When the first World War broke out, he entered the Austro-Hungarlan army, was taken prisoner by the Russians in 1916, and was sent to Siberia for two years. In 1921 he came to the United States as a newspaper correspondent, liking it so well he became a citizen in 1927.

He speaks fluent English and has taught at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and New York university, principally economics and history.
