candidacy fcr renomination received a staggering and possibly fatal blow to day when Kllhu Root was elected chair man of the Republican national conven tion by the narrow plurality of 18 votes Governor McGovern of Wis consin who was put forward by the pro gressive forces It is not often that victory spells de feat but that is exactly what appears to have happened in tins instance It is true that Senator Root candidate of the reactionary element won chairman ship by the closest kind of a close shave but his election was brought about under circumstances which seem to sound the death knell of President hopes No thoughtful person can analyze the loll call on the temporary chairmanship without reaching the inevitable con clysion that it foreshadows the elimina tion of William Howard Taft from the presidency and from public life MAJORITY WILL MELT This is because it was on the tem porary chairmanship roll call that his fortunes reached their highest tide Nec essarily the vote for President Taft will be less than the vote for Senator Root for the reason that Root received the votes of a number of delegates from states which have instructed for Roose velt in state primaries and who can not vote for Taft or example Illinois a Roosevelt gave Root seven votes that Taft can not get Maryland another state that Roosevelt carried in the presi dential primary gave Root eight votes A similar result is observed in Pennsyl vania votes The Taft forces tonight are almost in a rout They are utterly disorganized and demoralized realizing that they are facing the worst and that nothing shqrt of a miracle can now save Mr Taft Miracles are not of everyday occurrence in polities any more than they are in any other realm of mundane affairs TWO POSSIBILITIES DEVELOP' The developments of today leave presidential situation even more chaotic and muddled than heretofore with the following among the possible happenings of the next two or three days: 1 A tremendous movement may de velop looking toward the casting aside of both Taft Roosevelt and the nom ination of a third candidate who will unite the discordant elements of the party 2 If this process of elimination and unification does not take place and the names of Taft Roosevelt Laollette and Cummins go before the convention there is an imminent possibility of a deadlock that will tie up the convention indefi nitely The theory of deadlock loomed up big after the vote on temporary chairmanship was announced Every indication at this writing points to the probability that President Taft can not get a nomination majority 540 votes NO ONE HAS MAJORITY Governor McGovern who received the combined delegate support of Roosevelt Laollette and Cummins polled 502 votes Roosevelt as a candidate for Presi dent will attract some votes from the primary states that McGovern did not get but on the other hand Laollette and Cummins standing as candidates for presidential nomination will hold from Col Roosevelt a total of forty six votes that were counted in the 502 cast for Mc Govern Therefore it is not clear as the field of candidates now stands that any one can control enough votes to win the nomination Herculean efforts wore being made to night to spring a dark horse candidate The hotel corridors buzzed with of a compromise would wipe out ani mosities and bring forth a new Moses to lead the Republican party out of the wilderness Indiana men were pioneers in this in cipient compromise movement President Taft's most conspicuous friends on the Indiana delegation are now ready to ditch him at the drop of a hat if by so doing a man may be found who will give promise of leading the party to victory in November One of the most eminent of President Indiana supporters whose name Is a household word' through out Indiana said to me today: opinion is that within the next twenty four hours you will see the olive brunch extended between the two factions and a sincere effort made to get together on a dark horse candidate That is the logical and sensible thing 'to do and the Republican party always acts sensibly when it gets its second wind PEOPLE WANT WINNER know what the peoplewant I have just come from among them The masses think that it is time to put a stop to all of this crimination and recrimination tht is wrecking the party and nominate a candidate who can win The party owes nothing to Taft and it can not be over looked that he has been turned down and repudiated by Republican states just as fast as they can get 'a whack at him through statewide pripiaries is utter folly to go into this cam paign with supporters Jn the Republican national convention to day put through the first portion of their program by electing Senator ICHhu Root of New York as temporary chairman by a vote of 558 to 502 over Governor Mc Govern of Wisconsin In spite of the fact that Victor Rose water chairman of the national commit tee invariably ruled out of order every motion made by the Roosevelt forces it required more than five hours to reach a vote on the chairmanship The calling of the roll was beset with difficulties from the very first name on the list of delegates 'Governor rancis McGovern of Wisconsin was op ponent There were fourteen scattering votes and four delegates failed to vote ROOT IS JEERED When Senator Root began his people in great numbers began to leave the hall He announced then that he would suspend until all those who wished to go had retired Thousands then left but nearly all the delegates remained and listened to the speech with an intentness of interest very noticeable although it was frequently at the beginning by jeers' and catcalls which came chiefly from Pennsyl vania adherents Tbnight both the Taftand Roosevelt forces are that the vote indi cates that their candidate is Cproner Kentling Dr Kentling employed the physiciamkl conduct the autopsy The report states more than enough of the poison was found to produce death riends of Johnston admitted that they were not surprised as it is known that the doctor was in a close financial condition and when he built his handsome residence on East Third street facing the university campus he placed a heavy mortgage thereon and only recently the building association foreclosed on the property the amount due being more than $8000 a HAD NOT CONVEYED PROPERTY Dr Johnston was granted an extension of time of ten days to make a deed of the house to the association and the ten had just elapsed without the instrument for the conveyance having been made It is believed that this proved a great bur den to him and that in desperation he deliberately planned his self destruction Dr Johnston obtained the poison from James Lowder one of the custodians of the chemical building at the university by telling him he desired enough to kill a dog Unsuspecting the true intention of the professor Mr Lowder says he gave the poison to him This was two weeks ago and it is believed thprofessor carried the poison in his pocket awaiting the end of the spring term of school when he would be relieved of his classes and would have more time fto plan the details of his While in Indianapolis Monday Johnston obtained additional UNANIMOUS Laollotte and Wisconsin while not joining tho Taft forces refused to back McGovern unitedly on the theory that lie could not consistently combine or deal with cither of his opponents In the presi dential race The Wisconsin delegation voted to keep McGovern out of it but lie was proposed by an individual delegate and not only held a large part of the Roosevelt slrcngtli but made inroads in Taft delegations in the South Notably ho captured Hawaii Uncle Pacific sunburst with six dele gates ripped into South Carolina and Georgia and held many of the reputed bolters in Illinois Maryland and syl va nia There were plenty of shocks in the roll call for flit Taft men The test vote with its slim eighteen majority for the admin istration crowd spelled a probable first ba Hot deadlock and
