The top picture shows the edifice as it looked in 1946, contrasted with the restoration, below. The whole roof, the belfry, arches and pillars had to be rebuilt. The great inside hall can seat 25.000 peode. and Mayor Robert F. Wagner, of New York, are Catholics frequently mentioned as strong contenders for the vice presidential nomination.

Whatever the outcome the fact that Democratic leaders are seriously canvassing the field of potential Catholic nominees represents a significant change in political thinking. No Catholic has been nominated for national office in the United States, by either major party, since Al Smith was defeated in the bitterly-fought 1928 election campaign. Smith's Catholic religion was a major issue in that campaign, particularly in the heavily Protestant and traditionally Democratic South. His Republican opponent, Herbert Hoover, carried several southern states in sweeping to victory. It is noteworthy that some southern senators are among the Democrats who are now sympathetic to the idea of nominating a Catholic vice presidential candidate.

In their private discussions on the eve of the convention, these Democrats give weight to three arguments: Stevenson's divorce hurt him politically in 1952, especially among Catholic voters. A Catholic running-mate would be a- good antidote. The United States Catholic population has increased 37.5 per cent since 1945 and now totals more than 33,500,000 men, women and children. It can be assumed that at least one-third of these are adult registered voters. While no informed observer believes that American Catholics vote as a solid religious bloc the existence of any group of more than 11,000,000 vot- cia witu a pieaumea common loyalty is a powerfultemptation to politicians.

Anti-Catholic bias in the South appears to have declined sharply since 1928. This is the observation of both Catholic and Protestant churchmen and it is generally supported by the soundings of politi girls choir have been canceled for the month of August. Presbyterians to Hear Rev. Shoaf Guest speaker tomorrow morning in First Presbyterian Church will be Rev. Harry F.

Miller, pastor. Rev. Shoaf, who has spent several years in the ministry, occupied the local church pulpit during Holy Week services.

He is a member of the Council of Northumberland Presbytery and a member of the committee on church extension and support. Oddities in Hews LOS ANGELES (U.R) Roberta Jean Huggins, 25, indignantly refused to sign a speeding ticket and declared: "I was not doing 75 miles an hour although I may have been going 74."
