THEBE are twenty-four members in the council and forty-eight in the house, or a total of seventy -two members.

The oldest member the council is Dr. V. P. Kennedy, of Brown county, aged 60, and the youngest, C. D.

Austin, of Hansom, aged 28. The average age of the members of both houses is 39 years. The oldest me uber of the house is J. M. Bayard, of Turner county, aged 33, and the youngest ones, P.

J. McCumber, of Richla and H. 8. Olrver, of Ransom county, aged 26. The average shows a remarkably young lot of law-makers.

There are 16 the legislature who came to Dakota from Iowa; 13 from Minnesota; 11 from Wisconsin; 11 from Illinois; 2 from Ohio; 2 from New York; 2 from Nebivska; 2 from Maine; 2 fiom Vermont; and 1 from eaca of the states of insafe, Pennaj ama, District of Columbia, California and Indiana. Bowdle is a uatne of Ohio, and 35 of age. He is a farmer and came from Iowa to Dakota in 1882. He has never had cause to regret this move, as his farming opei ations have been entirely satisfactory Present postoffice address, Mitchell. WILLIAM B. CAMERON.

William Cameron is a native of the province of Quebec, and came to Dakota from Iowa in 1879. He is 29 years of age and engaged in the mercantile trade Madison. Present postoffice address, Madison. J. P.

DAY. J. P- Da was born in the Keystone f.tate and is 52 ears of age. He came to Dakota in IfWl t'rom Illinois and engaged in tanning in Spink county. Present address, Millotte.

WILLIAM DUNCAN. William Duncan is a native of Scotland, and (Mine to Dakota from Minnesota in 1872. He is 42 jears of age and is engaged in selling well material and wind engines. He was a member of the council, twelfth session, and has been county commissioner hi Union county. In the war he was captain of Company Tenth Illinois cavalry, and chief of scouts on htaff of the general commanding the Army of the Tennessee, and is the celebrated officer who floated down the Ogeeche river in an open skiff past the guns of Fort McAlister and the batteries defending Savannah to open communication with the commissary fleet for General Sherman's army; and it was he who was the beares of that famous message from Gs-nenl Sherm in to President Lincoln in IKO-t, "I tender jou Savannah as a Chrihtm ih gift." fOHN FLITTIE. Jolin Flitha was born in Norway and is 2S eai of age. He is engaged in the rvl estate business at Mayville, to winch he came in 1880 from Minnesota. lie resigned the mayoralty of Majville last ear to come to the council. Geo. R. Farmer born in Ashtabula countj Ohi-), i-, 29 ears of age. He came from Minnesota to Dakota in 1881 cng iged in the practice of law. He a member of the constitutional convention at Sioux: Falls in 1883, and is a son of the Hon.

John Gamble is a native of New York state, and came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1873. He is one of the leading lawyers of Dakota, and 36 years of age. He was district attorney of Yankton county in 1875, acting United States attorney under appointment by the attorney general in 1877, member of the territorial central republican committee three or four times, member of the house in 1879 and the council of 1881. He is a graduate, with first honors, of the '72 class, Lawrence University, Wisconsin, and was elected to the present council in defiance of the opposition of the Press and Dakotaian and its followers. A. C. HUETSON. A. C.

Huetson is a civil engineer, and was born in London, Eng. He came to Dakota from Illinois in 1876, and is 4 years of age. He was for ten years count; surveyor of Livingston county, Illinois and four years county treasurer of Lin coin county, Dakota. Present postoffice address, Lincoln. A.

SHERIDAN JONES. A. Sheridan Jones, lawyer and editor was born at Concord, Missouri, and is 4: years of age. He came to Dakota from Ohio in 1872. He was territorial auditoi from 1874 to 1876 (elective); district attor ney one term; and now elected for second term; enrolling and engrossin clerk of the last house; county commis sioner for five years, and superintenden of schools one teini.

He served three years in the war in the Thirc Wisconsin infantry, and was wounded four times. He was edncatec at Hiram college tinder Prefei- dent Garfield. and for several years prior coming to Dakota was in charge of the department of penmaoship in Bryant Stratton business college, Cleveland, Ohio. V. P. KENNEDY. Dr. V.

P. Kennedy was born in Butler county, and came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1880. He is a practicing physician at Ordway, and also engaged in farming. He was a member of the Minnesnta house from Meeker county from 1860 to 1862 inclusive, and surgeon of the Fifth Minnesota during the war. Since the war he has been examining surgeon for the department.

He is 60 year; of age. Present postoffice address, Ord- waj. JTTDsON LA MOUBE. Judson La Moure 1 is a native of Quebec, and came to Dak'otn from Iowa in 1860. He is 46 years of age, and a merchant at Neche.

He was a member of the legislature (council) in 1873; house in 1877, and council in 1881. He has been deputy United States marshal under all United States maishals from Pinney down. He was sergeant at arms in the last house. He says that in all the seventeen years he has been deputy marshal he has never made any money out of it. Present postoffice address, Pembina.

P. 3. MCLAUGHLIN. P. J.

McLaughlin was born in Londonderry, Ireland, and came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1882. He is 35 years of age, an attorney by profession, with a lucrative practice. Present postoffice address, Grafton. H. H.

NATWICK. H. H. Natwick is an attorney who cast his fortunes in Dakota in 1879. He came from the state of Minnesota, was born in Wisconsin, and is 30 years of age.

F. Pettigrew was born in Vermont in 1848, and is therefore 36 years old. He came to Sioux Falls in the early days of that citj 's history and has been among the most prominent of Dakota statesmen, lawj ers and business men. In ,1880 he was elected delegate to congress. JOHNSON NTCKEUS. Johnson Nickeus was born in the District of Columbia and came to Dakota in 1880. He is 34 years of age and enjoys a large law practice at Jamestown, and is interested largely in Dakota dirt. He was a member of the last council. Present postoffice address, Jamestown.

CHARLES BIOHABDSON. Charles Richardson was born in England and is 41 years of rge. He came to Dakota from AVisconsin in 1881, and has run one of the brightest newspapers, the Valley City Tunes, in the territory. He was first U. S.

ganger in'76 at Milwaukee; served in company seventy-sixth New York infantry, from 1862 to 1865, and was eighteen months in Libby prison, Belle Isle, Andersonville and other southern prisons. He was paroled in 1865 and discharged from service in July, 1865, He is now colonel on the governor's staff. Present postoffice address, Valley City. A. B.

SMEDLEY. Col. A. B. Sniedley was born in New York and is 59 years old.

He came to Dakota from Iowa in 1879. He is a farmer and has always been identified with the granger element. He was master of the state grange of Iowa three years and lecturer for the national grange two years. He commanded an Iowa regiment during the war. Present postoffice address, Milbank.

TWOMEY. D. H. Twomay born in New York state and came to the Eed River valley from Iowa in 1879. He formed a law partnership with O.

W. Francis on the 17th of November, 1879, and has had a large and lucrative law practice. He has been on one side or the other of nearly every important case arising in the Fargo district. He is energetic, and, although a man of fixed ideas, considers the interest of his locality of paramount importance. He is 45 years of age.

Present postoffice address, Fargo. GEOKGE H. WALSH. George H. Walsh is a native of Montreal, Province of Quabec, and came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1874.

He is 39 years of age, a lawyer and ex-journalist, but spends the most of his time farming. He was a member of the council in the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth legislative assemblies and president of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth sessions. He was in the volunteer service from 1862 to 1865. Present postoffice address, Grand Forks. FRANK J.

WASHABAUGH. Frank J. Washabaugh was born in Pennsylvania, is a lawyer and 35 years o1 age. He came to Dakota in 1874 and located at Deadwood. He was a member of the council in the Fifteenth legislative session and was clerk of the UniteC States district court from 1878 to 1883.

He is the only man ever sent back to the legislature from the Black Hflla, which speaks well for his ability and popularity. 'Present postoffice address, Deadwood. B. K. WAGNER.

B. R.Wagner is a fanner and was born in Washington county, Maryland. He is 50 years old and weighs 310 pounds. He came to Dakota from Illinois in 1875. He was at one time sheriff of Ogle county, Illinois.

He was first and second lieu- teriant in the Illinois volunteers, commissioned lieutenant and brevet and provost marshal of prisoners of war by President Lincoln. Served hi the army from August 1861 to 1866. He was member of the last legislature. Present postoffice address, Springfield. s.

P. WELLS. S. P. Wells was born in Michigan and came to Dakota from Kansas in 1876, and is 40 years of age.

He has been superintendent of public instruction of Pennington county since its organization and is engaged in farming and the lumber business. Present postoffice address. Rapid City. J. H.

WESTOVER. J. H. Westover was born in New Yoik and is 38 years of age. He came to Dakota in 1883 from Chicago and located at East Pierre, where his ability as a lawyer and general activity soon placed him foremost among its citizens.

V. Barnes, member from the fifth district, came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1879. He is a lawyer by profession and 33 years old. He was born in East Albany, Y. He has been U.

S. Commissioner in the second judicial district and judge of probate three terms in Kingsbury county. Present postoffice address. De Smet. JOHN T.

BLAKEMORE. John T. Blakemore, member from the sixth district, is 36 years old; came to Dakota from Indiana in 1883. He is a journalist and was born in Cherokee, Alabama, and is a graduate of East Tennessee University, ciass of 1874. During the war Mr.

Blakemore's father was living at Cherokee, Alabama, and Major Edwards, now of the Fargo Argus, but at that time commanding a regiment of ioldiers, stopped at his house for dinner. Present postoffice address, Highmore. JOHN M. BAYARD. John M.

Bayard was born in Becket- and came to Dakota in 1878 from Minnesota. He is 58 years old and has aeen a successful farmer all his life. He aas been one of the county commissioners of McCook county in the fourth district for the past two years. In 1830 Mr. Bajard's parents moved to Fulton, N.

then quite a new region. In 1857 they moved to Minnesota, and from there to Dakota, having pioneer experiences in all three regions. Present postoffice addres, H. M. CLARK.

I H. M. Clark was born in New Hampshire, and is 52 years old. Prior to coming to Dakota in 1881, he was engaged in mercantile and manufacturing business in Toledo, Ohio, from which state he came Dakota. He is now engaged in farm- nig.

Present postoffice address, Plankin- DR." HENRY W. COE. Dr. Henry W. Coe is 27 years old and was born in Waupon, Wisconsin.

Later lis parents moved to Minnesota, from which the doctor came in 1879. He has lad a very successful practice at Mandan, and as a result of mingling in poli- ics, is now a member of the legislature. He has been a member of the Morton county board of education for several rears, and is a prominent member of the Mason and Odd Fellow societies, and a member of the American Medical Association. E. B. DAWSON. E. B.

Dawson, member from the First district, is 45 years of age, a farmer, and came to Dakota from Iowa in 1869. He was county assessor for eight years and sheriff for two years. He was enrolling in the council of 1875. and chief clerk of the council in 1881. Postoffice iddress, Lodi.

FRANK ELDRIDGE. Frank A. Eldridge, member from the Seventh district, was born in Buffalo, N. from which state he came in 1879. 5e is a lawyer, and in addition to his ractice carries nn a general merchandise business.

He is 28 years old. Mr. Sldridge was the unanimous choice of he Grant county convention and nominated at the Seventh district convention at Aberdeen, comprising the ten counties from Minnesota to the Missouri river, and received the entire vote of the district for member of the house. E. HUSTON. C. E. Huston, member from the Third district, was born in Syracuse, N.

and a 44 years old. He is a farmer, and to Dakota in 1879 from Illinois, le was one of the first legal commissioners of Douglas county, and has held several minor public offices. Present address, Huston. OIiE A. HELVIG.

Ole A. Helvig is a native of Norwayj and prior so 1871 lived in Iowa. He has been justice of the peace and is now chairman of the board of town supervisors. He was also a member of the house in ,1879. Present postoffice address, Canton.

i H. M. GREGG. H. M.

Gregg was born in Wisconsin and is now 44 years old. He came to Dakota in 1878 from California and settled hi the Black Hills, where from a commissioner he has, in the past six years, worked himself up to a superintendent's position. Present postoffice address, Spearfish. JOHN HOBART. John Hobart is a native of New Hampshire and came to Dakota in 1879 from Minnesota.

He is engaged in the hardware business at Egan, and has held several miner public offices. He was a member of the Minnesota legislature in 1866 and served his constituents so well that he was returned to that body again in 1868. Present postoffice address, Egan. EUGENE HUNTINGTON. Eugene Huntington, member from the seventh district, was born in Connecticut, is an attorney by profession and 39 years of age.

He left a large practice in Iowa in 1878 and came to Dakota, which move he has never had reason to regret. His present postoffice address is Webster. DR. E. T.

HUTCHINSON. Dr. E. T. Hutchinson was born in Kentucky and is 38 years of age.

He came to Dakota in 1882 from Illinois. Opened a large farm in the Red River valley. He is also a physician and enjoys an extensive practice. Present postoffice address is Lacota. HUGH P.

LANGAN. Hugh P. Langan is a native of Ireland, and came to Dakota from Iowa in 1883. He is a fanner and real estate broker, and 31 years of age. Present postoffice address, Centerville.

JOHN LARSON. John Larson was born in the kingdom of Norway and is 41 years of age. He lived in Wisconsin up to 1867, when he came to Dakota and broke up a good sized farm in Union county. He has held the position of postmaster of Spink foir- the last 13 years. GEORGE H.

JOHNSON. George H. Johnson is a native of Norway. 41 years of age. Came to Dakota two years ago from Minnesota and is now engaged in general merchandise at Groton, Dakota.

He was sheriff of Hennepin county, from Jan. 1, 1871, to Jan. 1, 1877, and represented Hennepin county in the legislature of 1877. He served in Battery 1st Illinois artillery, during the war, and took part in all the campaigns of the army of the Cumberland. His present postoffice address is Gsoton.

ALEXANDER SIC CALL. Alexander McCall was born in St. Lawrence county, N. and is now 53 years of age. He came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1875, and settled in Richland county, where he held the position of eounl commissioner.

At the tune of the Black Hills excitement in 1877, he coming to Bismarck and engaged in transportation to that region. In 1879 he settled on a ranch near Sturgjs City wherg he is now engaged in farming. Present postoffice address is Sturgis City. PATRICK MCHUGH. Patrick McHugh cama to Dakota from Nebraska in 1875.

Engaged in farming in the Red River valley. Is 38 years of age and register of deeds for Cavilier county. He first located at Deadwood and was delegate to the Grand Forks convention two years ago. -Postoffice address, Langdon. HANS MYRON.

Hans Myron, from the First district, is a native of Norway, 35 years of age, and came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1859 and settled in Clay county. He was a member of the house in 1877 and is now postmaster at Lincoln. Present post- office address, Lincoln. p. J.

M'CUMBER. P. J. McCumber came to Dakota in 1881 from Rochester, Minnesota. He was born in Illinois and is 26 years old.

5e received a good education in law and is now practicing his profession in Wahpeton, Richland county. Present address, Wahpeton. E. W. MARTIN.

E. W. Martin is a college graduate, and same from Iowa, where he was born, to Dakota in 1880, locating at Deadwood, in the Black Hills. He is only 29 years of age, but his thorough knowledge of aw soon placed him in the foremost rank of the legal profession, and being an excellent parliamentarian his friends have irged him foi the speakership. M. L. MILLER. M. L.

Miller, was born 'at Gettysburg, in March, 1845, and is therefore about 40 years old. He is a farmer and lumber dealer at his present home, Altoona, to which point he moved from Illinois in 1883. Present postoffice address, Altoona. C. W.

MORGAN. C. W. Morgan is a native of the state honored by the residence of Hon. James G.

Blame, and is 38 years old. He came to Dakota in 1871 and has held the position of sheriff very acceptably to the people of Traill county. He is also engaged in mercantile pursuits. Present post- office address Caledonia. HARRY S.

OLIVER. Harry S. Oliver was born in Mayville, N. and is 26 years of age. He is a farmer and merchant and came to Dakota in 1880.

som county in 1883 and is one of the aldermen of Lisbon at the present time. Mr. Oliver has also been singularly successful in his farming operations this year. He sold 9,600 bushels of wheat from the machine as soon as threshed for 68 cents a bushel, the largest price paid this season. He calculates he cleared 28 cents a bushel.

Present post office address, Lisbon. ARTHUR J. PAHSHALL. Arthur J. Parshall was born in Columbia City, Indiana, and moved from Illinois to Dakota in April, 1873, and is 37 years of age.

He has held the position of register of deeds hi Hanson county three terms. He is a journalist, but enough of a farmer to be elected to the legislature from the Second district. Present postoffice address, Alexandria. GEO. W.

PIERCE. Geo. W. Pierce was born in Ohio and moved from Iowa to Dakota in 1878, where he engaged in mercantile business and opened'a farm near Casselwood. Is 48 years of age.

In 1883 he was ap- painted trustee of the North Dakota Hospital for the Insane, at Jamestown, which position he now holds. Present post- office address, Casselwood. MAJOR JOHN A- PICKLER. Major John A. Pickler is a native of the Hoosier state; is a lawyer and 40 years of age.

He came from Iowa to Dakota in 1882. He has been prosecuting attorney, member of the Iowa legislature and one of the Garfield electors. He served three and a half years in the army, is a graduate of the literary department of the Iowa State University and of the law department, Ann Arbor, Michigan. PUGH. Thomas M. Pugh is a native of Wales, 53 years of age, and came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1874, He was United States marshal during the rebellion, and receiver of public monies and United States disbursing agent from Sept. 1st, 1874, to March 3d, 1883, at Fargo. In 1860 he was one of the Pike's Peak pios- pcctors and on his return spent Puoutone -year in Denver, then a small mining erstown.

He was formerly in business in He.was assessor of Ran- Valley City, where his popularity caused 1OOO I 1 nun to run ahead af his ticket in the last election. Present postoffice address, Cooperstown. JOHN C. SOUTHWICK. John C-Southwick, member from the Fifth district, was born in New York, state, is 55 years of now engaged in fanning.

Came to Dakota from Illinois in 1880. He was one of the early pioneers of the Sucker state, coming to Chicago in 1850. He was in the mercantile and manufacturing business in Illinois for thirty years, and has been a member of the Chicago board of trade. Present postoffice address, Denver. WILBUR F.

STEELE. Wilbur F. Steele was born in Jefferson county, New York, is 40 years of age, and moved to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1877. He opened the first large farm west of Jamestown on the line of the Northern Pacific and in 1882 laid out a townsite adjoining his farm, which is now a thriving city, with water works, sewerage and gas to be put in in the spring. Has been county commissioner ot Kidder county, ever since its organization, treasurer of the county, and treasurer and mayor of the city of Steele.

He is a colonel on the governor's staff. Present postoffice address, Steele. DONALD STEWART. Donald Stewart is a tanner. 53 years of age.

STEBBIXS. S. E. Stebbins, member from the 10th district, is a native of Vermont, the maple sugar state. He is a fai mei.

54 of age. and came to Dakota irom Minnesota in 1879. He -nat, for Borneo-ears land examiner for the lailroad. and is one of the earliest settlers in Richland countj. Present post- office address, Mooreton.

HENRY W. MITII. Henry W. Smith was bom in Germany and came to Dakota from Illinois in He is 41 years of age, and has held several minor offices. Was a member of company 77th Illinois volunteers, under Col.

D. P. Grier. Served three years, was taken prisoner on General Banks' Red River expedition and kept fourteen months in a rebel prison at Camp Ford, Texas. He was recently elected J.

V. commander of Joe Hooker post G. A. at Sioux Falls. His present postoffice address is Sioux Falls.

A. L. VAN OSDEL. A. L.

Van Osdell was born Indiana and is 39 vears of age. He is a farmer and came to Dakota from Minnesota in 1864 He was with Siblej 's expedition through Dakota, camped two daj's six miles below Bismarck 011 the banks of Apple Creek. The railroa and Bismarck were then unheard of. Present postoffice address, Yankton. J.

P. WARD. J. P. Ward was born in Ohio and came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1879- He is 50 years of age and has been successful in his fanning operations in Turner county.

Present postoffice address Marion. MARK WARD. Mark Ward, member from the Third district, was born in Vermont and came to Dakota in 1879. He is 40 years of age and is now superintendent of schools in Brule county. He has an extensive law practice at Kimball.

T. DeWoodj, member from the Seventh district, was born in Manchester, Iowa, and moved to Dakota in 1881. Is 27 years of age. He now carries on a mercantile business at Ipswich. He was alderman of Howard, Iowa, in 1883, and county clerk of Jones county.

E. A. Williams is a native of Mystic. Conn. He came to Wisconsin in" 1861 and remained until 1865.

he located at Freeport, Illinois, and remained there until he came to Dakota and located at Yankton on May 8th, 1871, residing there until June, 1872, when he carno to Bismarck. He was a member of the territorial house of representatives in 1872-3 and a member af the territorial council in 1874-5, and again a member of the house of representatives of 188J2-3, being speaker thereof during that time. Since coming to the territory he has been engaged in the practice of law. His age is 33. Present postoffice address, Bismarck.

Pittsburg iron and steel mills are resuming operations, and although wage rates are low, there is reason to believe that Tthe tide in this great industry has turned. Iron and steel are always tue first to feel the effects of repression and always the last to recover. outfitting point. He came to Minnesota and settled at Mankato in 1854. He is now a banker at Ellendale.

Present postoffice address, EUendale. GEORGE RICE. George Rice was bom in Iowa and is 30 years of age. Is a lawyer by profession and came to Dakota in Junej 1878. He has been president of the village of Flandreau and treasurer of Moody county.

He was a member of the last house and is one of the six of the last legislature returned to the present body. Present postoffice address, Flandreau. DR. H. H.

RUGER. Dr. H. H. Ruger was born in New York state and came to Dakota from South Carolina in 1873, Opened a farm which he is now running, in addition to his duties as practicing phj'sician.

He was with the 7th cavalry at one time stationed at Fort Abercrornbia, and was in Stanley's expedition of 1873 and came through Bismarck at that time. He is 35 years of age. His present postoffice address is Grand Harbor P. L. RUNKEL.

P. L. Runkel was born at Milwaukee. is 27 years of age, and came to Dakota in September, 1878. He has been city treasurer of Salem, and is engaged in mercantile business at that point.

H. Riddell, member from the fourth district, was born in Illinois, moved to Iowa, from which state he came to Dakota in 1878. He opened farm and is now engaged in grain, fuel and feed business. Is 36 years of age. Present postoffice address, Valley Springs.

Roach was born in Virginia, came to Dakota in 1879. Is 44 years of age and is one of the successful farmers in the new county of Steele. Present postoffice address, Larimore. H. STONG.

H. Stong moved to Dakota from hi birthplace, Ontario, in 1881. Is 31 years of age and runs a farm in Pembina county. Present postoffice address, St. Thomas.

Sprague, member from the eighth district, was born in the Buckeye state, and came to Dakota from Nebraska, January, 1878. Is 57 years of age. He has been a member of the legislatures of Ohio, Iowa and of the constitutional convention of Nebraska. He is an attorney, and his brother was once superintendent of a western division of the Northern Pacific railroad. Present postoffice address, Custer City.

Swanton was born in Rochester, N. is a farmer and grain dealer, and 43 years of age. He came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1879. He has been justice of the peace in Hudson county and'held several minor offices. Present postoffice address, Meno.

J. w. SCOTT. J. W.

Scott is a native of Ontario. Is a farmer and 35 years of age. He came to Dakota from Wisconsin in 1879 and was one of the commissioners of Grand Forks county three years. His present postoffice address is Grand Forks. JULIUS STEVENS.

Julius Stevens was born in Norway, is 29 years of age. He came to Dakota from Minnestoa in 1879. Is a banker and also runs a hardware store at Coop- Two gentlemen met on State street this morning. Said one to the other- "How is business?" "Poor," was the reply "I met with a little accident. Night before last burglars broke into my store, but left without taking anything.
