the city and the delay was due to the heat Up In the vicinity of Obion the heat was so Intense pn a por-tlonof thg track that -the rails expanded for' the amount that had been allowed In Hying the traca First the expansion took up all of the slack space between the Joints of the rails but the heat increased and Anally the track buckled out so that It was Impossible to run the train over It It was necessary to cut out a piece of the rail and then force the -remainder back Into position before the train for the South could pass over the place When the weight of the rails along the Illinois Federate at' Louisville that there was no need of assistance Before reaching Midway Ky Gen Morgan ordered Mr Ellsworth and a man named Cabel Maddox to proceed to the town and capture the telegraph operator and his Instruments before news could be sent of their approach This was done the wire known as the "military line" being cut with an ax no harm being done to the local operator however Mr Ellsworth took charge of the office- and the Arst message he heard over the private railroad wire was from Gen Ilnnell commanding at Frankfort to Gen Ward at Lexington It stated that Gen Morgan with upward of 1000 men left Versailles at 10 that morniiig In the direction of Midway on the Georgetown pike Threw the Enemy Off Gen Morgan recognising that this was his position exactly sought to throw the enemy -off his track and In about- an hour Mr Ellsworth sent the following message to Gen -Ward at Lexington after cutting Frankfort off by the ground wire: message to you in relation to Morgan seems to be incorrect He has already driven in our pickets 1 here The capital of the State Is In danger Send us reinforcements but do not send them by The message was signed Gen Finnell and had the desired effect for Gen Ward marched his men about ten miles out on the Frankfort-pike at double quick time under the biasing July sun before he discovered the message was a bogus one This gave Gen Morgan time to destroy the railroad and telegraph lines when the march was taken up to Georgetown Ky At Georgetown Mr Ellsworth was prevented by a slight resistance from capturing the operator and his instruments hut he Anally scared him Into telling where the Instruments were they having been removed from the office Before Somerset Ky was reached Mr Ellsworth was ordered by Gen Morgan to go ahead with some picked men and capture the operator at that place before he could send out anything of Gen movements It was about 10 in the evening when Mr Ellsworth and his men arrived In Somerset and the only light to be seen In the town at that time was shining out of the telegraph of-Ace windows As Mr Ellsworth rushed upstairs the operator escaped out of the back window but a photographer who was in the office said that the operator had Just arrived from London Ky on horseback with a set of Instruments which he had Just Anlshed setting up and had not sent a line over the wire Louisville soon began to call and Mr Ellsworth answered A message was received "Keep a sharp lookout for Morgan He left Crab Orchard today" About an hour afterward Gen Morgan arrived and was given another message which' Mr Ellsworth had Intercepted as follows: "Danville July 21 Boyle Louisville: My force is green and lnsuffi dent to attack Morgon Geni Morgan appeared to be very much pleased with this message and told Mr Ellsworth he had better go to bed- The Louisville end of the telegraph line however wanted him to stay and watch for news of Gen Morgan and when he refused to do so they threatened to discharge Jiim The next morning Mr Ellsworth says he was requested by Gen Morgan to send the following telegrams: Ky July 22 George Prentice Editor Louisville Journal: I have passed through seventeen counties captured 7000 prisoners and destroyed one million worth of United States property" "At this point the Louisville operator broke ln and asked: "What do you mean by Mr Ellsworth answered: until you see how this message is signed" The message continued: well in Dixie The Louisville operator was surprised and Mr Ellsworth asked him if he would take another message He said go and then he sent this one: Somerset Ky July 22 1862 Gen Jerry Boyle Commanding Louisville: Good morning Jerry This telegraph Is a great Institution You should destroy it as it keeps us well posted My friend Ellsworth Levee and Improvement AssocisRlon Of this Hon Charles Scott of Rodedale Miss Is the president Yesterdhy Mr Graves said that he would write fo Mr Scott and Capt Patrick Henry the general representative ot the association about the matter of calling a general meeting of the association and about casing it for Memphis Some time since The Commercial Appeal took up the matter of having a general meetingjof the levee men here but that was befhre the appointment of the senate subcdrnmlttee and it was then deemed best my many of the prominent men In the csy to have a monster meeting In Daverfcort rather than have two smaller meetmgs -The present plan for a general meeting probably haqj its origin in a suggestion by Hon Thfmas Kernan of Baton Rouge In Nelv York He spoke with a number of frfends strongly for a meeting either of the association or a mass-meeting He will Usd be communicated with upon the subject Most of-thesnen who would come to the meeting woutl be from along the river and as the Illinois Central parallels it from one end to the other most of them would use that line Yesterday John A Scott division passenger agent for the line said tbit 1 he would make a special rate for the Ineeting that would be low enough to please all the delegates in the event of the meeting being called in Memphis It is likely that the other lines would do thefsame The Peabody
