The Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens Plumeria Society will have plumerias for sale TODAY at Padre Staples Mall The article last Saturday was to get you ready for the sale and to mark it on your calendar My apologies to those who were inconvenienced There will be many beautiful plants available and members of the Society will be there to answer your questions Did you know pineapples and ball moss are related? Both are bromeliads Although these two species are less than ideal houseplants many other bromeliads are superb for the indoors requiring little care and tolerant of low light levels Bromeliads can be separated into two groups Epiphytes grow free from soil absorbing their water and nutrients from the air In nature epiphytes attach themselves to tree trunks settle in branch crotches and in the case of ball moss cling to electrical wires However these bromeliads are not parasites they do no harm to the host tree but simply use it as a perch to gain access to sunlight Terrestrial species are more traditional and grow in the ground with their roots in the soil Many species from both groups make quality house plants Except for those species which grow best attached to a piece of bark bromeliads should be grown in a loose fibrous potting media Most species benefit from water and nutrients in the leaf axil or the cup of the plant Terrestrial species also require water and fertilizer applications to the soil Bromeliads have many attractive features Some species possess exquisite foliage leaves may be green gray maroon spotted striped or a combination Leaves may be grass-like and less than two inches long such as the Tillandsia species example are ball moss and Spanish moss or may be broad and stiff as in the case of the pineapple Several species also have prominent unique flowers which are borne from the cup or center of the plant Much of the time the showy portion is not really a flower but a modified leaf called a bract Since this bract is not delicate tissue like a flower petal these beautiful "blooms" often last for months With more than 2500 species of bromeliads it is difficult to describe their general culture Certain species require special attention but for the most part bromeliads need good bright indirect light The higher the light the better color the bromeliad will show A general rule is to give a plant as much light as it can tolerate without bleaching or burning 4-! -7r le Darlene LOCKE home Ideally relative humidity should be 50 percent to 75 percent If your home is dry provide extra humidity by placing a tray of wet gravel under plants Bromeliads have relatively few insects and diseases However there may occasionally be leaf spots or damage due to an accumulation of salts in the cup of the plant Insects that attack bromeliads include scale mealybligs and spider mites Use recommended pesticides following directions The day following insecticide application drain and then flush the clip of the plant with clean water to remove all chemicals sing rainwater in the leaf cups of your bromeliads is one of the easiest ways to keep them healthy Using pure rainwater will reduce the potential for damage from salts in the water The use of acidic low-salt water promotes the development of show-quality plants Artificially softened water is salty and should never be used on bromeliads Perhaps the most frustrating thing about bromeliads is that they are slow growers However the fact that their blossoms are slow to fade is more than adequate compensation for bromeliad fanciers Keep It Green capitalize on Zellweger's celebrity as Tom Cruise's leading lady in "Jerry Maguire" Henkel said Meanwhile McConaughey's next career move is equally solid He's playing opposite Jodie Foster in "Contact" a sci-fi thriller directed by Robert Zemeckis Tri-Star officials would not confirm a release date for "Chainsaw" but did say the film was headed to theaters with an updated title: "Texas Chainsaw Next Generation" Melvyn Klein a Corpus Christi investor and a co-founder of two companies which have produce major feature films said the low-budget "Chainsaw" is almost guaranteed to make money in distribution "A low-budget film should certainly be economical with a star That's why they'd release it" McConaughey is out of the country promoting "A Time to Kill" and could not be reached for comment on "Chainsaw" said his publicist Jennifer Allen of PMK Agency "We alerted his management that it's going to be released after the first of the year" she said Henkel insists that McConaughey is satisfied with his work in "Chainsaw" He mentioned that a network television interviewer asked McConaughey if he watched his own work "Nah" Henkel recalled the actor saying "What about Chainsaw?" the interviewer shot back "Now that I'll watch" McConaughey said grinning "He's always been very proud of the work he's done (on Chainsaw) and made no bones about it" Henkel said CHAINSAW FROM PAGE 87 remote control that operates his leg A reviewer for Variety attend: ing the Southwest Film and Media Conference more than 18 months ago wrote that Mc-Conaughey in Chainsaw" "goes way way over the top with his mood-swinging menace and tripwire temper And he often is hilarious in his efforts to control his high-tech artificial leg (shades of 'Dr Strangelove')" "It's quite a performance" Henkel said "1 don't think there's any real awareness what a wonderful role this is and what a wonderful job he's done" In dozens of profiles that have appeared on McConaughey the unreleased film gets brief mentiori or is dismissed as junk 'It's one of those horror movies that were all supposed to turn up our noses at" the 50-yearOld Henkel said with a beneath us you know" Austinite McConaughey (pro nounced Ma-CON-a-hay) first garnered attention in the role of a post-high school burnout in the independently produced "Dazed and Confused" McConaughey auditioned and got the lead role of Vilmer in "Chainsaw" before the release of "Dazed and Confused" by Richard Linklater Henkel said he felt "a visceral sense of danger in the room" when McConaughey read for the part "Vilmer was somebody that liked to torment his prey" Working with first-time director Henkel on "Chainsaw" was "hard and physically demand ing" Zellweger said from Los Angeles She played the film's scream kind of a dark film You have to take yourself to places you wouldn't like emotionally The original "Chainsaw" broke new ground in horror filmmaking wowing arthouse critics for its sheer psychological terror and slow torture of victims Henkel and co-writerdirector Tobe Hooper who went on to direct Steven Spielberg's "PolterFeist" became instant celebrities in the art film world But the two unsuspecting screenwriters lost their cut possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bryanston Distributors Inc a movie distribution company with reputed Mafia ties Henkel says The Los Angeles Times documented the mob's infiltration of legitimate moyie-distributing in the 1970s "I've been in more situations that have gone wrong than most people have been in situations that are potentially right" Henkel said He has since scripted his way into the world of Texas art films without much commercial reward As a result of "Chainsaw" Columbia Tri-Star has expressed interest in a suspense-oriented screenplay Henkel said "Hopefully I'll get additional writing and directing work from Chainsaw" Henkel said He sleeps days and writes nights in a dimly-lit wood-frame house that sits on stilts on Mustang Island The buzz in Hollywood is that "Chainsaw" will be released to theaters in January It's already available on video in Japan The January timing is designed to Realize as light intensity increases higher humidity is necessary Typically bromeliad species with hard thick grayish-green or fuzzy foliage will withstand the highest light levels while species with soft green thin leaves require moderate to heavy shade Windows with a southern eastern or western exposure are usually satisfactory for growing bmmehads but real enthusiasts will likely end up with a greenhouse Most introduced species of bromeliads should not be exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees Average home temperatures are normally satisfactory for most varieties- Low humidity is the number one limiting factor in the Darlene Locks a
