The participant points the gun toward his head, spins the gun's cylinder and pulls the trigger .... there's one chance in six that he will kill himself. In a financial sense, farming can be even more chancy, because crop yields are affected by more than one chance for disaster. This year in Kossuth County, for example, farmers have already worried about moisture, frost, hail and most recently, southern corn leaf blight. Now, still another crop menace has been detected in the county-the European corn borer. - IN SOUTH KOSSUTH The county Extension office reports a count of two to five borers on corn stalks in the southern part of the county. However, farmers generally don't resort to spraying for borers until infestation reaches half to three-quarters of all stalks in a given field. The Extension Office merely advises farmers to check their fields early so that they will have time to treat the borers if they so decide. "The borers are getting into the whorls now," Extension Director John Ley said. "They can still be killed while they are on the leaves or in the whorls, but spraying won't help much after the borers tunnel into the stalk. 1 ' Ley said the borers could be even more of a menace this year than the anticipated southern corn blight. The blight attacks the whole plant, preventing growth of the ear. Borers can topple the stalk or cause the ear to fall off before it can be picked. - 'A REAL PROBLEM' "We seem to be on the course to a real problem," Ley said. "We have toe makings of a bad year for corn borers, judging by the moth count (288) from °ur experimental farm at Kanawha." Ley said the effects of the borers will take place in the next three weeks before the larva enter the pupa stage. Spray pilots in the county have been extremely busy spraying in southwest Iowa and elsewhere. Elmer Steier of Whittemore has worked in Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Kossuth County as well as the Missouri Valley area in southwest Iowa and have also done some work in Kossuth County and in Minnesota. The pioneer Seed Corn plant in Algona, with 4,500 acres in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota in its care, reported it was "just finishing up" on spraying Friday. - 2 BANDS Wed., July 7 - 9 to 1 POLKA PADRE and ELMER WOOD ORCH.
