A6 TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 1996 Money THE SALINA JOURNAL INDUSTRY MARKETS Oregon company buys Honorbuilt SMC the plant's new owner, says it will hire more 'employees, offer higher wages By CAROL LICHTI The Salina Journal "There are benefits to having a Midwest plant. Freight costs could be cut." MINNEAPOLIS Honorbuilt a recre- 1 ational vehicle manufacturing plant in Min, neapolis, is being purchased by an Oregon company that manufactures luxury recreational vehicles. SMC Corporation based in Harrisburg, hopes to double the Minneapolis plants' 100 employees within a year. The plant's name will change to SMC Midwest and employees will have to apply for jobs with the new company. But the plant's general manager Ted Hill and other managers are expected to continue to work for the plant, said Paul Brown, vice president of finance and chief financial officer for SMC.

Brown is in Minneapolis to finalize the sale, the terms of which he did not disclose. The sale is expected to be official June 14. He said the sale should mean better wages and benefits for employees and a stable owner Paul Brown SMC chief financial officer for the plant that will produce more jobs. "We are here for the long term," Brown said. Honorbuilt, which was formerly ElDorado Motor encountered financial difficulty in the past.

"For the past six years, it had been operating hand-to-mouth," Brown said. "It has had a struggle." But SMC, a company with annual revenues of about $148 million and 1,300 employees, will help the Minneapolis plant with efficiency, buying power and better sales and distribution, Brown said. Employees will continue to work four days a week at 10 hours a day and the plant is expected to continue with one shift. SMC has five plants in Oregon that manu- facture the Class A type recreational vehicle, the luxury large motor homes that sell for between $65,000 to $375,000. Honorbuilt makes the ElDorado, a Class recreational vehicle, a smaller, less expensive vehicle that handles more like a van than a bus.

The acquisition of the Minneapolis company will allow SMC to expand into the recreational vehicle market by making the ElDorado vehicles. The Minneapolis plant will also make the Safari, a luxury model, and the Beaver, a Class model like the ElDorado. "There are benefits to having a Midwest plant," Brown said. "Freight costs could be cut 1,000 miles per unit for sales in the east." SMC was started in 1987 by Mathew Perlot, who is still the chairman and chief executive officer of the company. SMC has 30 percent of the luxury motor home market and hopes to incorporate features of the luxury vehicles into its smaller Class models.

Honorbuilt had revenues of about $16 million in 1995, selling about 375 ElDorado units that year. The company is the eighth largest manufacturer of the smaller, Class vehicles. The company sold in 1995 to Wichita car dealer Rusty who had been a shareholder in the company for several years. NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE Name Dlv. PE Vol.
