MONDAY, DECEMBER 3. 1900. SENATORIAL FIGHT. It is an interesting study to watch the course of politics and see how a few men manipulate the great majority to secure the honors and emoluments of public life. During the campaign arguments were for the masses.

Prosperity and full dinner pails were the shibboleths which attracted votes to the republican ticket. The battle was won and the victorious people have had the pleasure of ratifying the result. At Topeka this winter will come on a battle for United States senator. It Is not a contest between opposing principles, because the victor will be a machine republican subservient to th2 administration. It is a pure and simple strife for individual honor.

The Leavenworth Times is ot course a Baker organ. It has opened its batteries upon J. li. Burton with full vigor. A few years ago J.

R. Burton made an; address in Wichita in which ho eulogized Jefferson Davis and made another statement which The Times is reproducing in great glee. Burton is alleged to have said In his speech: "The 13-year-old boy oC today of average intelligence has a better conception of human liberty than the great Lincoln." While the study affords interest what will the people get for their share of the victory in case either Baker or Burton is chosen? 18 IT SARCASM? Speaking of Thanksgiving, J. R. Burton la his address at Abilene remarked: ''Although it is not observed by all, it lis interesting and pleasing to note that there is no protest or objection from eny one in the observance oC the day." Why should there be any protest? There is no law compelling a mani to observe the day, or to conduct his bus Iness or pleasure according to the die tates of some other man's conscience.

But perhaps the would-be senator Was indulging in a bit of keen satire. The chief characteristic of Thanksgiving day Is the fact that families in dulge 1n a full feast eating whatever they please. Possibly the senator is surprised that a people who by constitutional amend inient, attempt to dictate what a man should drink, stands indifferent on tin Question of what he shall eat. As the sentence means nothing on the surface and! as the senator prides himself on the depth of thought manifested in his orations, the conclusion Is unavoidable that he was enjoying an Inward smile when he uttered the ap parent platitude. Just because Sam Kimble of Man hattan, Mr.

Schwinn of Wellington, aim Judge T. B. Wall of Wichita, refuse to ibe candidates for reappointment on th supreme bench the governor should noi become discouraged. By being patient and making a thorough search ho mai lie able to find enough men who will accept the positions and fill out th court. If not he can as a last resoir issue a draft, says the Huitehinosu News.

It was observed at the New York horse show that the woman's high riding hat seems to have said goodby. A simple black derby was the corre thing. Of all the woman riders not one wore a silk hat. Skirt were full and short, just falling below the stirrup. The trailing habit is dead forever. It is reported by the bureau of South American republics that an extensive deposit of rose garnet, situated near Cuautlay, in Mexico, is to be worked on a large scale. It promises to bring In the market a price equal to that of the finest onyx, which it surpasses l.i beauty. This rosalite, as it Is other wif is a white sandstone fille with beautiful little crystals of garnet which are too soft to be useful as gems.

Richard Croker should point to the decision of the American Supreme court declaring an income tax uncon stitutional and then claim the protection of his government. The defeat of Matt Quay Is predicted, but It Is feared the prophets urn the men who saw republican defeat at the national election. Chinese soldiers receive cents a day for fighting. Many an American gets more than that for talking. It Is said Russell B.

Harrison ha.i Shown no aptitude for war. Why doesn't he enter politics? Was that burglar captured in Piinceton dormitory trying to work his way through college?
