MISSISSIPPI CORDIAL M' CARTHY ROASTED BY SECOND GUESSERS Target of Criticism On DiMaggio Judgment YAWKEY CAN TAKE IT Looks Ahead for His "Gold Red Sox Commissioner Landis Stages Comeback all." National Pitchers Talk BY PAUL MICKELSON Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, July 8. -Down the sports trail: Roasted Joe Joe McCarthy, carefree from criticism all season his Yankees make the American League race a one-horse as walkover, was roasted today for allowing Rookie Joe DiMaggio to stay in yesterday's all-star game for full nine-inning flop. Many believe Marse Joe should have pulled his star rookie to save his spirit. Some even have A hunch that the Yankees, held to a batting average of .100 by the National Leaguers, may lose a lot of their drive from now on and have a tough time winning their pennant.
McCarthy, A man who became one of baseball's most successful figures by acting almost according to the dictates of his heart, today defended his position and merely chuckled over the thoughts of the second guessers who fear for his Yankees, "I'd do the same thing all over again." said the Yankee pilot. "Joe just had a bad day and, anyway, he was the only right fielder I had on my squad. I used every player I had except Rollie Hemsley. Didn't get chance to use him. DiMaggio discouraged? Don't make me laugh! He just had one of those days.
If he let anything like that worry him, why he just wouldn't belong, that's Yet, pitchers from rival leagues do plenty of talking among themselves when they meet on Pullman trains. Dizzy Dean, Carl Hubbell lazy Lon Warneke made Di Mag look bad with fast, low ones inside. Give and take. Tom Yawkey can give it (ask Connie Mack) but he can take it, too. His Boston Red, flops, most of them ACcused plain laziness, probably try Yawkey's soul but he smiles off the jibes and blissfully talks about 1937.
'38 and '39, I'm not dissatisfied with the team or the management," Yawkey told us. "If I care to spend my money on baseball, that's my business. I'm getting a kick out of it and have no regrets." Yawkey is getting a high rate of interest for his investment, however. His gold-plated boys, despite their woes, are packing 'em in Fenway and other league parks. Comeback.
The greatest baseball comeback of the year is being made by Kenesaw Mountain Landis, high commissioner of organized baseball. The gray-thatched judge, still stern and relentless in his opinions but a trifle more mellow than his early days at the dietator's helm, is riding on his highof popularity among club owners and players.
