wm-4 afj A i pM" -v 'H CoW M- 8D Abilene Reporter-News Friday Aug 7 1992 fr 11' 1 WIW 'S iV --W 4 Ml Garth echo Tejaeo Business Report Tom CraigScott Kirk i i i i i i More stores opening in the Mall of Abilene i i i i I i The Mall of Abilene is expanding its menu of shopping delicacies Payless Kids a shoe store for children opened July 30th It specializes in shoe sizes from pre-walker to size 4 The store is owned by Volume Shoe Corporation of Topeka Kan a division of the May Company A grand opening celebration is planned in September Holidays a Christmas and seasonal gift store will open Aug 28 Holidays formally Holly Days has operated as a temporary store for the past three years and will now open as a permanent tenant It is locally owned by Chris Gaines current owner and operator of Korner a apparel store in the mall 1 The addition of these retail outlets boosts the Mall of occupancy rate to 94 percent the growing audience for country music which may have never worn a pair of boots before Garth Brooks is quite the showman and you know aware enough of the business to know what pushes buttons But while big on dramatics not fake By the way the funniest moment of the night was the announcement that preceded the lights going out before Brooks and the band came on and GENNN-TLEMENNNN the announcer went bringing 8000 people to their feet in one big roar there is no smoking in the Big groan What Abilene got last Friday night was the concert of the The total package of star sound effects and crowd reac-tion surpassed my expectations which had been high The ticket price was right and hey the basic Garth Brooks concert T-shirt was just $15 When is the last time a T-shirt cost less than the ticket? So Garth Brooks you did good It was worth the wait the sweat and all the hoopla Lots of Goodwill Radio station KEAN gave Abilenians a sort of Christmas on the last day of July when it opened two phones from 2:304 pm Friday to auction eight pair of Garth Brooks tickets The bids on the tickets all prime seats totaled $2568 Face value the 16 tickets cost $272 at $17 each But the auction winners paid an average of $165 per seat That actually been a bargain for Gale Tobin who called in the top bid of $515 for a pair of tickets Overall KEAN took 217 different bids for tickets Hie top six bidders got their tickets without worry Then from a hopper the names of two other fans who had turned in a minimum bid of $34 were drawn Ironically both random winners had offered just the face value total What a deal for them great seats without having to stand in line a week at Garth World Hie $2568 goes directly to Goodwill of Abilene Director Tiny Glover operated the auction board special guest was Martina McBride the petite singer who opened the concert that night Home on the dial Hendrick names top Allison Anderson The winyiugwwiamt famm of Hendrick Medical Center named six employees of the quarter for the third quarter: Rhonda Allison business office 9 years Robert Anderson phar 4 6 I macy 9 years Trinia Cook ambulatory surgery 22 years Gregory Drain surgical services 11 years Terry Stubbe cardio-pul-monary services 13 years and Maria Villarreal accounting 12 years Hendrick employees of the quarter are nominated by secret ballot from employees An anonymous committee receives substantial information on each TirrminnA before meeting to vote The winners receive a framed certificate and $50 In December the employee of the year will be selected by popular vote from among the 24 employees of the quarter definitely rank right on up there Some of the great per formers have been through lene the last 100 years or so Maybe Jack Nicklaus never did play the LaJet (etc) golf tournaments but country singer Garth Brooks did come here when he was No 1 Friday night two months-plus of anticipation ended in reality when this Garthman appeared in the middle of one of the largest ever stages set up in the Taylor County Coliseum From the sell-out first look at the record-setting singer it was total pandemonium A lot of folks saw special and others have had a chance to see Brooks in concert elsewhere I think the concensus is that Brooks brought to Abilene the same ldgh-energy show that has electrified crowds in major concert halls Brooks admitted quickly he feeling great hut I believe that when he finished his Greg Jaklewicz Abilene aliL opening song and the spotlights illuminated 8000 people going absolutely crazy he was inspired to overcome whatever ailed him The concert provided country music fans quite a contrast to another sold-out show here this year George concert in February The two artists are certainly among the best in country though each takes a -radically different approach in his presentation Brooks spent most of the evening on the move working the crowd on all sides of the Stage sitting on the edge of the stage for an up-close and per-V sonal version of "Unanswered and yukking it up with his other musicians All that was missing from his TV special from Dallas' Reunion Arena was swinging on a power cord and bashing his guitar Instead Garth unstrapped his instrument grabbed a marker and autographed it for Chase Loyd 5 his special guest on stage for the rowdy conclusion to in Low Instances like that and politely accepting all flowers stuffed animals hats and handshakes that came his way further endeared the blue-eyed Oklahoman to his fans As music industry role models go Brooks just about be beat He has resolved the temptations of his job with his wife end gives credit for his success where credit is due But he still is mischievious enough to come up with a third verse to in Low or some Elvis the Pelvis moves to accentuate I actually appreciated the fact that Brooks was struggling with his voice The drama intensified what live performance is all about He quite i sure how would go I because the song requires him to stretch his singing even when healthy But an emotional song not opera and he pulled it off like he meant it Ike Garthman pitched his new album coming out in Sep-I tember teasing the crowd with Shall Be The gospel-inspired song is a reminder that country artists have ex-I panded their worlds from the barrooms and motel rooms to commenting on the world 'I around us a reflection on Here'e a
