28 Friday January 22 1982 WHEELS Fastest Colt in the world hits 125 mph THE LANCER 2000 Turbo is billed as fastest Colt in the and with good reason It is a thrilling flier for the man or woman who wants to drive fast Like most really quick saloons it is based on the works rally car and the development has transformed a conventional four door family saloon into a gutsy charger Priced at £8999 the Lancer Turbo is in great demand for its scorching acceleration (0 to 60 mph in 71 seconds) and top speed of nearly 125 mph Even with such superb performance figures the car manages praiseworthy fuel economy and the driver who uses the neat and light five speed gearbox properly should get 25 to 30 miles per gallon The engine is based on the two litre unit used in the Colt Galant and Sapporo but power output and torque are both increased by more than 50 per cent Colt has uprated the braking system to take account of all the extra power The Turbo has the same system of servo assisted brakes as more modest Lancers but they are larger and venU-lated at the front To aid the handling there are stiffer coil springs and gas filled dampers matched with wider alloy wheels and low profile tyres A deep front air dam has the legend printed back to front so that it reads correctly in the rear view mirror The performance car image is further underlined by a boot lid spoiler dramatic all black paintwork with gold coachline and a pair of Hella Le Mans spotlights FIRM RIDE For a car with a suspension set up for high speed driving and the Colt Turbo is very sure footed in most conditions the ride is remarkably good though naturally on the firm side Around town especially over poorly surfaced roads the ride is less refined than in cars at the price which do not put performance first This car is typical of the breed which has given sports cars such a hard time With four doors and adequate legroom front and rear the Colt Turbo gives the owner the chance to enjoy family motoring as well as a brisk drive Velour trim on the seats is especially pleasing in the winter and the Turbo comes equipped with a good sized glove box storage shelf below it map pockets in the front doors a fascia shelf and trays for parking coins A radio is standard With its startling performance and high level of finish the Colt Lancer Turbo gives Japan a car which competes with European sporting saloons and hatchbacks such as the BMW 323i Ford Capri 28 Injection and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus although it is more expensive than all three THE CR6 which is to replace familiar black cab the FX4 The enthusiastic small army of instructors gives freely and unstintingly to training learner motorcyclists and ultimately to road safety vtsa Vauxhall OPEL FOR THE BEST DEAL HARTMAN 124 KING Si HAMMERSMITH LONDON 6 Tel 01748 0821 for MAIN DEALER CB Centre behind the Showroom at 133 Old Brompton Rd South Kensington SW7 Tel 373 3333 the Training Scheme was forced to be run on a strictly commercial basis and these instructors had to be paid for their services the wage bill alone would amount to over £4 million a year Lex Brooklands Albemarle St Albemarle Street W1 01-4930321 National Training Scheme was operated by about 7000 instructors from over 350 centres throughout the country and each instructor voluntarily gave about 90 hours a year mainly at weekends Earl Howe added that with the introduction of the new two part test for motor cycles planned to start in a few months the Scheme was being asked to undertake Part One of the test and to continue and to expand training facilities do this would require greatly increased expenditure and we have asked the Government and the motor cycle industry to provide the necessary finance But in any event the instructors will remain the backbone of the Scheme without them the training could not Earl Howe said Mr extremely valuable road safety activities were helping learner motorcyclists to become skilful riders and encouraging them to obtain the expert tuition which was available at the RAC ACU training centres He was well known for his demonstrations of riding skill and had visited hundreds of schools to lecture thousands of children He had also pioneered the development of Trail Parks to attract motor -cyclists to acquire initial riding experience off the road in adventurous and safe conditions under expert supervision The Torrens Trophy is given in memory of the late Arthur Bourne a former Chairman of the RAC Motor Cycle Committee and an eminent motor cycling journalist who wrote under the name of 'Torrens' It is awarded annually by the RAC to organisations or individuals having made a major contribution to the cause of safe and skilful motor cycling greatly increased financial assistance could be obtained from the Government and the motor cycle industry this would obviously require increased fees being charged for training a move which would undoubtedly deter many learners from joining the Scheme and therefore defeat the object of the Fees at present are usually between £12 and £25 for a complete training course but training on a strict commercial basis would probably require such fees to be raised to a level of between £40 and £75 and considerably higher if financial and other help from the Government and local authorities should cease to be available in the years
