ran one harmless play dropped back to punt formation A kick wag indicated Chambers took the pass from center hesitated a second It was enough for sophomore left tackle Jan Carter to come charging through for thi block Chambers took a stey forward fooled Carter badly am cut for the right side of th' field His blockers formed Lv an instant Arkansas pulled to th left could muster but four me: to charge at the ball carried Mai-vin Campbell took care of oni Other blockers picked up more And Chambers ran as he probably never ran before He we through a small hole and gone ac midfield He had left all pursuer behind him at the Arkansas 4 John Tripson came roaring from the rear and blocked Eaki out of the play Chamber crosse I the goal line with Captain Gool-by and Foot McDowell as a screen It was magnificent and the fact that he couldn't kick tfc extra point didn't mean a graft deal Jack Nix who played a swell dt fensive game at halfback set tbs stage for the second State scor After Eakin had passed to th towering John Freiberger to tal i the ball 23 yards to the State 3 Nix stepped into the way of ar-other Eakin pass and scurred 17 yards up the field to the State 4' punt went only to th Arkansas 32 but the Porkers we penalized 15 yards for holding their 24 Corhern Snage Pass Then on third down Eakin trie 1 the most dangerous of i throw into the flat to FYeibergr Corhern dropping back from guard position to protect on th flank came roaring in snatchc I the ball away from the stretcl -ing fingers of Walter Hamber and sped across the line withoi a hand to impede him It is a tually true that State had thn men looking around for Arkanst players to block Johnson kickr 1 this extra point What could Arkansas do about that? Why pass of course And pass they did In two plays Arkansas had thrown another into th hands of Goolsby and before the second quarter ended Tbxie Tulle picked up one Between these ir-terceptions Eakin hit Frcibergc -with heaves and Atwood and Pitts with others but the gair were negligible and State ha something to combat every Arkansas thrust One wee a great kick out bounds by Johnson that stoppe i on tho Arkansas six Eakin returned the compliment with 6 yard quick kick but a penalty fo holding helped State again Then just as the quarter ended Tulloi did his interception and on th last play Chambers passed to Sonny Campbell for a first down o' the Arkansas 36 State was prancing as the Razor backs dragged on the trip to th locker rooms but Arkansas cam out with its best offensive burs to begin the second half State Penalised 15 Yards For Eakin went bustling up th-field 20 yards to the 29 with kickoff and Ray Cole paase' to Eakin for five Then State drew a 15 yard penalty and Arkansas should have been trucking Hamberg lost five and Eakir could make but three to get t-their own 48 Then suddenly a pass clicked fo -real yardage Freiberger went fa on the end end snared Eakin' long heave for a 17 yard gain shovel pass from Eakin to Ham berg meant six more yards to instate 29 and there the busines ended aummarily For Goolsby batted down a pa' and Cole lost five yards and Eakir had to kick His boot rolled ove' the goal line and Arkansas as i' proved was through State took this football gam' right into its own hand forthwith A long punt return by Johnson 15-yard Arkansas penalty and good kick by Johnson put the baT on the three There wa an exchange of punts and another break for State and one against as the last period opened Touchdown Called Back This time a pasa bounced off hands and off Tullos' too and into on the midfield stripe On the first play Nix took the ball on a reverse cut In behind two blockers ducked one man on the sidelines and crossed the very last stripe But away back at the Arkansas 45 Umpire Sammy Sanders was indicating a foul and back came the ball and back went State penalized 15 yards That would have stopped a less determined team But the Maroons came back Johnson placed a ball out of bounds on the Arkansas six and the desperate Eakin tried a pass It clicked into Bill Southerland's hands but Nix coming up fast wrestled the ball away ran it back to the Arkansas 13 Billy Jefferson bulling and twisting banged it up to a first down on the three and on third trial Johnson went over Goolsby for the touchdown SUBSTITUTE'S GOAL wins mm 3-0 John Kelleher Boots Points That Beat Purdue In Thrilling Battle By EARL HILLIGAN Associated Press Sports Writer SOUTH BEND Ind Sept A 21-year-old Irishman named John Charles Kelleher bobbed up from the ranks for one brief glory-filled moment today booting a field goal that gave Notre Dame a hard-won 3 to 0 victory over Purdue before 40000 spectators in the Irish Stadium Kelleher who lives in Lorain Ohio and struggled gamely through the past two seasons as a fifth or sixth string quarterback trotted onto the fidd in the third period to collect the points which I gave the Irish their hardest won opening game in years Sitko Opens Drive Sitko first string Irish signal-caller opened the Notre Dame drive that ended with i game-winning boot Sitko re-j turned a Purdue punt 13 yards to the Boilermaker 34-yard stripe to start a smashing offense which carried to the Purdue 2L Then Doe Thesing Irish fullback spun and fought his way 17 yards to the Purdue four-yard marker forwards then gallantly halted the Notre Dame surge tossing Notre Dame back six yards on two straight plays Thesing smashed to the Purdue eight-yard marker on the next try and then Kelleher entered the game to replace Sitko sending a low straight kick between the uprights as the throng roared Kelleher a senior played a large portion of the remainder of the battle With both schools boasting several star backs the game was expected to develop into wide-open offensive duel Instead it was the linemen who stole most of the show forwards on both elevens re-Deatedly breaking up plays at the line and forcing both teams to punt frequently BV Fail famed Bees" Lou Brock Jack Brown and Mike Byelene had little success against the Irish forwards and on only one ---v- Almost unaided the great Tulane ans but the ball went to Clemson for interference Trexler substituting for Timmons found one of the rare Tulane line holes and picked up 14 yards Then McFadden rifled a 20-yard pass to Blalock who had to lope eight yards for th touchdown Clemson Point Try Fails effort for the point was smothered one of his few failures of the afternoon Clemson opened up another aerial attack in the fourth but Mc-Fadden's campaign was ended when he was smothered by three Greenies Outrushed throughout lemson heM an effective superiority throughout the first half through superior generalship and the accurate quick kicking of McFadden who was constantly sending it over safeties Kellegg and Hays Tulane recorded 19 first downs to Clemson' eight and gained 330 yards to 119 for Clemson ni running and passing
