Min Blanche Bates at the Beck theater itonltht In Fighting an American play In three acta by Wll-llam Hiiriburt Scarcely an event of the entire theatrical year equals In Importance and general Interest among the Intelligent clan goens the appearance of Mlu Bates 'In a Belasco production The Interest in Fighting la especially pronounced because It was one of the most notable triumphs of the past dramatic season In New York where It was played to crowded houses for over three hundred performances at Mr theaters It to seldom that a play achieves such a distinction and never has the rare art of Min Blanche Bates been employed to better advantage The masterful stagecraft of David Belasco la always in evidence In the new play Fighting Is In three acts with the scenes laid In the library of a country house on the Hudson river near Ossining The play Is described as one of unusual force and Intensity as well as timely Interne The central character Anna Granger la admirably aultdd to Min Bates' striking personality Anna Granger la the wife of an embessling cashier of a New York trust company who has been convicted and imprisoned She believes him Innocent and with the object of exonerating the father of her children she enters the employ of Burton Temple the president of the trust company and whom many believe to be the real culprit In time she learns that there Is no question of her guilt In the month that she has spent In Temple's house he has fallen In love with her and with the knowledge of her husband's perfidy her feeling of hatred for Temple undergoes a change but not until after she has destroyed the only piece of evidence that will remove suspicion from Temple and establish her guilt It Is near the end of the last act that this Intensely dramatic situation is cleared up in a manner that is as original as it Is startling V- This role requires of Miss Bates that she depict the conflict of three Intense that for her children: that which fades for a wholly unworthy husband and that which grows almost imperceptibly for an employer whom she believes to be guilty of the crime for which her husband is serving a term In jail She learns in time that her husband is guilty Miss Bates has not alone achieved all this but has found In the role of Anna Granger the best opportunities she has ever had for her rare talent and her greatest triumph The remarkable success of Fighting Hope" is due to the timeliness and simplicity of the story developed in three acts of the play and the brilliant acting of Miss Bates The company provided by David Belasco for Miss Bates 1 of exceptional merit The production is made upon the customary artistic Belasco scale Fighting staged with the usual Belasco thoroughness and artistry The company provided by Mr Belasco for Miss Bates' support while small In number is exceptionally capable 1 Kmma Bunting Friday While many plays have had longer runs probably there Is none that have pleased more people than Southern one of the greatest successes of recent years Every one unjoys the drama of the sunny South the life the scenery and the manners are restful as well as pleasing While entirely different In theme and action dramatised from Mrs Mary Holmes' popular novel of Southern life lias almost the same local setting as Southern The same chivalry and beauty the same reflnement'and repose characterise the play However there is no similarity beyond this of Mrs Holmes' novel was being read to our grandmothers almost before Mrs Parker who wrote Southern was born The dramatists of Rivers' adhered closely to the book and none nf the features which have made the 1 play so popular with over ten million 1 people have been omitted In the play Even the scenery and properties were made with the book for directions The cast 'was selected for their pe cullar fitness for the several parts so taken in all it is almost a resurrected that will appear in the play Miss Emma Bunting Is playing the beautiful Lena and no happier selection could have been made for this difficult role Min Bunting fits her rolo so perfectly that frequently when the company arrives in towns ladles who may be watching the acton say Lena I would know her When Emma Bunting comes rolling on the stage a little barefooted girl there is invariably a hearty round of applause no perfect is her deUnatlon of the child Lena A great many actresses can play child parts and great numbers have made success in the roles of Misses but when one woman plays each succeeding act In such a manner that her audience can see tho years pass-over her critics begin to sit up and look Miss Bunting's versatility to gaining her many favorable criticisms in the 1 larger cities Strictly popular prices will prevail Miss nates' Portable Drawing Room Blanche Bates is not a faddist Her freedom from fads Is a notable trait of the many that constitute an exceptionally ainlabla and engaging disposition A most material testlmon-- ial to completion bf the Metropolitan Insurance tower and Bailey and Austin as full-fledged and accepted stars In Top Is coming That merry monarch who has delighted lovers of comedy opera In a manner superior to the great majority of stage kings will be one of the early attractions at the Beck theater under the management of John Cort No more pleasing announcement could bo made In a theatrical sense than that the big Chicago musical comedy success "Honeymoon will visit here soon It will come direct from its long run of two hundred nights at the LaSalle theater with the same production clever comedies pretty girls and the wonderful dancing 'It is sure to be greeted by a big house The season of 1909-10 has opened brilliantly for Charles Hanford The public has left no doubt of Its readiness to welcome him In a modern play provided that It presents a character sufficiently strong in human Interest to call for Ills best abilities American as interpreted by him is a study In human nature and no a merely farcied creation and the comedy Is the more effective because it is a spontaneous outgrowth of the plot A new stcry Is told on Joseph Jefferson that will bear repeating He was calling down a speaking tube to the janitor of an apartment In New York and Jefferson unable to get information he desired finally blurted out Is there a blithering Idiot at the end of this The reply It has been some time since the author of Lion and the haa contributed a new play and the announcement that Third will be seen here shortly should create considerable box office activity Miss Emma Bunting who comes to the Beck theater coon as Is considered one of the most versatile little leading women on the American stage not only In her line of acting but in the art of In Rivers" she first appears ns a little barefooted girl and her audience can believe nothing but thet she Is a mere child The second ect sees a Miss and her change Is as natural as If the years had actually made it and gs the play proceeds she actually seems to live the years supposed to elapse The Omaha Neb Bee rays: Bunting seems to mature with the years In the first act she Is a vivacious child then a maid and then a Miss and during all these years she never loses a charm that seems to be Those large cans of TALCUM POWDER we are1 selling for TWENTY-FIVE CENTS are sure -a winner They are a large package and good powder Try it The portable dressing room is the direct outcome of the star's passion for fresh air Fresh air to Miss way of thinking Is represented by a temperature calculated to chill any one 'but an Eskimo But she 'realises that others might suffer in a breese which only makes her blood tingle hence the movable dressing room which makes It possible for Miss Bates to revel In an atmosphere of say 50 degrees while the members of her -company In rooms adjoining the same stage are changing in an atmosphere the temperature of which is as much greater as they care to have it The dressing room can be placed at Almost any point on the stage in tho rear of the back drop and while Min Bates is taking the attention of the audience it can be thrown open on three sides If necessary or so shifted as to command the -entrance of cool air from the stage door or a transom Constructed of -heavy canvas which Is carefully lined with a closely-Woven material when open and erect It serves to keep out warm air Justas it would cold air and there to no need for Its occupant to remain within any longer than she desires Built upon framework working upon hinges the dressing room can be conveniently folded and easily transported! i The play Is a dramatisation of the novel by that name written In 1859 by Mrs Mary Holmes This famous writer to still alive and doing active literary work though mostly In the line of short stories for the popular magazines One of the large commentaries In speaking of Mrs Mary Holmes says: Holmes Is probably the greatest moral writer we And this very fact of her moral writing Is largely accountable for her large following She has never sought to Increase the sale- of her books by writing 'vulgar things and calling them books nor has she catered to the sensational-loving class though her books never lack -plot nor Interest Over ten million copies of her books have been -cold ijenu Sm EMMA BUNTING IN Rivers leading the list In point of popularity
