of the 58 district tournament centers where 770 high tribute to Dempsey as a man of that caliber and included Johnny Risko of Cleveland who fights Vittorio Campolo tonight in the list of class game Very much at his case still showing the effects of his recent serious operation but apparently well on the way to recovery Gene chatted about the serious and humorous aspects of the fight business which he renounced two years ago think you get more laughs Held Up By Ratifications Decatur 111 Feb Release of the 1930 Three Eye League schedule has again been sidetracked because of the failure of two of the clubs to ratify the proposed card of games Action to postpone the release of the chart until various difficulties had been worked out was taken at a meeting of officials here last night The meeting was called at the request of Ross Harriot president of the Terre Haute Club who complained that his club was not given enough home dates during the first month of the schedule An effort to force the Springfield and Peoria clubs to open their schedules on a Sunday was rejected by the former but It is believed officials of the latter club will accept the Sunday opening proposition The tentative chart will be revised as quickly as possible and Adrian 373 Mrs Becker 438 Mrs By FRANK GETTY United Frets Sports Editor Miami Beach Feb that Gene Tunney retired heavyweight champion of the world fought some of his old battles today in an interview with the United Press It was a new Tunney a different Gene from the former calculating rather cold and studied man whom the wrorld knew as the conqueror of Dempsey Thia Tunney was a likeable laughing young man reviewing his prize ring past with a gusto The finito to which the ex-champion referred was the 4th blow a left hook flush to the jaw which Jack Dempsey struck him as he wilted to the ropes in the memorable seventh round of their fight in Chicago back in 1927 Gene told about that round the climax of hia career in the ring with a memory for detail which was amazing considering the virtual contempt with which bo turned hia back upon flstlccuffs in retiring undefeated And he told things never before disclosed answering questions which have been in the minds of every fight fan since the night of the Hit With a Right "He hit me with a right" said Gene pantomining the blow as he sat tense with his memories in an easy chair feinting and ducking as though Dempsey's punches once more were beating him down in the ring at Soldier Field lie came at me and shot home two more a left and a right felt myself going down but the ropes partially held me up and I couldn't go over on my back I saw the tiger look in his eyes as Jack shifted and then he hooked a left right to Tunney indicated a spot on his chin rubbing it gingerly as he relived those vivid moments Fight fans have been debating ever since the night ss to whether Gene could have gotten up after being flatened by Dempsey's terrific punches in the seventh round Never before this interview has Tunney told what passed through his mind as he sat there glassy-eyed at first in the resin with a cry like that of the wolf pack sounding the kill ringing in his ears Wanted to Stay Down "When came Tunney said first tiling thought was how comfortable and pleasant it is to be sitting here The next thing which flashed through my mind was that I had to get The ex-champion explained that white he never had been knocked down before the Chicago fight he frequently had planned what he would do had two plans of action mapped Gene said was to figure that when he came at me he would be careless and possibly lead with his chin while taking a awing at me and that might be able to land first and knock him out "The other was to step in and clinch take a blow in the body and go down for another count of nine giving myself more time to clear my head "Ride His "But as sat tliere on the ring floor in Chicago watching the referee's arm awing up and down I decided to turn down both plans and adopt the one I did the circling around and around knowing that was faster and could keep away from him stopping occasionally to shoot home a punch Answering the question in the mind of fight fans as to whether he benefited by the Gene said he planned to stay down until the count of nine whenever it came A man would be a chump if he didn't take the full time that is coming to ho declared Tun-ney In one of his rare talkative Intensely
