SAN JOSE, Aug. 7. -Rev. Father Charles T. Greenwood, recently transferred to St.

Joseph's church In this city from Santa Barbara, was very seriously hurt yesterday" morning when the bicycle the was riding was hit by a car of the (Blossom route at Park avenue and Orchard street. The car and the bicyclist came together with a thud, and Father 'Greenwood was throan back from the car with a serious gash over the right eye, another under the eye, and with his nose badly bruised. The Injured man was carried to the Emergency Hospital, where it was found necessary to take several stitches In the wounds about the eye. "Whether or not there are any Internal Injuries or the bleeding from the nose will prove i serious has not yet been ascertained. The view, both on Park avenue and street, Is obscured by trees and by buildings, and neither the bicyclist nor the motorman could see the other until an instant before the accident occurred.

Father Greenwood arrived in SJan Jose Saturday from Santa Barbara. SOCIALISTS WAR SCOUTS Declare Movement a Menace to Labor in Times of Violence. BALTIMORE, Aug. 7. The Maryland branch of the socialist party is about to 'launch' a campaign against the existence of the Boy Scouts, which it condemns as an organisation that will prove harmful to laboring classes.

Two reasons are set forth for this action. One Is that the organisation was imported from Europe and the othor that the knowledge of warfare the boys learn from drills would make It possible for them to Interfere with workmen on strike. Two girls were killed and eight other persons were hurt, some of them seriously, when an automobile containing six children and two men dashed Into an electric car the Fair Haven bridge tonight. 7. Nine persons were injured late yesterday when the auto mobile In which they were riding over turned at Fox Lake. Two of the Injured were babies, and one was a 5-year-old girl. All except a chauffeur were mem bers of the family of L. A.

Sweetman of this city. The (injuries to Mr. and Mrs. Sweetman and 'to one of the babies were serious. Nine other persons were injured when an automobile, driven by Louis Morgan-stein here, was struck by a street car.

In the latter car also was a baby and a 5-year-old girl. HOLD-BE SUICIDE DIES HERO'S DEATH Valleio Barber Plunges Into Water to Save Life of Excursionist. VALLEJO, Aug. 7. Robert Robelsky, a barber, after several unsuccessful attempts to commit suicide, met his death here last night by drowning In an effort to save Frank Becker, an employe of the Mare Island navy yard.

Robelsky was one of a party of twenty excursionists who left here yesterday morning on a steam launch for a trip to Ophelia Grove on the Napa river. He complained of feeling dissatisfied with life and had to be restrained several times from Jumping overboard. The excursion appeared to restore the spirits of Robelsky. When the launch was passing, the old terro-cotta works three miles north of "Vallejo, Becker accidentally fell over board. Robelsky immediately plunged overboard to rescue him.

He sank from sight while making for Becker, who was rescued by other members of the party, FIRST AMERICAN BORN IN CALIFORNIA DIES SAN JOSE. Aug. 7. William E. Moultrey, the first white child of Amer ican parents born in California, died yesterday morning at the home of his parents.

Moultrey was a son of Riley Moultrey, who headed the party which went to the relief of the historic Donner party In the winter, or is7. lie was Dorn in Santa Clara Mission, where the JTamily had gone in the fall of 1847 for safety from disturbances growing out of the Mexican var. The elder Moultrey came to this State In 1846 on an exploring trip.

He returned to the East and married at St. Joseph. and then came hack to California in 1847 with a considerable party of venturesome' people. Mrs. Moultry is stljl living and tells interesting stories of: her early experiences here.
