'A Section Sunday July 4 2004 wwwreporternewscom Sbilene Eeporter-ilrto i- KTAB KRBC to become a little closer P' 'W' 1 Sr '1 merican I I i i i with this selection of nmems songs from several genres By Brian Murphy Reporter-News Staff Writer Billy Martin returned to f- manage the New York Yankees after getting fired Actress Elizabeth Taylor married Richard Burton twice Rock roller Sammy back in the Vhn Halen fold after the brief Gary Cherone experiment And two of television stations are moving back In together 25 years after their Brien Murphy CBS affiliate KTAB-TV will pack up its offices at 5401 14th St and move nine blocks into the longtime studio cf KRBC-TV 4510 14th St The move continues the efforts to cut costs Irving-based Nexstar Broadcasting Group Inc owns KTAB (Channel 32 Cox Communications cable Channel 10) Mission Broadcasting of Ohio owns KRBC In almost every city where Nexstar owns a station Mission owns a station (Wichita Falls and Amarillo among them) Usually Mission stations work out deals where they hire Nexstar stations to produce newscasts and handle bookkeeping video production and other tasks (although advertising and programming decisions are kept separate) In some cities the Nexstar and Mission stations are under one foot no surprise KTAB and KRBC are moving in together As KTABKRBC General Manager Gayle Kiger explains cheaper to maintain one house Instead of two It is interesting that of all the stations to cohabitate we're talking about KTAB and -I KRBC In 1979 longtime Abilene broadcaster Bill Terry left KRBC after 20 years of employ- ment moved down South 14th Street to put the brand-new KTAB on the air and took a bundi of KRBC employees with him That broadcasting divorce from oldest TV station brought our city a flill-time CBS affiliate and created a few hard feelings among those forced to choose sides Kiger said KTAB is moving to building despite the fret it is significantly older than studio because KRBC has space left over from the days when a radio station broadcast from there On the air KTAB may redesign its anchor desk and backdrop when it moves into building and it plans to install digital broadcasting equipment that will improve picture quality I But Kiger said viewers will not see a combined team of journalists reporting for both stations Although the stations share a news director in Tom Vodak (noted for his reports) anchors and reporters will continue reporting for only one station at a time meaning you aren't going to see Downing Bolls on KTAB or Bob Bartlett return to his forma: job at KRBC Kiger Said winHriatlng the operations will not result in fewer Jobs Some jobs were shed last year when the sta-' tlons began sharing some serv-l ices but Kiger said he does not anticipate letting anyone go once the stations share an ydHraM That gang would be a happi- er ending than Liz Taylor got from her second failed mar- riage to Burton Contact artientertaifiment wittar Brian Murphy at muphyMraporternewicom or 6788760 Pablo Pablo redid his ode to the mid-Atlantic states to encourage the entire nation to take pride in the US of A after the 911 terrorist attacks Preamble" Lynn Abrams If you watched Rock" on ABC as a kid you probably learned how the Constitution starts thanks to this ditty Star-Spangled Oak Ridge Boys The lovely a cappella version has been played or sung by the guys themselves at countless ballgames with good reason Doodle James Cagney From the film of the same title movie tough guy Cagney made an indelible mark as songand-dance man George Cohan the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Aaron Tippin Another song about how the United States offers opportunity and liberty in the John Cougar MeUencampi Americans invented rock rolL So why not honor the musicians who made it great?
