THE MaLIuBsTE DEFEAT IN MEMICO. Many of our readers know something of the past life of Henry A. Crabb, of Mississippi. Some nine years ago, in a street fight of a most sanguinary nature, he killed Jenkins, of the Vicksburg Whig He afterwards moved to California, was an energetic sort of iuan in all his undertakings, and was invited to make an invasion into Nicaragua before Walker. This, however, Crabb declined but recently at the suggestion of a number of friends, entered the northwest portion of Mexico, Sonora, at the head of a small band, where, according to reports lately received, his career, with that of most of his followers has been cut short.

From accounts it appears that on the 1st of April a detachment of the National Guard commanded by Capt. Lorenzo Rodriguez, met, in the village of Carborea, Crabb's filibusters, who had entered Sonora by way of Sonoyta, of which village they had taken possession. They were vigorously attacked, Capt. Rodriguez being mortally wounded at the onset and two of the men of the National Guar'd falling at the same time. Crabb had his thigh broken, and eight of his men were killed.

It was then ascertained that another detachment of about thirty filibusters were advancing by way of Tubutana. On the 2d the first named were besieged in two houses' ir front of the church, surrounded by two hun dred and fifty to three hundred men; but the Sonoriaus were still without leaders. Later, Lieut. Colonel Jose Maria Jiron and Capt. Hilario Gabilondo arrived with more forces and artillery.

On the 3d Mr. Samuel Elias Pro, who had marched against the filibusters, coming by way of Tubutama, also returned to Caborca. The Sonorians were thus strongly reinforced, and pushed their operations against the filibusters. At night on 6th one of the two houses above referred to was fired, and at the same time Mr. Ellis entered into the corral court or yard of the house.

The fire spread so rapidly that the two houses were soon in flames. Two barrels of powder belonging to the filibusters exploded; a considerable number of them were wounded, and at 11 o'clock at night the rest surrendered at discretion. Fifty-nine were taken prisoners, among them Crabb; and twenty four rifles and some munitions were taken. The Vov de Sonora announces from Ures, on the 9th, that all the prisoners had already been shot. Those who were advancing by Tabutama were but twenty five in number.

had entered the State by way Tueson. Of this band, 14 had made'their escape; but sixty of the Guards were in pursuit of them. The reports estimate the total number of the filibusters at one hundred and fiftv. Deducting the fifty-nine prisoi-' ers and the fourteen fugitives, it is thus made to appear that not fewer than eighty of them had been Georgian. NASHvILLE JoCKEY 'CLrn RACES-SPRING Spring Meeting opened yesterday.

The attendance was not large, and the sport indifferent. The contest was a math race for $5,000, two year olds, mile heats. The following is the summary. The Albion colt won the race with great-ease. Thomas G.

If every family wvould resolv-e to diminish the conumption of sugar onie-hanlf, or onie third. the evil would soon disappear: and this sacrifice would really amount to but little. The presenlt exorhitantly high price at which the article is selling must, as a niatural consequence, check its consumption, for the simple reasoni that the poorer classes, and even those of moderate means, cannot afford to buy it. The Providence editor thinks that the present high pies will have the effect of stimaulating all the domestio sources of supply, aiid that the present year will produce great quantities fromi the maple, ad also from the Chinese cane recently introduced. -Bai.

No SrA RaAIrON IN of the Knoxville Whig, of the 25th says that the tales of want and starvation in Tennessee, so extensively circulated abrond, are greatly exaggerated. There is a general scareity- of grain, especially in five or six of the upper counties, owing to'the failure of the crops the last saason, and the temptation of exorbitant prices that indunced farmers to sell out too close. These with the early- winter and late spring, were enough to produice'seareity, but no one has yet perished and the false alarmi of "starvationl" is a vile calummny and slander on East Tennessee.

We are gld to hear this, and only wish thme same contradictory statement might prove true in every other part of the country. SmareK uY THuE good people down at Indianapolis, were frightened on 'Tuesday evening. They believe "down there" that the comet is going to kinock our little plandt "all to smash," and have been greatly exercised ablout it for sonic time. With this excitement, they- were thrown into a state of alarm on Tuesday eveninig that is described as "perfectly awful," by seeing the moon rise fi-om behind th'e eastern hills, as red as blood, and loonking like the great head of a firery dragoni. They thought it was the comet-that it was abiout to strik-thiat the end of all earthly things wvas at hand, and h.y set to work, with ryers anid tears and suplplications, to make thenr peace," aml1 to hbe ready to "go up," So frighitened were the-y.

MORRIS. Oh, think of me, my own beloved, Whatever cares beset thee! And when thou the falsehood proved, Of those with smiles who met thee! Whiie o'cr the sea, think, love, of me, Who never can forget thee; Let menor' trace the trysting place Where I with tears regret thee. Bright as yon star within my mind, A hand unseen, hath set thee; There hath thine image been enshrined Since first, dear love, I met thee; So in thy breast, I fain would rest, If, haply, fate would let meAnd live or die, wer't thou but nigh, To love or to regret me! In one of the New York Courts last week, a strapping negro was upon his trial for the murder of a white woman, who was found lying in an alley way, with her throat cut from ear to ear. The jurors were scrupulously examined on the point whether the prisoner, being a black, and his alleged victim white, would be likely to prejudice them. Two out of the twelve were found incompetent on that ground, and their places were supplied by others.

Augusta. Feb. 4 1857 tf 4 IRON PLOW STOCK! NOW ffer to the public my IRON PLOW STOCK. This Plow Stock was Patented Jan. let, and has now been in use long enough to prove, at least, that it is no humbug.

The advantages which are claimed for this, over the common plow stock, are these: 1st. Its simplicity and durability. 2d. Its adjustable arrangement by which the beam is raised or lowered at pleasure without changing the depth of the plow or the height of the handles. 3d.

The plow can be set any depth without changing the height of the beam or handles. 4. The handles can be raised or lowered at pleasure, without changing the height of the beam, or depth the plow. 5. It is well adapted to all soils, and to all manner of farming, at all seasons.

As a proof of what I have said above, I need only refer those who have not seen the plow, to the following names, which stand as high on the Agricultural lists of Georgia, (my native State) as any others; and also to those of the adjoining States of South Carolina and Alabama: Hon. M. A. CooPR, Etowah, Ga; Hon. Tues.
