HOMMMWWMMMNHMMMMMHMHII Stopping Water Pollution Can Begin in the Home What can individuals, concerned about water pollution, do to prevent,it? Some water pollution is caused by the phosphates hi detergents. These phosphates act as a fertilizer to encourage the- dangerous growth of algae in pur waterways. The growth causes fish to die and turns lakes into odorous swamps. There are at least three ways people can help to reduce the polluting phosphates that pour into our waterways annually. 1. Use .low-phosphate detergents. 2. Follow manufacturers' Instructions—exactly. It has been estimated that if eVery- . one would carefully measure detergent, accordlngto the direction's on the con-. • talner, and use no more than the amount recommended, water pollution due to phosphates would be reduced one third. 3. Instead of detergent, , use phosphate-free soap. Many commercial laundries believe that soap does a better cleaning job and at lower cost than detergents. To be effective, /however, it must be used with truly soft Water. : Municipally softened water isn't soft enough. It is usually WHEN WATER DOESN'T TAStE AS good as it might a water purifier may be the answer. The purifier removes pollutants, improves palatabHIty-and the resultant dost is less than that of regularly buying bottled Water. Photo, Culliuan International. . : •''•'.• seven or eight- grains hard. Recommended for use with soap is water of terp hftrd- ness; like- that produced by a water-Softening appliance. Increased pollution of water sources, followed by the increased use of purifying chemicals, has reduced the palatabiiity of "some ;Wate'r supplies. If water doesn't taste as good as it might, it can be improved by installing a filter' or water purifier on the cold water line. A filter can remove unwanted pollutants including chlorine. 'All pollution , isn't manmade, Nature adds 'many pollutants to water—silt; dirt, iron, sulphur, acidity. . Water conditioning equipment can effectively remove any or all of these materials from water, and .filter the water to greater clarity at the same time. Washing 45,000 Dishes Is Easy Job for Modern Dishwashers Garbage Is Always a Problem, But Handy Disposer Solves It Kowuth County Advartce - 5 Monday, May 24, , Another kitchen addition likely to be welcome is a food Waste disposer. A recent survey asked the question, "Are garbage disposal problems more severe in summer Or in Winter?" Almost unanimously, the homemakers' queried agreed that garbage is a year-long problem, reports the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau. Proper disposal of food wastes is a matter of special importance, due to the present concern about pollution The electric food waste disposer provides a real solution. It .handled all food waste, arid tak^s surprisingly little water and electricity to operate. This appliance is installed beneath , the kitchen Sink, connected t6 the waste line. It operates at the flick of ah electric wall switch, and food goes down the drain in a stream of cold water. After all, it can cut the time spent doing dishes by at least one half., That's quite a saving, since the average 'family of four uses about 45,000 dishes, pots, pans, in a year. .Today's dishwashers really do a job. Pre-rinsirig is all but eliminated. Some models have filtering devices that remove food particles after the wash, cycle, so they can't be redeposited • during rinsing. Others liquefy particles and flush them away. ' •' v • Good news is that reduced prices go along with improved performance.
