I have not leen able to discover It. This may be due to my lack of understanding or to their incapacity to express themselves clearly, for their style Is something appalling.

But perhaps this scandalous failure In expression, when expression is what they yearn for and demand at all costs, may be a symptom of something of a radical mistake theyjbave made in the direction their efforts and aspirations. They think they need more freedom, more room, a chance to be more spontaneous- I suspect that they have had too much freedom, too much empty space, too much practice in being spontaneous when there was nothing in them to bubble out. Their style Is a sign of this it is not merely that thy have no mastery of the English language as hitherto spoken, no clear sense pf the value of words and no simplicity; that they are without the vocabulary, or the idiom of cultivated people. They ambish to be a great opera star, or President of the United States, or City Coun- cilman, or maybe the town banker, But these folks, as Arnold Wiard points out, are' so busy keeping track of their old ambitions and thinking up new ones, they don't get a chance to put an awful lot of kick behind any of 'em. These professional am- bitioners make splendid mop custod ians. Olin Eckley thought up this one. He says that with some folks ambi tion is a matter of degrees. Frrinst- ance, they'll start out with an 'ambi tion to own a Ford.

Then ambition sprouts to a left-handed dust protec tor" for the horn windshield, or may be a patent oil fattener for car bureter. And when they get through, their ambition locks like a Texa3 horned toad and amounts to about as much. Nobody gets more fun out of am bition than the small boy.
