Bryarli's Start. TIERMAN MELVILLE. Will lecture to-night at Fowler' Hall. Turn out, and give him a toarty greeting. A few evenings ago' we went to tbe Methodist Church, there would be preaching, having heard the bell ring, at the usual hour for church services.

We went into the basement where we saw lights and, on entering took a seat and prepared oursclf for listening to a sermon from a very fine looking and elegant young gentleman, who was standing in the altar. But instead of a sermon wo heard a most edifying lecture on the subject of "Vocal Musio." The principles of thescienco were so clearly explained and happily illustrated that even tec the most Unmusical genius in the whole, town understood and appreciated all that ws said. But somo of onr readers want to know what all this has to do with novelty -with which captivating word we have headed this article. We will satisfy their curiosity when we tell them, that after listening to this lectureof Mr.M'Intosh,we found ourself singing, and never having done the like on any former occasion, we considered it such a great nortlty, we couldn't help writing an article about it. Mcintosh is certainly the best teacher of music we ever knew, and as an evidence of the fact, ho has in a course of six lessons taught a class to sing plain musio at sight and this we consider 'the best evidenoe of his competency to taach the science.

His class consists principally of boys and girls and it is astonishing to see with what ease and accuracy the smallest children in the class read and sing the notes of any plain pieceof music. In twelve lessons Mr. Mcintosh proposes to teach his class to read any kind of music, and from what we have oen we have no doubt he will succeed. He is now forming a new class and his terms are so moderate every body can Afford to attend the courso, aud what is equally to the point every body can learn -toeing. If "bo can teach cuiiJieu.

and such "locals" as oursclf, wo know ho can teach all the "rest of mankind." Wo hope to hco him have a largo class. Macormac has returned to the city, and is prepared to furnish thoso magnificent rhologrnph Pictures that have given him the very enviable position of a No. 1, artist in this community. Mac. can't be beat those who doubt our assestion can put the matter to the test, by sitting for Pictures.

Same old stand, west side Public Square. Pictures in every style known to the art, taken at short notice. Miss Mary Beaumont will commence a echool, on tho 1st of February, in the eiouse near tho Presbyterian Church formerly occupied by Mrs. Gould. Miss B.

is well qualified to impart instruction, and we hope she may be patronized in a manner commeaaurato with her merits. For terms see advertisement. We understand the Litcray Association have invited Geu. Win. T.

Haskell, who is now in Nashville, to deliver them a number of lectures. They havj not yet had time to receive an answer, but we trust the next mail will bring his acceptance, lie lectured the other dny in Nafhvillo and we are told much of the glorious eloquence of his best days gleamed in ninny a pass-ago of 8urp.is.sing beauty. Should ho come we predict he will be greeted with more than tho enthusiasm of former wel-couios. 1 S. Since- the above was put in type we have received an answer from Gen.

Haskell, stating that ho will lecturo here to-morrow night subject, "Tho distinguished men and women of Tennessco and Kentucky, and a parallel between Clay, Calhoun and Webster." Going suddenly into the apartment of our young friend W. O. Vance, tho other day, wo found him looking with a moody brow at an old knife; out of which bo had just finished grinding tho gaps as wo en-tarod. On our question, as to tho meaning of his portentous frown, ho referred us to tho concluding intimation of his circular, and said "as how they had'nt molted." By diut of entreaty we induced him to postpono his tragic exit a little longer until wo should speuk a word in his behalf, and rw wo pray you one and all that owe him, go ye and give unto hint, whcrwithal "that gladens the heart of man" AlL who dosi; fresh fih, tf Mipcrior quality, can be supplied at cheap rates by ealling ou Mr. Wesley Lsnraton, at his Fish Depot, near tho Market house.

He intend keeping a supply on hnnd during the season worrited sound and frosh. Miss Fanny Miller will open a Music School at the rciidcuce of her Father, on the corner of Fourth and Mti Ft on the 1st of Vrbrnary Amoitqst the xnanyyaamsrwont withl attiinli inr Inter, lias Iwuiti file th) nest I few days, the Australian Bear shdw stands prominent Accompanied by an Organ which "discoursed aweet music" all the day, and "vexed the drowsy ear of it took in all the lovera of melody. We understand, however, there were some in its vicinity, so "fit for treason, stratagems and spoils," as to threaten an indictment of the delicious grinding, as a nuisance. They were intimidated however from such an exhibition of malignity by the denizens of "Foverty Row," whose delicate ears were completely entranced by the bewitching harmony. So great was their enthusiasm for the musio And tho they difficulty be kept in atten dance Court, which was then in session.

Their admiration of tho "Bar's" sagacity was so intense, that they spoke openly of deposing Judge Pepper and placing Bruin upon the bench. This idea at first sight seems unworthy of so enlightened a body, but if we reflect upon the various advantages he would possess over our present able expounder of the law it Is not undeserving of consideration. This exchange would abolish all fines for contempt of court, for who could feel anything but awe in tbe prcsenco of so, formidable a Judge. Should any legal gentleman forget for a moment, his honor's dignity, ho would bo recalled to his senses by one of Judge Bruin's gentle slspl As a criminal Jndgo it would be a- mos salutary appointment, provided the office of exeoutioner could be combined with that of Sentencer. In that case tho Judges charges might bo a little sanguinary, but we think in these times, when crime boasts its immunity from the law it would produce a benificial effect.

Altogether the suggestion reflects credit upon the gentlemen of the gown. A few of our citizens had the pleasure of listening to the "table talk" of Mr. Maddox, late of the London and Dublin theatre" on monday night. We had not the luck to be present, but we learn from the fortunate owners of a half, that it was well spent inasmuch as it convinced them of their need of culture to appreciate, the unearth.li) eloquence of Mr. Maddox's "table talk." Coleridge and Hazlctt and Rogers "table talk" was given to the world after their tongues were long still, but it is reserved for Mr.

Maddox to civo his to rapt audiences, as they tolled fresh from that wonderful organ. But unluckily Mr. Maddox's "table" had scarcly began speaking ere the cry of "spirits" vm raised, which, ctruck such terror into the timid hearts of the ladies, thny loft preci pitately, when the "masculines catching the panic, also betook themselves to craven flight, in such numbers, that only the tout hearted manager was loft to hear tho "table talk." He bore it but a moment however, and with a check blanched with terror, and hair standing "like quills upon the fretful porcupine," he rushed down the steps, after telling Mr. Maddox between his chattering teeth "to bring him the key when he got through." Our readers will bo much gratified to learn that tho Literary Association have again heard from Jno. G.

Saxe in a letter, which announces, that he will visit Clarks- ville about tho 10th of March. He writes that ho has an engagement in St. Louis, about the 1st of March and in New Orleans about the 15th of the same month, and in passing he will fill his appointment with us. He will deliver us three lectures, as lollows. "Yankee Land," "Poetry and Poets," and "The Money King." IIf.v.

J. F. Hughes and Rev. S. D.

All the other Freu Bunks have made good tho additional call of 10 per cent and now have 20 per cent of Bonds on deposit above circulation, which makes the notes of all the Banks that have deposited State stock, good beyond a doubt. And the Legislature should see that tho Banks that have deposited endorsed bonds iuako an additional deposit at once. The next session of Mr. F. Harris. We no less felici tate the Governor, upon happiness of his selection, than wi congratulate onr State, upon tho acquisition of so much beauty, bravery, and Military genius, to its war department. Thoso who have seen Col. Faxon will at onee recognize his personal claims' to the appointment, but only those, acquainted with his history, can appreciate his'peeuliar fitness" for the office. Many an editorial conflict, attest hi indomitable and unflinching valor.

Some are still living who remember with pride his. daring onslaught upon the Ghost of Brbwnlow. "fis but an ordinary courage that stands a puny, mortal's wrath, to that sublime intrepidity that faces the sheeted apparitions of the grave. In the quality of Beauty no language can do justice to to tho Col's noble features and commanding form. With a brow, "the dome of in tellect" an eye that flashes command, a nose of the boldest sinuosity, a mouth and chin of Napoleonic firmness and a "port like Mars" he presents the beau ideal of a great military hero, such as fancy delights to picture, Alexander, and Hanniabl in and Caesar, thoso great captains of tho Past.

Col. Faxon's genius for military affairs has been sufficiently evinced by his able discussion of tho "Pillow case," in whjah his intuition of tho rules of War, would have led a stranger to suppose he had been born "in complete steel" and bred "upon tho tented field." We called upon the Colonel soon after the news of his appointment, and found him with a soldier's love of "potations," indulging in "Vintage of Corn." With commanding wave, he" invited us to a seat. His formidable feau-turcs, were already schooled, to the iron cast of the Veteran's physiognomys but as he advanced midway to the, contents. of his "canteen," his countenanco relaxed, and we breathed freer. "Among other remarks he hoped that his high preferment would excite no feelings of- envy in our bosom; and on our assuring him to the contrary, he went on to speak feelingly of that disposition of mankind, to look coldly upon those who had been elevated above them and in this connection he recited, with thrilling effect those inisanthrophio lines of "Childo Harold: He who, mountain tops ascends shall find'f Thslof.it at peaks most wrapped iu clond and snow Though hiph above the situ of Glory glow, And far beneuth are earth nod ocean spread, Yet round him (hie) aie Icy rocks and cloudly blow Conlen ling tempests on his nuked head; And thus reward the toils that to those summits led He sank down, shivering in the cold at mosphere of his sublime elevation, and we felt he was too fur above us to administer comfort.

Wo left him murmerinr, snatches of warlike odes, of which wo could distinguish "We buried him (hie) deeply at dead (hie) of night," and then again "The snow shall be their winding (hie) sheet," and ere we got out of hearing we fancied we caught the stciring notes of tho Marsellaise byinu.
