th quarter WITH TOM WALLER Is Bancroft The Best? WHO HAS THE best high school baseball team in Kossuth County? The way people have been showing up for Garrigan games and the results of those (15) games made it seem like the Golden Bears were No. 1, until they were routed at Bancroft last Wednesday, 10-0. The Johnnies young team (2 srs. outfielders Greg Welp and Alan Blocker) now looks like the team to beat. THEN THERE ARE comparative scores like the outcome of Emmetsburg's games with Algona, Garrigan and Bancroft. The E-Hawks beat Bancroft 7-6 in nine innings, with the Johnnies 1 . No. 3 pitcher throwing. But both Garrigan (2-0) and Algona(8-7) hold wins over the 10-3 Palo Alto County team. AND IF BANCROFT and Garrigan are the toughest teams in the county, then can Burt and Ledyard be far behind? Bancroft only beat Burt 4-2, and Garrigan only beat Ledyard by one run. Algona High could be a sleeper. The Bulldogs may be playing the toughest schedule of any of the teams mentioned here. - o - WODEN-CRYSTAL Lake has established itself as the girls softball power In this part of the state. Only part of the team made the trip to Emmetsburg... Adult and family night (Wednesdays) is about the only time of the week you won't find a member of the team practicing at the pool. - o - HEAR ABOUT the mother of a Little Leaguer In Montana who attacked the coach because he sent her boy home to get Into his uniform? The coach Is filing a $60,000 suit for assault and battery. - o - STATE REP. Berl Priebe reports that the Iowa Conservation Commission has accepted his invitation to have its mobile wildlife unit appear at the Kossuth county fair August 11-12. It's been here before but rarely, since the various county fairs compete for it. - o - BLEACHER SEATS for $7 a game? That's what it will cost to sit in the newest 1,900 seat addition to Metropolitan Stadium for a Viking games next fall. The Vlkes, unless they continue to win, are pricing themselves out of business. Look at the Twins . . . season ticket sales totaled 4,219 in 1968 and have dropped every year since. And the Twins were down 75)971 from a year ago after the first 30 home games this year.
