Southwest Conference title favorites broke the stubborn heart of a valiant Hardin Simmons football team in the fourth period here tonight to roll up a 40-0 victory 1 before 15000 wildly cheering fans After practically giving the Owls two touchdowns early In the opening quarter the Cowboys fought on even terms until a blocked punt by All American candidate Richard Chapman and a follow up recovery in the end zone by Blois pridges plunged the knife into the heart of the Pokes and set up the lapdsllde Rice ue-lory After this touchdown the Cowboys could never get started again Collins Stars Fullback Collins was the man of the hour for the losing 'Hardin Simmons eleven blast- Ing the mighty Rice line to shreds for 99 yards in 22 carries to shine Kosse Johnson Rice's South- we Conference leading ground gainer Johnson racked up 92 yards The fireworks started the second time Rice got the ball Cagle booted a beautiful 56-yard-er that was returned by Dickie Moegle to the Poke 48 On the first play Moegle ram- med tackle for two and then Leroy Fenstemaker passed to End Dan Hart over the head of Poke de- fender Chester Lyssy fof 39 yards -to the 7 Right half Mack Taylor of Lubbock plunged to the 1 on the first play and Fenstemaker plowed over on a quarterback sneak for the touchdown boot was perfect to give the Owls a 7-0 lead with 9:10 left in the period The first of two later another six points lth a running pass Gaskamp's not was wide with 10:19 left Another brilliant piece of Rice efense this a pass Interception by Gordon Kellog paved the way for the fifth touchdown Kellog returned the interception from the Owl 15 to the H-SU 33 and in Just three plays the damage was done Lamesa'a Marshall Crawford snagged a pass from John Nlsbet for 11 to put the ball on the 17 and then arter a penalty was on the receiving end of the payoff pitch The try from placement was no good and the score was 33-4 with 4:33 left In the game On the first play from scrimmage after the score Owens was hit hard by Crawford after a four yard gain and fumbled Nis-bet recovering for Rice on the H-SU 32 This time however the Cowboys held strong and took over on their own 19 A College Wildcats maintained Texas' colorful football reputation hero tonight by displaying a raz-sle dazzle attack to down the Florida State Seminole 287 In an totcraecttonal battle before 1L-815 grid fans Coach Garvin Beauchamp' Wildcats ipotted the favored Floridans an early touchdown In the opening quarter but roared back for touchdowns In each of the three remaining periods while holding their host! scoreless After having their backs to the wall by finding themselves seven points behind with the game less than 10 minutes old the Wildcats displayed plenty of grit and determination In
