presidential candidates will be stumping for their men in Brownwood the next two days US Congressman Marvin Leath will be at the Brownwood Municipal Airport at 2 pm Thursday to raise a cheer for Dick Gephardt a Democratic candidate On the other side of the fence prominent Republican Tom Crowley of San Angelo will be the stand-in for vice president George Bush on Friday at a candidates reception at the Adams Street Community Center at 7 pm Crowley is part of a statewide network of speakers representing the vice president Also on Saturday the Golden Key Rebekah Lodge No 26 is sponsoring a candidates rally at 6:30 pm on the corner of Avenue and 12th St Martin correspondent says the number of criminals in the district has decreased because convinced them that they don't want to come here to commit Thornton says supporters have been trying to spread the word that the judge is not strong on crime and that he may not be clearing the docket as fast as it could be cleared However Eden says he made negative comments about Thornton not trying to attack Judge Thornton in any Eden says tried many cases with him and never had a strong disagreement with him As far as my dealings with him I've ago lawyer CJ Eden turned down the opportunity to run for judge of the 90th District and recommended RE Thornton for the spot even though Thornton had no experience as a judge Now Eden has decided he wants the job and is challenging Thornton for the bench and now Thornton is saying Eden get the job because he has no experience as a judge experience of making rulings may be an advantage or may not Eden admits been reversed a few times by the appeals court not always right but I always be right Thornton 59 says his experience on the bench is a mqjor advantage takeB at least two years time to be an effective sitting he says use his first two years in office learning about the job I already have that behind But Eden 67 says his advantage is that in touch with many aspects of the community He elections The three major races in the county sheriff and Precinct 1 and 3 county commissioners have each drawn at least four candidates County Democratic chairman Cecil Darby Jr said he is expecting a record turnout of voters For sheriff no one specific issue has emerged Incumbent Sheriff Bill Baird said the main issue Bee ms to be doinp my job as I Baird was appointed sheriff in 1983 and was soon By MICHELLE MORRIS Staff Writer About one in 10 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime and the risk increases with age the American Cancer Society says why there's so much excitement about the 1988 Texas Breast Screening Project which for the second year will provide low-cost mammograms to symptom-free women for a limited period Physicians recommend women have a breast-screening mammogram when they turn 35 to provide an X-ray record for comparison in later screenings important to diagnose problems as early as possible in order to cure said Dr Dale Brannom radiologist at Radiology Associates Fortunately he said no problems are found in the majority of women who receive mammograms Women age 35 and up may qualify to receive a mammogram for about half the normal cost through the statewide ACS program Mammography is a low-dose X-ray of the breast that can detect early breast cancer about two years before it can be felt Brannom said the procedure shows lesions or suspect areas that are not detectable with the other two important screening procedures: breast self-examination and yearly examination by a physician Although some questions were raised in the mid-1970s about the possibility of radiation exposure itself causing breast cancer no case of breast cancer has ever been traced to the use of a screening mammography officials say Mammograms are about 90 percent accurate in detecting breast tumors program is an effort to attract women to develop the habit of breast health" Brannom said Breast cancer is a leading killer of women in the United
