orchestra to Vanderburgh Auditorium's Gold Room fora traditional Big Band dance beginning at I pm Dec 15 Basie's appearance is sponsored by the Vanderburgh County Democratic Central Committee Tickets for the fundraiser are 525 per couple The Count Basie Orchestra developed from the Bennie Moten Orchestra after Moten died Then in 1935 Kansas City was home base Since that lime the orchestra was featured in Mel Brooks' raucous did an historic two-week engagement at Caesar's Place in Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald Tickets may be purchased at Democratic Headquarters 227 Court St Evansville and at Records Tapes and Tickets at Washington Square CEfeCIXC Randolph Feldman's script is a fair reflection of college kids as it shows their trumped-up sexual prowess their dependence on "party" pharmaceuticals and their uncertain social ties is bow I'm going to develop wonderful relationships that will last a lifetime?" one pledge mimics his father a former fratster as he battles the unknowns of Garth Linda Blair and Vincent Van Patten are the two stars of "Hell Ms Blair "Exorcist" child-star is adequate as a sensible old-fashioned middle-class girt Van Patten is a witty oversexed hooligan with hopes of wild parties and wilder women Predictably the four pledges pair off: Blair with Donny Osmond look-alike Peter Barton as a rich kid with second thoughts about Greek life and Van Patten with a drunkstoned British import student played teasingly by Suki Goodwin As the conniving frat president Kevin Brophy is appropriately devious and egotistical "Hell Night" rises from Compass International Pictures an obscure film production company which is clearly smart enough to hire a good shooter It's rated for violence and some sexy shenanigans and continues at Carrels Twin Cinemas 'Anastasia' continues The Repertory People of Evansville's production of "Anastasia" will continue this Friday Saturday and Sunday at 8:15 pm Saturday's Dinner Theater begins at 7 pm with a Russian buffet The play concerns a woman who claims to be Anastasia the surviving daughter of Czar Nicholas II who was killed during the Russian revolution For tickets call the RPE box office at Resurrecting the age-old "spend a night in a haunted mansion1 routine "Hell Night" is a cut (excuse pun) above the rampant parade of youth-oriented bloody chillers Besides its expected motifs of violence-breeds-violence demented-killers-on-the-loose and pranksten-get-theirs Night" offers a few distinct differences: At times it is genuinely unpredictable frightening in the old-fashioned nail-biting tradition It also is richly photographed provides occasional spurts of good-natured humor and emphasizes suspense over violence going refreshingly lightly on the gore "Hell Night" is no "American Werewolf in London" a broadly funny and very scary spoof on the gore genre For that matter it barely approaches the shocker that started it all But "Hell Night" is at least penned with a moderate dose of intelligence and despite a few confusing plot twists it generally makes sense Unlike the recent flood of bloody flicks depicting gruesome terrors Night" makes little use of subjective camera techniques when the viewer sees the action from the murderer's point of view Instead "Hell Night" reverts to classic directorial approaches to suspense: the camera is the all-seeing observer victims' perspective is occasionally shown That method alone is praiseworthy Also "Hell Night" is populated primarily with young people providing a consistency and a sure-fire strategy to capture its teen audiences Several very brief scenes involving older folks show them as useless dolts or suspicious parent-types strengthening the for-kids-only premise As expected involves a fraternity-sorority initiation gone awry Near the stroke of midnight (natch) a wild "Greek" party moves from campus to the estate of one Garth Mansion At the insistence of their leaders AM) four pledges to a fraternity and its sister sorority are forced to spend the rest of the night at the spooky Gothic home fabled as the site of a multiple murder-suicide To ensure a ordeal the frat chief sorority president and a whiz-kid helper plan an elaborate series id frights via taped screams ghostly apparitions creaking doors and such Offering a deadly counterpoint to the phony horror two monsters (actually two deformed humans who survived the legendary family murders in the mansion) knock off the three pranksters and then go after the four pledges in the death-countdown format of most recent horror movies Though the gore is minimal and there's no nudity Night" should capture even young moviegoers' imaginations with its strong steady suspense and scare gimmickry Director Tom DeSimone handles his subject matter well though he indulges in occasional fits of padding on the way to each fright Cinematographer Mac Ahlberg makes effective use of the mansion its darkened recesses and bewildering garden maze At least a dozen shots are truly marvelous For example a frightened frat pledge hesitantly explores the Garth garden with pitchfork clenched in his fiats Ahlberg shows a dark corner which gradually reveals the pitchfork's sharp prongs then the instrument then a petrified face creeping into the moonlight A Spiced Odyssey WASHINGTON CINEMA VV WmhwMjkvi 474 4176 SAI I SUN MAltNIt Kjj eircxan
