The CouKiKit in-ilers Tluirmun to Tilden. Tho would regard Senator Tliiiniiim with nn much favor as any other democrat in the union, Mr. Tilden not excepted, if it can he established that liia claims for election are greater than theee of Tilden.

Then we would prefer him as the nominee, lleally we liavo no, choice ainon half a dozen lustrous names. AVo arc for tho one who can command most strength. Indeed, the South lias, very little business in expressing any choice. Only let us cast the vote of the South for the one MrongcGt among the Northern htateu. We inny be mistaken in (supposing Mr.

Tilden tiic most nvailuble. Yet wo Lelieve Wat-terson only partially right in tho assertion that tho campaign will turn largely on the question of reform. Jf he had included tho cur- rency question he would have been nearer the murk. The North ill not ignore the ijuet-ticn of specie resumption, nor will they bo indifferent upon tho volume of the currency. Without the Middle and New KnglHiid States we cannot succeed.

To win them, we think tho nomination of Tilden about the most sensible thing to bo JIo has adminibtrativo ability of a high order, is not by any means a novice, and has always been Jef-fersonian Democrat. A few days before the close of the session a bill was before the Legislature to appropriate $400 for replacing a broken hand on that same fctatue. This writer opposed it upon the ground that it is a waste of money to repair it until it bliall have been placed within the capitol for protection. I do siueeicly hope tho purpose of tlie Council will coiuu to nought.

If sue-ccbsI'uI it will give tlie future prosperl- ui uut iowu a stau irom wlilcu It will never recover. I concede to the members of the Council light to their opinions uud juduuient concern ing thU matter, They will, 1 know, allow me mine. I have heard tho plea ol nccctiiiii oIK-red for a sale of ibis ground. jNo tfucli necessity exists. lliero is Jt a memler of the Council.

nor siuglo man in town, who owns real iBlalo, (town lota), who would thiuk of offering them at this time ut puOlio sule, whettier he favors the proposed sale or whether he is against it. It would ho folly, and ruinous. Wiiv then olier this public property for bale? This plea of necessity must over-ride everything- Tuxes laxca is neiti up as a seare-crow to frighten people into consenting to and approving tho action of the council. ino iieauty of tlie town must hit sacrificed tho health of the town permanently ami hopelessly endangered, if not ruiuotl tlie comfort ofiho mothers and liilio children aud the inxalitl, wlio are unable to fur away from their hwmes, is to bo sae- rinceu uie pleasant retreat for the stranger, eojouriiing for a day or two iu our miusi, inusi Do lostsiglit of, and all for a little money. OU, lor shume.

Will an enlightened people, for the fear of having their taxes a litile in-creased, sacrifice the beauty of tho town, the health of the town, the pleasure of the poor, the sick, the children, and the strunger? I do hope and trust Hint wo have not come to that extremity. Our furture prosperity, our future health, which deT pend so much upon the beauty and cleunliuesH of the town, present strong reasons, in my judgement, why the Council slould stay their hands. A few years hence, should our town grow, the very ones who uie now aiding aud abetting this action of the council will, Willi all the balance of the town, curse you for it, Jf I had money enough to make tho purchase, ami could spare it from the support of my wife and children, I Would freely give it to save this piece of ground to this community an a tduco of public resort. Ko one individual in our time is uhle to do it. The community as a whole are able to preserve it, and will one day, and that not far oil', be compelled to lament over their folly if they do not rise up and nay now now which they most prefer Hionri or hc.ulth.

I prefer, most for in) self and family and my neighbor, the latter. I therefore, in iiHtue of the poor of the town, the sick, iu future beauty and pronpt-rity, it health, enter my oiotesl against the proposeil action of the Couucll ou tho lOlli of thu mouth. I'. L. YOKK.
