First They are purely vegetable, in fact a medicated food. Second The same dose alwags produce the same effect other purgatives require increased doses and finally cease acting.

Third They pur'fy the blood. Fourth They invigorate the digestion and cleanse the stotnache and bowels. Fifth They stimulate the liver and carry off vitiated bile and other deprov ed secretions. The first two or three doses tell the story. The skin becomes clear, the eye bright, the mind active, digestion is restored, cobtiveness cured, the animal vigor is recruited and all delay arrested.

Brandreth's Pills are sold in every drug and medicine store, either plain or sugar coated. "The swell of summer's -the Doctors? Pshaw! Circulars of tbe most infamous char acter and couched in the most abusive and libelous language have been circu lated throughout the county by Abraham Charles over the signatures of his associate traitors, David Stoner, Henry Birnstock and R.

W. Drenning. This circular and others of like character are the only publications of an abusive and scurrilous character that have yet ap peared in this campaign, one which it was hoped to be conducted on a higher plane; one in which dispassionate argument and dignified appeal to the sense and honest conviction of voters, it was expected, would displace the villification and abuse of candidates so patent in previous campaigns. The Democratic candidate for Sheriff, Major John D. Gallatin, has conducted a dignified and gentlemanly campaign all through.

He has been courteous in his treatment of his opponents, and has shown in marked contrast by his behavior, that he is a superior man in every sense to either of his opponents, both of whom have been so malignant and bitter towards him, personally and politically. The voters of York county will be slow to believe or be influenced by the blackguardism which has emanated front Abraham Charles' trainers and bottle holders. Far better results might have been obtained by the Charles small minority in conducting a more de cent campaign than the one made so conspicuously nasty and indecent by these would-be reformers. Mr. Charles has resorted for years to every known artifice in politics to se cure tbe nomination for Sheriff, and he was ready to sacrifice the boasted manhood of which bis heelers and peel ers so lustily boast of his possessing, to any ring or men who would secure for him the coveted nomination and to grab which he moved into York county from Republican Lancaster.

Mr. Charles never made any respectable showing in our County Conventions and the few delegates he had in the last were many more than he ever before mas tered. He would have had as good a reason to have kicked years ago as he has to-day and he would have done so, had he received the least encouragement ti do so. An untruthful man is an unreliable man and is not to be trusted either in the business walks of life or in the pub lic service. Let us see how Mr.

Charles' veracity will bear the test. He submitted hia claimn in a card of an nouncement in all the Democratic news- lupers of the county, in which he made the solemn declaration that he would abide by the decision of tbe Democratic County Convention. Such a declara tion any honorable man would hold sacred and be bound by, and would not repudiate unless, he was defrauded out of hia nomination by the most flagrant political jugglery. There waa no trickery in this conven tion. It was as fair and honest a political conference as was ever held.

The representatives of the people the dele gates nominated the ticket unpur chased and unbossed, and Mr. Charles caenot honestly complain of fraud or corruption. To do so is an insult to the manhood and character of every dele gate who voted for Gallatin. Mr. Charles was accorde all the votes he had, in the convention, and the cor pe nil's guard he paraded there never came in eight of the nomination for sheriff, much less expecting to' secure it.

There were other candidates in the convention with claims as strong as Mr, Charles' and with more than double the number of delegates he had, who would have had much greater reason to be dis satisfied with their dofeat, but who regard ed their word of honor too much not to be governed by the con vention's verdict and bowed sub missive to its decree. Where are these men found in this conflict? aiding and abetting Mr. Charles and his small coterie of kickers and traitors against the Democratic organization in this county? No, emphatically no! bat they are to be found in the thickest of the fight, bending every energy to rally their friends to the support of John Gallatin, and for the election of the Democratic ticket from top to bottom, These are true Democrats and hon orable gentlemen, who regard their word of honor in politics as well as in ordi nary business transactions. There is no such defection in the ranks as Mr. Charles and hia contingent of malcontents would have the public believe.

He cannot and will not muster a thousand votes, and the votes he will receive outside of a few immediate friends, will be purchased in the inter est of Republican success in electing sheriff through the inspiring influences of Fount's distillery. What do the church going people whom Mr. Charles' friends appeal to in their crusade of abune against John D. Gallatin, think of the influence ot the distillery in politics, The retail saloon influence in political campaigns has been condemned year after year in the cities, and its corrupt ing abuses proclaimed with wonderful effect. But what is the abuse of tb retail saloon in York county, as com pared with a whole distillery, when barrel after barrel of whiskey can be put up into gallon packages and sent out as persuaders for the voter.

The private and personal character of John D. Gallatin is as good as that of either of his opponents and he is not an intemperate man. He doea not use intoxicating liquors to excess and i.s as temperate as either of his opponents. He is a man possessed of great kindness of heart and no man in the county is more charitably disposed and we believe there is not one man of his means in the county who gives as freely to the poor. He has helped many out of trouble by rendering them financial assistance at times when a Bmall amount of money prevented their ruin.

Neither was his charity dispensed for political effect, for he has as readily helped and assisted unfortunate Republicans as Democrats. The fair minded voters of York county will not be influenced by the lying circulars spread broadcast over the county, teeming with blackguardism and abuse of an honest, kind-hearted man, whose dailv life is marked by some act THE YORK DAILY. The sentiment in favor of improving country roads i growing every year.

It hM reached our legislative assemblies, and bills are being introduced in order to necure State aid in the matter. Good road are things which, no class of persons would appreciate more than physicians, and to none would they bring more direct personal comfort, and even practical financial help. On a good read the country doctors can travel ten miles an a bad one barely five. The time required in doing his work physical weariness is increased, the amount of visiting rendered possible is curtailed Besides thU, the patient suffers, for the doctor's visits are delayed andkss numerous. lie cannot watch the patient no cloaelv, and he brings to his work wearied body.

Perhaps the horse would argue most eloquently of. all if he could speak in favor of good roada. HU working li'e lengthened and hia working life made easier. With good roads'the bicycle could be utilized, and through its invigorating influence, perhaps, the country doctor would eeaM.aa years rolled on. to become obese from to much sitting in awajon.Lls wits would be sharper, his professional work better.

By all means, then, let the doctors take up the gospel of good roads and urge forward their construction. They make Intercourse more easy, work less burdensome, lile4 more enjoyable; and they are, in fine, an index of the pro-gressiveness and civilization of a com munity Record. One of the most absurd methods made use of to elect Mr. Charles is the use of the columns of the Columbia Spy, of Lancaster county, which paper is whooping it up in every issue and arrogantly telling York county voters who to elect for Sheriff. Our voters don't want any interference from across the river; it is quite enough that they have sent us Mr. Charles as a candidate without further dictation. No Democrat should cut his ticket.

There is danger in this election of spoiling the whole ticket by marks outside of the regular column, which might result in throwing out the whole ticket. Judge Metzger, of Lycoming county, says on the subject very truthfully "The only danger to Demo crats in Lycoming county in split ting or cutting any part of the county ticket is that they might make a mistake and thus have the whole ticket thrown out. The Judge has a level head on him. The election for President in Pennsylvania will be close, every vote will count, and Lycoming county Democrats should run no rifck of losing their votes for President by cutting any part of the ticket. Vote it stiaight just as the Republican leaders are telling Re publicans to do." To encourage the Charles revolt against Gallatin, the regular nominee, is to precipitate a repetition of tbe same revolt against any candidate that may hereafter be nominated in a Democratic County Convention.

'Prospective can didates and their friends should use every endeavor to prevent the cutting of any part of the regular ticket in their respective districts if they wonld insure a united party and prevent a repetition of the same trouble in future years. The county is full of prospective candidates, in fact every election district swarms with them, none of whom, if they are nominated, wonld like to be opposed with independ ent candidates. Each of these candi dates have sufficient influence in their districts to overcome any opposition manifesting itself, and they should exert that influence at once, if they would save themselves from similar antagonism. It should be the pride of every Democrat to preserve the party organization, for in its preservation only is continued success assured. Eyesight Saved After Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria.
