The point at which the harmonies of the external world touch the corresponding moral chords of our inner nature is a mystery. It is a part of the great question of tlio relation of sensation to consciousness. We only know that harmonies of sound touch the mind and suggest a moral harmony. So true is this that all these masters of thought whom I am quoting do uot hesitate to name the result as heaven, by which they do not mean any place, nor any fulfillment of earthly expectation, nor any here nor there, but a moral condition which is the outcome of obedience to laws. this pearl charm is a tuberose.

A number of years ago a large number of Auiish people settled in the region of Mount Ayr, Xewtou county. They -were uneducated and cared little for the luxuries of life, but they were industrious, and all of them prospered.

They spent a number of years draining the farms upon which they settled until they became valuable. The recent influx of farmers from Illinois sent this land up to 60. The Amish people considered this a fortune; but, being clannish, not oue farmer would dispose of his belongings without the consent of the settlement. A meeting was accordingly called, and it was decided to put all the farms on the market, and they readily secured buyers. The Amish people made arrangements to take up their homes near Gibson, where they purchased laud.

They chartered a special traiu, and on Jan. 1 the entire settlement, about 100 people iu all, left for their new homes in the south. There are no finer farms in northwestern Indiana than the farms reclaimed from the swamps by these Amish people. Cincinnati Commercial Gazette. Kingman with diverging lines.

William Watson, the English poet, recently wrote a poem denouncing "craven England" for her Armenian perfidy. The hist "official" effort of the new poet laureate, Alfred Austin, was a reply to the scathing sonnet. Watson's poem, which, aside from all other considerations, is worthy of re marriage with the defendant at the bar. When the case had proceeded at some length, E.

O. Fawlkes, a member of the jury, arose and informed the court that he understood that the father of the defendant, Martin Hall, was ou the jury. The court asked if this was correct, and upon being informed that it was requested the attorneys for the defendant to consent to the dismissal of the juror and the substitution of another juror in his place, but Mr. Bromberg of couusel for the defendant refused to allow this to he. dune, and as the law i iounu myseit sitting up in bed.

But one afternoon as we slowed up I noticed something in the open window of the station. As the traiu stopped on the sidetrack it left the door of my car just opposite the window. It was an earthen pot rilled with tuberoses all in full bloom.

They were the finest 1 had ever seen, so large and so creamy. Even at that distance I caught a whiff of their delicious fragrance. I wondered what in the world had come over old Martin, the operator, a crusty old fellow, that he had gone into the flower business, and said to myself, "The old flint has a soft spot, after all." Turning to Jeff, my fellow olerk, I said: "Say, Jeff, look at those tuberoses. Ain't they beauties? By George, I'm going to get "Old Martin will-give you the 1," was Jeff's rather emphatic reply. "I'll risk it," and I sprang out of the car to the platformy, while Jeff stood in the door to see old Martin "give me the 1." I had just broken off one of the trumpet-shaped beauties when -'Help yourself, sir." some one exclaimed iu the sweetest, most musical voice imaginable.

I looked up to see, not old Martin, but. looking straight through the window aud witnessing my most audacious theft, was the sauciest, merriest looking girl I had ever seen.
