Press. Nw York, Feb. 2. DearFik: A question which has troubled my mind for a time I take liberty to lay before yon, and beg yon very much not to refuse to answer me, if it is only in tbe shortest possible way. I am earning a fair living as a carpenter, and tnpport my family of wife and four children well, hnt can not save anything.

In caee of my death my family would be withoat a dol lar, perhaps, and I have often thought of taking out a policy in some good life insurance company. Bat my churoh, the Lutheran, objects to life insurance, as well as to secret societies, aod oar pastor told me that by insuring my life I would lose my membership in the church. I would not like this ou account of my children. My pastor says God forbids anyone to sell his body, and if anything would happen to me God wonld take care of my family. My belief is that God don't help those that don't try to help themselves.

I would like for yon to give me advice in this mat- This is a good and useful letr and interprets what I meant in asking folk to send me questions-not puzzlers abont who Cain's wife waa, nor abont the flcod and the ark, nor abont the origin of etil, etc, bat qnestions springing oat of real experience) in praotical life. What is life insurance It Is an investment made when one is in good health, by small anneal instalments, payable at one' death to hia heir. It ia a form cf laying np money. It is not in any obnoxions sense gambling or betting. It is Investing when yea are prosperous a small capital fcr your wife or children when yon are gore.

Of course, there are different kinds of In-inrence policies and insurance companies, and of very different degrees cf excellence. What a poor man should require is a nonforfeitable policy i. a policy which, if he be not able to continne annnal pay-meets, shall not forfeit his premiums, paid together with the whole sum insured, bat which secures to him a part cr proportion of bis insurance, determined by the amount of money paid in. To pay $25 a year tor ten years, aod not only to lose that but tbe whole sum for which one ia insured is a great injustice. But oar best com pan if iaaae non-forfeitable policies, and only such companies should be chosen by men of moderate mean.

It is not out purpose to open tbe theory of lite insnraoce. We say that wben a man insures his life in an honest company bo is laying np money for his family or heir. If every on was so aituated that be oonld invest beyond the reb.6(?mi8!ortuoe a small sum every year, be wisatAbe layicg np jast th same, only he would hi tt, care of it him-aeif and would be likelreateot it or in vest it at great risks, or be ioifrrwre7! nr bankruptcy, or aicknesa, or fickleness, whereas an insurance company looks after the investment and, for a small interest, takes care ot the accumulating deposits of poor men. Life insnraoce is founded npon scientiuc principles. There is a reasonable frprcta-fio, founded npon long observation, that at any given age a ma will live to a certain given age, and the length of life to be expected Increases with one's age np to a certain point.

One's expectation in early life is sot so great as at mid-life, i.e., nature says to a man who is healthy and sound at 40. Yon have obeyed the laws ot health aod morality forty years and vonr reasonable expectation of lite is greatly extended. There is solniron. unobserved by men, a penalty for wlatmg the laws of heaithi by curtailing tbe prospect ot long life, acd, on the other band, there is a icnnmer- ative laying up from year to year, for wise aod virtaons living, la the extension of the probability of long iite. A wise life insurance of or $10,000, payable at the death of the insurer, does not benefit his wife aud children only after his death, bat it is of great use to the man himself.

It tends to make him economl cal, methodioal and frugal in his expendl tnres, cuts off many petty indulgences which woald waste his means, and ives quiet to his mind in business troubles and especially In sickness aod ia prospect of death. lie doe cot look in anguish at the prospect of his family at bis death leaden with the expeuies of his sokness, funeral expenses, and thrown upon the world without means of livelihood at a time when grief will go far to paralyse their ener gies. Life insurance is not only not wrong, but is a duty. No one has any right to leave those who are dependent npon his love and care to the chances of ludaetrial paralysis aud poverty. There is a superstition on tbe part of many women, who annuaer at caring tneir husbands' lives insured, as if it would bring ou death sooner.

This absurd fear belongs to the superstition about Fridays, if Providence took care of only six days in the week aod Friday to ill luck or tha devil 1 God takes care of ooe day as much as another and to all days alike. And God takes care of wise foresight, for sake of fulfilling tbe duties of lore and humanity to one's heirs. Our correspondent represents his pastor aa saying "God forbids any one to sell his body." Where docs God forbid itT Let him point to his authority. It certainly can not be found in the Bible, aod evun if it could, what has it to do with lite insar ancet Insurance companies have no nss for men's bodies, nor is it their interest to have men die. On the other hand, it is to their interest that men should live as long as possible and pay thoir annual dues, Those who ar likely to die soon are re Jecfced upon preliminary examination, and tii at cA.npsn.t sutiitr 1.1DKII WAV.
