Writer recalls shooting of Eddie Waitkus in '49 BY IRA BERKOW NEW YORK: It was a grim coincidence that Eddie Waitkus should die so soon after the insane savagery of the Munich Olympic. For he and it provide a thread in my life. The gun-blast that shattered the midnight stillness on June 14, 1949, and sent Eddie Waitkus crashing against the wall of a room in Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel, rocked me, too. I was then a nine-year-old baseball fan living on the West Side. I was also a would- OSU frosh honored COLUMBUS, O.

(UPI): Ohio State coach Woody Hayes was as good as his word when he told young Archie Griffin he would be playing some football for the Buckeyes "by the middle of the season." It's not quite the middle of the season, but Griffin, a Midwest report freshman tailback who just turned 18 years old, is playing some kind of football for the Buckeyes. His performance Saturday against North Carolina, in which he set in a school rushing record of 239 yards in 27 carries, earned him honors as United Press International midwest back of the week. GRIFFIN, A 5-10, 184- pounder who decided to stay in his hometown to play collegiate ball after an outstanding career at Eastmoor High School, came off the bench early in the first period in the Buckeyes' 29-14 win over North Carolina. From then on, the Ohio State offense began to move and, with Griffin running behind the blocking of fullback Randy Keith, piled up 430 net yards rushing. One of eight children, seven of them boys, Griffin said he "thought it was great" that freshmen are eligible to play major college ball this season, but added, "I had my doubts if I could All six of Archie's brothers are or have been involved in football.

be first baseman, in the style of Waitkus, a former who the winter before been had" traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. I HAD gone several times to 1 Wrigley Field and watched the lanky, long-faced, lefthanded Waitkus. He had a cool and buttery style around the first base bag. I remember trying to imitate his wonderful and yet almost comical little midair jitterbug of stretching, catching the ball and toeing the base all in one smooth motion. I admired him.

But I was not alone. I found out after that June 14th night Chicago teen-ager thated Ruth Steinhagen also was fond of him, but in a totally different way. She must have been in some of the crowds that I was in that waited an hour after games in the cool tombs under the Wrigley Field stands and cheered as the players emerged all haireh slicked and deific. 24 Don Herrmann (85) of the New York Giants is spilled by Nate Ramsey (24) of Philadelphia after Herrmann made a first down on a pass from Giants' quarterback Norm Snead in the second period. Johnson sets records, leads Giants' victory PHILADELPHIA (UPI): New York Giants running back Ron Johnson is a tired but happy man today.

Johnson set a new club record by scoring four touchdowns last night, in leading the Giants 27-12 victory over the Philadlephia Eagles in Veterans Stadium. PLAYING perhaps his finest game since recovering from injuries in 1971, Johnson ran five yards for one score and caught TD passes of 16, 9 and 15 yards from Norm Snead as the Giants routed the Eagles. Johnson racked up 128 XU's Banks returning BY BOB QUEENAN Xavier's Musketeers will probably have three of their top players, who missed the 25-7 loss to Miami last Saturday, back, in action for the Northern Illinois game a at DeKalb on Saturday. Running back Al Banks, hobbled since the Temple game, was given the okay yesterday by doctors to resume play. Wide receiver Kim Knoppe and fullback Pat Ragon are also expected back for NIU Huskies game with only Ragon classified doubtful.

RUNNING BACK Bob Pickard, who suffered a bruised knee and Rick Killewald, who slightly injured an elbow, were the only Muskies damaged in the Miami fiasco. "There's no doubt about it," said Cecchini viewing the films of the after, game, "we weren't ready to play. "And Northern Illinois is the same type of team as Cecchini continued, almost wincing as he spoke. "They're 2-2 like we are, but one of those losses was to Wisconsin. yards on the ground in 37 carries, and another 60 yards by catching passes. Snead completed 12 of 19 for 164 yards as the Giants notched their first victory of the season. The game was as much a story of Philadelphia's lack of scoring punch as it was of Johnson's heroics. ROOKIE quarterback John Reaves, starting his first game, drove the Eagles to first downs inside the Giant 30-yard line seven times, but Philadelphia's only touchdown came on a five-yard Reaves to rookie Po James third quarter. pathe The eagles settled for field goals of 27, and 15 yards by Tom Dempsey after the Giants' defense stalled drives of 69 and 66 yards.

Dempsey UPI picks USC again NEWYORK (UPI): College football's first big upset week failed to stir the nation's top two teams, Southern Cailfornia and Oklahoma. While Colorado, Tennessee and Arizona State were feeling the sting of early-season defeat, the No. 1 Trojans and No. 2 Sooners maintained their lofty positions atop the United Press International board of coaches rating with customary one-sided victories. Southern Cal, coming off a 51-6 routing of Michigan State, picked up 22 first place votes and 336 points this week and Oklahoma followed suit with a 52-3 clubbing of Clemson to snare 11 No.

Waldespuhl's 67 shocks Plummer in local PGA Gordon Waldespuhl fired a four-under-par 67 yesterday at Maketewah to oust medalist Dick Plummer from the first round of match play in the Greater Cincinnati PGA Match-Medal Play Tournament. Plummer's 72 was good enough to earn medalist honors, but when the match play began, Waldespuhl got hot and eliminated Plummer 4 and 3. Second round matches will be played today. Ruth Steinhagen, later adjudged a schizophrenic, got a room at the Edgewater Beach Hotel when the Phillies were in town and staying there. She sent a message to Waitkus.

She urged him to come to her room. She said she had some "important information" for him. When he came, opened the door and then put a bullet hole through his lung. MIRACULOUSLY, Waitkus not only survived after four operations but went on to play the full 154 games next season: a member of the winning Whiz Kids. I don't remember what 1 did or even what: I thought when I found out about the shooting.

But I know I have never forgotten it. The bullet ripped a hole through my idea that sports were not a part of the real world, that they were impregnable to the madness around us. Although Waitkus lived through the shooting, was learning of the mortality of men, which included athletes. WAITKUS WAS 53 when he died of cancer of the esophagus in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston. His sister, Mrs.

Stella Kasperwicz, does not believe that the shooting directly affected his death. "But it might have taken away, some of his endurance," she said. "AS TIME went on I just became nuttier and nuttier about the guy," Ruth Steinhagen told the felony court, "and I knew I would never get to know him in a normal way, so I kept thinking I will never get him and if I can't have him nobody else can. And then I decided I would kill him. I didn't know how or when, but I knew I would kill him Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
