body changes countless careers and has moved way beyond the sweet-faced Ken Along the way she has picked up a slew of friends and identities and even managed to generate a little controversy It was 30 years ago today that Barbie made her debut on the toy shelves Introduced by Mattel Toys at the 1959 Toy Fair in New York the llLi-inch doll did not exactly take the market by storm She was produced only for about three months "Not many were made in the beginning because the company think it would be a popular says Bernice Bruner who with her sister Gladys Nuebling operates Wood Valley Doll Shop in Evansville Kim Seeber of Evansville was among that first crop of little girls who got the doll destined for stardom remember it was in says the 33-year-old Ms Seeber of Evansville "because my in March and my mother gave me Barbie for my fourth She still owns the original Barbie with 1959 stamped on its derriere in Roman numerals original Barbie had V-shaped eybrows no color in the eyes and holes in the feet so she could stand on a round Miss Bruner says 1958 copyright date is on the early dolls and when people see that they think they have an original But the first came out in Copyright dates changed with each Barbie face lift had three since she debuted as a haughty unsmiling fashion model She gained a slight smile in 1967 and 10 years later a more confident smile That stemmed in part from the feminist movement according to Mattel spokeswoman Candace Irving It was the first time Barbie's teeth were visible Another change involved making her body flexible James Bolton a former Newburgh Ind resident and now vice president in charge of tool and process engineering for Mattel was involved in that project The native of Scotland who worked at the now-defunct Tri-State Plastic Molding Co of Henderson Ky joined Mattel in 1963 and was assigned to the Barbie project A few years after her introduction she drew the ire of feminists and critics who claimed that little girls who played with the perfectly curvy dolls would grow up hating their own less-than-perfect bodies But it slowed the pace Bolton says sales of Barbie were $450 million last year The company estimates that 90 percent of all girls between the ages of 4 and 10 own at least one Barbie Various marketing techniques were used One involved the hiring of to work at Tri-State toy shops Among those recruited was Lori Goodman Clouser now executive director of the Evansville Arts Education Council When she was a student at the University of Southern Indiana she was hired by Mattel as a Barbie From 1982 to 1986 she and another woman modeled Barbie costumes handed out literature talked to children and signed autographs Mrs Clouser who modeled three Barbie outfits still owns the one she wore in the 1985 Freedom Festival parade Those original Barbie dolls aren't only getting older getting more valuable Mrs Bruner says a blonde Barbie circa 1959 is worth about $900 today in this market The original brunettes are worth about $1000 because Ms Bruner says one out of every three made was a The original Barbie cost $3 Prices quoted by the doll authority are for in mint condition in their original boxes with the cellophane still But not the way most girls kept their Barbies really played with mine still says Mrs Seeber whose collection is displayed in an antique cabinet have an original Ken because my brother cut his teeth on she says But she does own later Kens even one that talks Her collection of Barbies and friends includes originals of Midge Alan Skooter Ricky Francie Casey Chris Buffy Stacey and twins Tutti and Todd All were made before 1966 She prefers the older Barbies but it still trying to get her hands on the 1988 Happy Holiday Barbie "My mother tried to find it for me for Christmas but they were sold Collector Anna Givens of Madisonville Ky suspects Mrs Seeber will pay considerably more today than the doll sold for at Christmastime saw it at Target for $27 and at Sears for Ms Givens says seen it lately at flea markets for Mrs collection of Barbies and friends numbers in the thousands she says They hang from the ceiling of her business Givens Book Exchange Others are carefully stored in her home The collection will eventually be inherited by a great niece in Louisville Ky a baby when Mrs Givens began her collection in the early 1960s Courier photo by SONNY BROWN Indiana The first Barbie from 30 years ago came with a haughty model smile and her own stand Kim Seeber collection includes that first Barbie and her car along with Ken Alan and Midge Lori
