At the time these predictions were made with respect to wheat nobody ventured to say that the time would come when the United States would begin to import petroleum or that our own production, vast as it wan and rapidly increasing, would not be sufficient to meet our own demands and provide a surplus for that wonderful world market for American petroleum products which has been established. Petroleum Insufficient. Now froin Washington come figures In which there does lurk some suggestion that in the future the United States is to found importing more and more petroleum so that in great industry there will come a change hitherto wholly unbooked for. The Washington figures report that In the year IMS there were in the Unitd States a littlo under 400,000,000 -barrels of petroluem.

This inous consumption was about greater than the aggregate amount of petroleum taken from our own soil. In other words the day had come when in order to maintain our oil industry we were obliged to go to the oil fields of other nations. Undoubtedly unless there be new and very large oil fields discovered and exploited within the next two or three years, in the United States and Alaska our imports of petroleum will greatly Increase although this country may be at the same lime producing each year at least S50.000,<M barrels of petroleum. If this condition is reported next year and the year after and ho on. then it will be observed that gap is increasing between production or American "oil and the total amount manufactured this country for consumption.
