I sports Abilene Reporter-News comics- markets- ABILENE TEXAS SATURDAY MORNING MARCH 31 1979 Cooper Qualifies a Bunch r-'jf 'v By ART LAWLER Sports Editor SAN ANGELO-Midland Lee Cooper and San Angelo will use quanlty Saturday in an attempt to end defending state champion Killeen's 11-meet win streak Killeen as always will counter with its outstanding quality during Saturday's finals in the AAAA division of the San Angelo Relays Cooper and San Angelo qualified 11 individuals and two relay teams apiece and lee managed 10 qualifiers and both relays on the first beautiful track afternoon of the 1179 season Killeen got only six of its athletes to the finals but the Kangaroos will be heavily favored to win both relays Midland and Hereford sent six each to the finals plus a sprint relay team but neither school will enter the mile-relay competition Frustrated Abilene High Coach Lyndon Gathright watched several of his players Just min the finals but he still wound up with six individuals and both relay teams for Saturday's finale The most impressive performances turned in by local athletes may have been a pair of 400 meter performances by Abilene High's Eddie Guillen and Cooper's Ricky Thompson In a cross-town rivalry which is becoming more Intense by the day Guillen posted a career-best 494S while finishing second In his heat to El Paso Burges' Doug Villaret who was clocked in 41(5 But Thompson stung by public comments made earlier by Guillen countered with a 499 clocking of his own while winning his heat with ease (CHS) mad at me for what I said in the paper" said Guillen who had said earlier in the week that he doesn't think Thompson can beat him and that he's just better than Thompson The quiet Cooper senior when reminded of Guillen's comments by one of the coaches simply said "He'll get his chance to prove Actually hell get two chances-first In Saturday's finals then again in District 5-AAAA competition next Friday in Big Spring Cooper's ailing sprinter Charles See GUILLEN Pg 4C -r First lor Raine Charles Rainey coasts to the wire easily winning his heat in the 100-metcrs in the preliminaries at the San Angelo Relays JL Straining Friday Rainey won it with a time of 106 and advances to finals (Staff Photo by Gerald Ewing) Williams Has Off Day But Takes Third Steve Defosses of Baird with an intense look on his face prepares to win first in the shot put at the San Angela Relays Friday Defosses won with a throw of 534 (Staff Photo by Gerald Ewing)- Throw Grabs First For Defosses By ROBERT VERNON Sports Writer SAN ANGELO Lowell Williams was having an off day and he knew it The Sweetwater senior was throwing the discus around 110 feet In warmup at Friday's San Angelo Relays but he was having trouble staying in the ring His trouble continued Into the finals snd Williams got off only one legal throw good enough for 157-11 and third place but not as good ss he would have liked Rick Schlader of Kerrville Tivy won the event with a throw of 158-5 Jim Johnson of Levelland was second at 159-0 Roth were modest throws compared with what Williams was throwing in warmup but they threw the heat when it counted and Williams couldn't argue with that Just didn't have a real good day" he said haven't had trouble staying in the ring until the last two weeks I'm not sure what it is" Asked if it was a lark of concentration Williams said "Yeah that and I was real tense I don't know why I Just was I was really hoping 1 could get 190 today" Williams has thrown 175-1 and is the Abilene area leader In the only other AAA division event I seUled Friday Van Pearcy of Andrews won the long jump with a leap of 234 I Pearcy managed that jump on his first attempt in the finals He scratched twice In the prelims and took only one Jump in the finals "I only hit the board good he said "It felt pretty good" The outstanding sophomore also qual- 1 Ified for the finals in the 200 and 400 me- ters and helped hla team qualify in the mile relay In each event he looked as if he was running at leu than full throttle "I was Juat trying to qualify he said "My coach told me to take It easy I've got plenty left for the lack of competition In four of his six meets this season he has set records His only misses were at Comanche where he lost to Funderburg snd st San Angelo "I wanted that record but I just wasn't he said "I was trying too hard 1 was In the only other two A-B events where finals were held Friday Charleson Stein-bock of Laabuddie won the pole vault at 134 and Tommy Morrow of Stanton won the high jump at (-2 Among the stranger happenings of the day the officials weren't psying attention during the prelims of the 100-yard dash and the runners ended up running just 90 yards That accounted for such record-setting times ss 942 by Lavance Coppige of Crosbyton and 95 by Billy Terry of McCamey and Mosea Cisneros of San Saba By ROBERT VERNON Spurts Writer SAN ANGELO It'i tough when you perform well and (till win convincingly Just ask Baird's Steve Defosses The Baird senior put the shot just 534 a far cry from his best of 55-5V4 and still won the event in the first day of competition In the A-B division of the San Angelo Relays here Friday He not only won the event he won it by more than a foot over his nearest competition Eugene Neeper of San Saba (SM) "I blew it" he said afterward "I attacking it because I was so afraid of scratching I lost my first meet last week to Funderburg (Mike of Breck-enridge) because I scratched on two 57-plus throws and I was scared I was going to scratch again today" Defuses said his biggest problem is (Kff Phele by GraM Drift) LOWELL WILLIAMS PREPARES TO THROW wlni 3rd is discus with 157-11 msmssm McM Signs Coles iiskfMiMirrar mnmm' Terry Carries Some Kick With His Sidekick Glen Coles the top running back off Brownwood's 1979 Class AAA stale championship team signed an agreement to play for the McMurry College Indians it was announced Friday Coles earned all-district and second team all-state honors in 1979 as he rushed for 14M yards and scored 21 touchdowns as the Lions rolled to a 154 record "We're just elated to have an outstanding prospect like Glen to sign with us" said McMurry head coach Spud Aldridge "He was among the top backs in the state this past year and he possesses all the tools to be an outstanding college player But what really sets Glen apart is his outstanding character He'll really be a credit to our program" CoSes 5-3 149 pounds is quick and has good moves He was a district champion sprinter on the Lion's track team last spring He has game-breaking ability scoring several of his touchdowns on punt and kick-off returns He returned a punt for a score in last year's state championship game "Glen is one of the finest competitors that I've ever had play for me" said Brownwond head coach Gordon Wood "He's a winner We couldn't have won last year without him "He made the single greatest play that I've ver seen a Lion player make in one of our ptayoff games against Crosby' Wood added Terry compares UHF to FM radio It took FM a while to catch on because people weren't sure just what It meant but once they found out that they could get as good or better sounds off FM it became generally accepted can get a very good picture from UHF if you handle everyting along the route Terry said got to have good power a good signal and a good antenna" Ah yes the antenna In town the signal ought to be good enough that a small UHF antenna which often resembles either a small hoop or a big bow-tie ought to be sufficient Folks in the outlying areas might have more trouble if they don't put up a larger antenna Of course all that can be avoided if on the cable Terry expects to occupy Channel 10 on the cable in most markets That's the channel KDFW from Dallas is on However TV Cable Service of Abilene Inc plans to drop that station as soon as KTAB goes on the air Speaking of getting on the air Terry would like to accomplish that feat sometime in the early fall Many observers including KTXS General Manager Bob Jackson figure it should be sometime in November before KTAB is on the air Jackson by the way congratulated Terry who served as station manager for KRBC for 19 years for starting the station While he realizes the loss of the Cowboys will hurt his station in the ratings where it already is a distant second to KRBC he looks on the bright side an awful lot of good sports on he said plan to be showing them" KTXS is operating at less than full power presently because of its tower falling during the winter Jackson promises greater things when he gets his new antenna up and warns: just see how things are in about six months Call me back In the meantime Terry will be busy filling the airwaves with his UHF signal and hoping viewers arc interested enough in his station and the Dallas Cowboys to seek him nut But now that KTAB a CBS affiliate is in town KTXS is shut out of the Cowboys market since that station is an ABC affiliate The thought of having the Dallas Cowboys in his lineup tnakes Terry smile In fact it makes him chuckle even snicker There's more relief than humor in having the Cowboys on his side The fact of the matter is they are going to make his job much easier You see KTAB is coming in as a UHF station Channel 32 Traditionally UHF stations have had a difficult time getting going because people are geared VHF and they think UHF is something attached to their TV that brings in soccer from Brasil or someplace The problem is one of education and identity Terry has to teach the viewers what that other dial on their television set is for then get them to watch it enough to so they realize that if they turn that dial to the proper channel they will see not only the Dallas Cowboys but the entire CBS lineup Bill Terry has one heckuva job ahead of him Like the new kid on the block the aresident and general manager Abl-ene's newest television station KTAB-TV has got an identity problem very few people know who he is and even fewer know where to find him The new kid usually ends up hanging around with someone everybody knows and likes and pretty soon he's one of the crowd The better-known the person he hangs around with the sooner everyone knows him and the higher the regard in which he is held Like that new kid Terry is planning to pal around with the most popular and respected guy in town the Dallas Cowboys and hope the association gets him voted Most Popular at the senior ratings prom For years KTXS has carried the Cowboys locally and for those folks without cable television watching Channel 12 was the only way they could watch the NFL's most popular team I 7.
