In the fourth consideration these officers claim that the additional pay is used as an attraction for young men entering the service, to the- mounted branches in preference to the dismounted. In the eighth paragraph of the petition it is recommended that the pay bill provide that the pay of all officers of the line of the same rank and length of service, on the active list, be uniform and the same, and similarly on the retired list. In conclusion of the request which is ndorsed favorably by Colonel M. P. Maus, Twentieth infantry, it says that the importance of infantry has Increased in every way with the improvement in small arms.

A higher degree of training is required, greater technical skill and ability for the direction, of fire and determination of distances. The infantry officers standing and requirements are as hlgli as that of any arm and of much more comparative value and Importance than ever before. On the training and efficiency of infantry depends success in battle, and any discrim-iation against this important branch of the service is a source of discontent and loss of esprit de corps, and will militate greatly to prevent that high state of efficiency which it must attain to be successful in future warfare. As told, the beautiful Mrs.

Swan sued Henry Tilden Swan for divorce and charged that a woman, whom she named specifically, had caused Swan to forget his marriage vows "on or about July 13, 1907."
