and became one of his Thorne i still connected with the SDF and is the hon treasuter of the party In the early days of the SDF Mr Hyndman devoted a good deal of time to the education of men like graduate of Cambridge and Sussex County cricketer died to-day at the age of 79 at his residence in Well Walk at Hampstead He caught a chill when addressing a public meeting at Enfield recently Double pneumonia supervened and his coraditioi last week occasioned much anxiety Over the week-end there had been a decided change for the better and he appeared on the way to complete recovery when early this morning heart trouble supervened with fatal results Mr Hyndman helrl a unique position in British Socialism and to him was due the conversion of the Countess of Warwk-k The funeral which will be of a public character will take place on Saturday at the Holders Green Crematorium Wealthy Son Mr Henry Mayers Hyndman was the eld son of Mr John Becklee Hyndman a barrister- at-law who gave £150000 to Ira i Id and endow churches in the East End He was born in London in 1842 and after being educated privately he proceeded to Trinity College Cambridge of which ne became an MA At the age of 21 he appeared in the Sussex cricket eleven and played in the team from 1863 to 1868 It was in 1866 as a war correspondent-he made his first important entrance into Continental matters and he was soon to contract a deep-seated friendship with such outstanding personalities of tlie sixties as Maz-zini Garibaldi and Safli After some further European experience he made a world tour which embraced Australia New Zealand Polynesia and America which gave him that cosmopolitan outlook on public affairs which W3S so characteristic of his later career BIRTH OF THE SDF It' was in 1881 that he took the first definite step in his chief life-work as a champion of popular rights by founding the Social Democratic ederation Then in the troublous period of Irish agitation during the busy campaign of Parnell and Davitt from 1881 to 1884 he was associated with the agrarian movement as a member of the Irish Land League and Central Executive Land League of Great Britain He founded and duly began as a Socialist to loom largely in the public eye one of his early episodes being a debate with Brad-laugh on Socialism at the old St Hall in Piccadilly Old Bailey Trial His trial and acquittal at the Old Bailey in connection with the West-End riots added to his reputation as a champion of popular causes and in 1895 he unsuccessfully contested Burnley as a Social-Democratic candidate His influence is further widened as chairman of the International Socialist Conference held in London in 1896 and four years Inter he took a prominent part in establishing the new International at the Paris Congreve Foresaw German Menace While an active opponent of the Transvaal War against which he spoke with vigour he was no lees conscious of the gradual growth of the German menace and frequently wrote on the subject between 1905 and 1914 During the war he threw himself wholeheartedly into the national cause and served as ft member of the Food Council in 1918 and 1919 tiesides his more serious literary labours Mr Hyndman also found time to tread the lighter paths of literature his 11 Record of an Adven turous Life and Reminiscences embody-JnK the fruits of a wide observation of men and ftffairs while in 1919 he published his important study of The Man and His TOP-HATTED VENDOR SELLING AFTER HELPING TO SET IT UP Mr Ben Tillett MP said: In my judgment Hyndman stood alone as the greatest English-speaking teacher of Socialism He was further one of the soundest and most combative publicists of his age Hyndman had groat sympathies with the Italians He was Garibaldi an ora the Gari-baldians He also had a wide and comprehensive knowledge of the politics of India and was consulted by the late Lord Salisbury on many a vital issue His knowledge of the Middle East of Russia and of Continental political tendencies gave him a master potation as a judge in great international movements His charm of manner and his profound learning gave this man who in the eighties used to sell
