270-pound nine year veteran in baseball Kuhn fails to sanction plan Baseball commissioner Bowie Kahn Thursday refused to sanction the American League's proposed plan to expand to Toronto in 1977 until some provision is made to provide a team in Washington DC "It is difficult for me to see how I can ignore the American League's failure to provide for Washington" Kuhn said "At the same time I must give the American League high marks for its consistent cooperation with the Franchise Committee Kuhn has said for the last several years expansion into Washington was essential to the long-term interests of the game and should be given priority to any plans to expand Bus service expanded The special bus service to St Louis Cardinal baseball games has been expanded in Belleville the Bi-State transit system has announced A new line has been added The branch will serve the area along 17th St and North Belt The new line will run from 17th St Main via 17th St and will stop at the Bel-Air Bowl The line will then continue on North Belt Main and State Sts The bus will continue along 7th St Broadway Ave and will cross the Eads Bridge From there it will go directly to the stadium The other branch will cover the same route as last from High Main Sts via Main St to North Belt The line will then continue on Main and Stale Sts covering the same route as the new branch Buses on both branches will pick passengers up at all local bus stops from Belleville to 3rd then non-stop to the stadium Adult cash fare on all lines will be 75 cents plus a 10-eent zone charge Children under 13 will pay half the adult fare Regular weekly passes will be good on all Red Bird Express buses upon a payment of 45 cent plus zone charges Senior citizens and blind persons with Bi-State Identification Cards to use both "quality" and "depth" to describe his team this year For while most teams point to a number of prime individuals Armstrong can rattle off names and numbers which may make his Maroons a force to be reckoned with this spring Among those names are senior Rob Davenport and sophomore Bob Weilmuenster distance runners who qualified for the state tournament last year Also high on Armstrong's list are junior sprinters Tim Armstrong and Mark Collins junior distance man Jim Bartlesmeyer and senior hurdler Pat Compton to name a few All are lettermen "We have had a lot of experience on the track and I think we have a lot of depth" Armstrong says "East St Louis and Alton are the two teams everybody will be looking to beat but I think we're going to challenge if we do OO I A Relays And Saturday should prove no different when seven area squads along with Mt Vernon converge on the fast Lancer track for the third annual affair Field events get underway at 11 am while running events open up at noon As usual the relays offer an interesting way to get the spring track season off and running Not only are all events set up on a team relay rather than individual basis but the sophomore and varsity scores are added together to produce an overall champion And although most squads have had a dual meet or two most are still trying to find what talent the other teams jumper Joe Slimack relay man Al Hursey and hurdler Rick Valdeviez In the field Chuck Harrison and Gary Dedmon will help fill some of the jumping spots while Kevin Seelman and Stan Dickerson take over the pole vaulting Others who merit watching will be quarter-miler Todd Fink middle distance man Rick Kasten and John Henry "This team has worked hard to accomplish what they have" Browning says "We'll
