It would be foolish to pick a few of the stars off the Shenandoah team and bring them down here to strengthen the Eagles. Just take the team intact, Bobby Nork and all, and turn them loose on the Bears. Maybe Swede Hanson and Bull Lipski could be fitted into the general scheme of things and make the up-State eleven a little stronger. Hanson and Lipski would be somewhat familiar on this up-State grid machine. On one of the end positions is Len Gudd, who played on the same Temple team with Hanson and Lipski, In the backfield is Alex Kilkuskie, another Temple product.

On the line are the two Rubin boys who learned their football under Heinie Miller at Temple. Another boy in that Shenandoah backfield is Dare Heydrich, of Tamaqua, a product of Bucknell. It would certainly be a treat watch a combination of Hanson, Kilkuskie and Heydrich smashing through the ranks of the Chicago Bears, with the veteran Bobby Nork calling the signals. That would be a back-field that could go places on the pro gridirons. Hanson could toss the passes to his old pal, Len Gudd, better known in Mahanoy City as Leonard Gudaitus, who won nation-wide fame as a basketball star when he played for my old friend Johnny Goepfort.

The big six-footer at end would haul down any stray heaves that the erratic Hanson might toss in his direction, and if the backfield was stopped in line plays, ther would still be a good chance of gaining through the air. There is three weeks remaining before the game with the Bears. Proper financial arrangements could be made in that time, the team could work out at the Phils park and the stage would be set for a successful climax to a pro grid season that got off on the wrong foot. They can stop looking right now and buy a couple of tickets to Shenandoah, where they grow football players that know how to play the game. Let the Eagles hire the entire Shenandoah eleven, transplant them to the Phillies' Ball Park, and sit back and wait for the outcome of the vote on November 7. Then when it comes time to play the Chicago Bears in the first league game scheduled for November, the Eagles will have an outside chance of holding their own with the champions of the pro ranks. Shenandoah has always had a great pro eleven, but it was not until late Sunday evening that the world knew how powerful an aggregation Bobby Nork has moulded up in the heart of the anthracite belt.

When the Shenandoah boys played the powerful Portsmouth Spartans to a 7-7 deadlock they accomplished something that stamps them as a great grid machine. It was the same Portsmouth that crushed the Eagles here last Wednesday night, 25 to 0. The same "million dollar backfield" that ran rough shod over the New York Giants. Glenn Presnell, Father Lumpkin, Ernie Caddell, and the rest of the Spartan ball carriers were stopped dead by a forward line that knows how to play football, and furthermore knows how to fight. Members of the Eastern Conference and the Susquehanna Valley League, the Ironmen will play five games at home and an equal number of contests on the road.

After opening the season against traditional rival Shikellamy, the AAontour County eleven will face Shamokin in its home starter on Friday night, Sept. 17. All of Danville's games will be played under the lights except a Saturday afternoon contest at Northwest in a Susquehanna Valley League encounter.
