But the real edge may have come early from a defense which gave up 96 points the past two weeks and which Ole Miss' struggling offense looked to ravage On its first series the Rebels mpved the ball to the Vandy 49 and Ole Miss quarterback Kent Austin (14 of 23 passes for 137 yards) tried to go to Henry Hill for a quick six Only Thanh Anderson came up with bis fourth interception of the year at the Vandy 28 and added 15 yards on the return The Commodores turned it into a Juick 7-0 lead with a nine-play rive capped by a 15-yard screen pass from Page to Woods behind Will Wolford block "That was rattling in his knees long enough to kick a 25-yard field goal with no time remaining yesterday to give the Auburn Tigers a come-from-behind 24-21 victory over a spirited Mississippi State squad at hosts Alabama Saturday in Jackson kick ended a furious Auburn comeback that began only three minutes earlier when Bulldog quarterback Don Smith fumbled at his own 32 Linebacker Gregg Carr made the recovery at the 33 giving Auburn its best field position since early in the second half The Tigers who trailed 21-7 at intermission and 21-14 when Smith fumbled needed just seven plays to tie the contest Facing a fourth-and-goal from the one fullback Reggie Ware dove over a pile of players for the TD McGinty added the all-important extra point with 3:13 to play The touchdown was almost a sure thing after quarterback Mike Mann hit Freddie Weygand for a 10-yard completion on the Bullie one The rally gained steam moments later when the Tigers forced the Bulldogs to punt Auburn took over at its own 39 with plenty of time to pull off the win Mann who earned the starting job from junior Pat Washington zipped an eight-yard pass to Trey Gainous at the MSU 33 Mann carried twice to put the Tigers well within range at the 23 But just to make things a little easier fullback Kyle Collins took two runs to get to the 18 before Auburn let the clock run down to two seconds then signaled in McGinty for the game-winning kick scared but I was shaking" said McGinty who had missed a 24-yard attempt in the first half wasn't that far of a kick so I have to slap at it that hard I just wanted to kick it nice and easy I knew I had made it when I hit Smith's costly fumble came just when State fans were beginning to taste their sweetest victory in some time The Bulldogs out-(See on Page D10) more running and Everett did a great job And the line was super on both the pass and run I could look everything That is not to say that everything was over for the Rebels who oddly enough had their best offensive day (367 yards) since the Memphis State game Just before halftime Austin who had been spelled by David McKinney for two series moved Ole Miss into position for a 50-yard line-drive quarter and a two-yard pass from Page to Scott making it a 30-13 game In the final quarter Vandy matched second touchdown within two minutes on a will Austin said threw that ball to Timmy five yards inside the end zone and the guy (Sykes) pushes him out That a touchdown 22-17 and maybe our defense fires The Rebs settled for a 30-yard Howard field goal But Vandy five-yard TD by Crawford with 8:01 quarterback had a big role in the outcome He scored first touchdown in the second quarter on a six-yard run then hit wide receiver Vince Carter on an 11-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth point-producer He scored one touchdown on a two-yard run that tied the game at (See REVEIZ on Page D10) provided what proved to be the winning points on a 22-yard field goal with 35 seconds left in the game It was 14th consecutive field goal which matches his personal best He also passed the legendary Gene McEver as all-time scoring leader Reveiz had seven points yesterday to eclipse mark of 276 big day was also aided by his close friend and teammate Jimmy Colquitt the Vol punter Colquitt punted twice for a 605-yard average average His best was a 64-yarder on Tennessee's first series Colquitt true to tradition got off a quick kick that got the Vols out of terrible ATLANTA Ga If Johnny Majors had written the Ten Commandments of football the first item would have read shalt have a solid kicking The second would have read shalt have a solid kicking And the third would read the same Get the idea? Majors would rather go to war without a gun than play football without a solid kicking game It was his deep-rooted buief in this phase of the game that carried the Volunteers to a heart-stopping 24-21 win over Georgia Teen in front of 45167 fans Vol placekicker Fuad Reveiz gaged in one of Southern most remembered games The Vols won 6-0 and Majors had a hand or foot if you will in that one He threw a pass for the only touchdown and put on a punting exhibition that was classic Neither Reveiz nor Colquitt could be faulted for not recalling the details of that one but they will certainly be able to recount the details of yesterday's win record is 4-2-1 while Tech slipped to 33-1 The Vols now have a week off before r-Mike Fleming- Tiger fans anxious to face UT ATLANTA THERE IS a feeling among ninny Tmntgp fan rrartlrnlurlv those with roots in Memphis that the me most crucial game to come for the vols is Nov 10 in Knoxville against Memphis State waiting lor the time to come MEMPHIS STATE AT this point clearly has a better team Tennessee is struggling and even figure to be favored over any of its remaining opponents Memphis State Ole Miss Kentucky and Vanderbilt The roster looks like an outtake of MASH while the Tigers have been remarkably free of injuries The Tigers are optimistic about a possible bowl berth The Vols meanwhile are not Tennessee has no chance for the Southeastern Conference championship and even predicting a bowl right now is at best risky Everything is upbeat at MSU The football team has made a remarkable jump from that early season disaster at Ole Miss Tennessee's situation is considei ably different There are some disgruntled fans (See TIGER on Page D10) flexed its muscles eight times against Tennessee and eight times it has walked away disappointed ft could be different this time Memphis State fans have been saying for a couple of weeks that they can't wait for the knoxville trip They are buying a lot of tickets so many in fact that Tennessee athletic department officials are quick to say it's an indication the Tigers are smelling blood MSU's fans want to be there to hopefully see a history-making achievement And who can blame them? Tennessee fans here for yesterday's Tech game (a 24-21 Vol victory) at least those with Memphis connections can begin to envision the carnage They see a Tiger victory as nothing short of an imagesapping disaster They do not take the time however to look at the other side They do not consider for example that Tiger fans have been waiting waiting and Oh the Georgia Tech game played here yesterday mattered Ole Mia Kentucky and 1 Vanderbilt matter too But to those who follow the Vols the game on the 10th is more than just a football game The reasoning is Mike Fleming simple: Those fans know Memphis State has perhaps its best chance ever of getting the Vols MSU has never beaten Tennessee in football and it remains a burr beneath the Tigers' saddle Memphis State has Vols Johnnie Jones looks for daylight against Georgia Tech.
