One (Continued from Page One bombs on Japanese forward positions in support of ground forces. On New Guinea, several thousand Japanese, caught in a trap between Australian forces advancing along the Huon Peninsula and an American beachhead at Saidor, showed signs of preparations for a showdown battle.

The Australians reported the first stiff resistance from Japanese rear guards in several weeks along the Uenaja River with the heaviest fighting raging near a large Japanese bivouac and engineers' store area three quarters of a mile upstream. The Americans at Saidor were revealed to have extended their beachhead to 11 miles with patrols fanning out to the east and west without meeting enemy resistance. Five Japanese barges loaded with troops and supplies for the trapped Japanese were sunk by Allied motor torpedo boats Friday night at Pommern Bay, north of Saidor, while eight additional barges were wrecked by Allied bombers at Uligan and Sarang harbors, north Madang. Escorted heay and medium bombers again hit the Madang area, silencing guns and starting fires at the Alexishafen airdrome with 92 tons of bombs. FORTS SUPPORT TITO'S PARTISANS attack on the Italian capital or its immediate vicinity.

The Scandinavian Telegraph Bureau claimed the raid cecurred Sunday, but other Nazi sources gave the date as Saturday. (British- based bombers apparently were idle last night.) The Fortresses, escorted by fighters, hit both harbor and railway installations at Pola, which lies at the tip of the Istrian Isthmus in the Adriatic some 40 miles southwest of border city of Flume, in a six-minute Tunderbolt attack. Algiers dispatches said at least three excepticnally large explosions one of which hurled debris 1.000 feet into the air, were witnessed by Fortress crews. Factories and the whole dock area appeared to have been well-covered with bembs. Other bombs were seen to fall on submarine pens, but Algiers sources emphasized that Pola's chief importance lay in its position as a supply base for German forces in Jugoslavia.

With guerilla raids halting overland shipments, the FIFTH SEIZES THREE HEIGHTS (Continued from Page One) were entrenched strongly in a network of log-reinforced pill- boxes that frequently proved immune to even direct shell hits, and the advancing American and British infantry was forced to clear them out with hand grenades and bayonets. The new Allied advances, however, represented a deep penetraticn at both ends of the enemy line and American artillery atop Mount Majo maintained a steady fire on Cassino itself. On the British 8th Army's Adriatic front, deep snowdrifts stalled the ground fighting along a line some eight miles belcw Pescara and the lateral road to Rome. Both sides exchanged heavy artillery and mortar fire, however, and frequent patrol clashes were reported. HOSPITAL Admissions SHAMOKIN HOSPITAL VISITING HOURS Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 6:30 M.

ATLAS SAILOR SURVIVES DIP IN PACIFIC (Centinued from Page One) John the Baptist, and prayed. I had said several 'Hail Mary's' and was on 'Our Father, when I saw the truck lights of a ship. Then whistled as loud as I could." That ship was an Australian corvette, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Weston, and Sarisky's whistle was heard. With engine stopped, the ship played searchlights about for a full five minutes before Sarisky was sighted. Because of the heavy seas, it was impossible to launch a boat and the ship was maneuvered until he was alongside.

35 minutes from the time he fell overboard. True to Australian Naval tradition, they gave him a "tot" of rum, followed by a rubdown and. two days later, transferred him back to the ship in an Australian port. When Sarisky came aboard the Coast Guard-manned ship again, its crew gave the corvette three cheers and was answered in kind Gratitude took more concrete form in the gift of two cartons of cigarettes and five candy bars for each man on the Australian ship and a letter of commendation of a job well done frem Lieutenant Commander George W.
