A Lenten Meditation All Men Must Make Their Choice Between Self-Ego And Christ By THI RiV. VWUAM M. IKOWN (Pastor Of Ivlhvran Pari(h) The appointed Gospel reading in many of our churches for the first Sunday in Lent is the account of our Lord's temptation as recorded in Matthew 4: 1-11. It should be noted that this is that point of isolation and self-searching between his baptism by John and the beginning of his preaching. While we may somewhat casually regard this event as a one-sided contest between Christ and the devil and simply part of the whole narrative, it is surely more than that.

We may probe deftly through the three individual assaults to i some general meaning someone else may have missed. How many avid Bible students there are who delight in making, the clever point or finding the lucid way of putting it! This, too, is a temptation. Temptation is often very subtle and we are unwary. And if you think the writer has been successfully tempted to criticise, you're right! The devil is the cleverest of all. Very seriously, we are personally involved in the temptation of Jesus.

First of all, it was an attempt to abort all that our Lord came to do for us. The whole life of Jesus could have been turned into some kind of a comic opera; instead, it became the drama of man's redemption surpassing any significant course of events ever involving the life of mankind. Secondly, the temptation is the perfect illustration of the experience of every human being, that of being confronted with alternatives, whether to choose good or evil, the difficult or the easy, the way of self-gratification or the way of service and sacrifice. In total, what shall I do with my life? Shall I respond to my ego or to the God who loves me? Gaithersburg, now assistant principal at Poolesville High School, has been named as the principal there.
