Just like that, the Bulls had done it again, just like 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1996: They were champions, Jordan was the Finals MVP, the Bulls avoided a seventh game and a Western Conference opponent had come up short in the face of dynastic greatness. When the buzzer sounded, an avalanche of metallic streamers and confetti fell to the court.

Pippen jumped into Jordan's arms, the two hugged and spun around and Coach Phil Jackson ran to join them. "The fifth one was great," Pippen said. "They gave us a hell of a series, but we stepped up like champions do." The three of them, the only members of the Bulls to be around for all five championship years, had survived considerable internal discord and major questions of uncertainty surrounding their futures for next year. But at this moment, they had accomplished the one thing they had set out to do win. "No.

I didn't enjoy this journey -it's been filled with injuries and suspensions, but we had a great run," Jackson said. And aside from Kerr's shot and Kukoc's clinching dunk, Jordan and Pippen had practically done it all in Game 6. Russell hit his fourth 3-pointer and Howard Eisley hit a tough hanging jumper toward the end of the period to put the Jazz up, 70- 61. Jud Buechler pulled the Bulls within six, 70-64, at the end of the quarter, by making a 3-pointer off a scramble for an offensive rebound with 27 seconds left. The Bulls quickly made up almost all of their deficit by starting the fourth quarter with a flurry. De La Hoya turned to Steward following the Whitaker fight after becoming disillusioned with the defensive training tactics of former trainer Jesus Rivero. The 24-year-old De La Hoya knockouts), on a pace to fight five times this year, figures to have an easier target against the stand-up Kamau than he did against the wily and slippery Whitaker. That could mean a return of his knockout power, though Kamau (28-1, 21 knockouts) has never been stopped. CC racer Baldwin dies at 42 From staff reports Corpus Christi race car driver Rick Baldwin, who had been in a coma since a 1986 crash during a NASCAR race in Michigan, died Friday in a San Antonio hospital. He was 42.

Baldwin suffered massive brain injuries after crashing during a qualifying run for the Miller 400 on June 14, 1986, in Brooklyn, Mich. The race, which Baldwin had called his "best chance" at success on the NASCAR circuit, was only his seventh race. Ironically, Baldwin was competing in place of Buddy Arrington, who had been injured during a NASCAR race the previous weekend. Baldwin was born June 10, 1955, in Corpus Christi and lived here until moving to North Carolina in the early 1980s. Baldwin's family was unsuccessful in a 1992 suit against NASCAR in which $150 million in damages were sought.

A state district jury voted 10-2 that the accident was caused by Baldwin, deciding that NASCAR had been neither negligent nor grossly negligent in the crash. The jury also' cleared Baldwin of negligence in the accident. Baldwin is survived by his. wife Deborah; two daughters, Jennifer and Tiffany, all of San Antonio; his father and stepmother, Jim and Edna Baldwin of Mathis; a brother, Gary Dil-, worth of San Antonio; a sister, Desta Kramer of Houston; his mother and stepfather Pat and. Ron Weisenberger of Coppell; and his stepfather John Dilworth of San Antonio.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Motorsports Report FOYT PROTEST DENIED: The U.S. Auto Club on Friday denied protests filed by A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Team Menard, reaffirm: ing its decision to declare Arie Luyendyk the winner of last week's True Value 500.

In the decision, USAC referred to NBA FROM C1 Utah failed to score on its next to possessions, and the United Center erupted with 8:55 left when Kerr buried a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Bulls a 74-73 lead, their first since early in the first quarter. The Jazz took the lead back when Jeff Hornacek pulled up for a 3-pointer with 6:42 left, but they then started exhibiting signs of a team not used to the pressure that comes in the fourth quarter of games with the championship on the line. First, Shandon Anderson was wide open for a dunk that would have put Utah ahead by three. Instead, he inexplicably tried a reverse layup and missed. Jordan came down and drilled a pull-up jumper, giving Chicago an 82-81 lead.

Jordan and Karl Malone then traded baskets, Jordan hit a wide open jumper with 2:01 left and Russell drilled his fifth 3- pointer of the night to tie it at 86- 86 with 1:44 left. What followed were a series of misses, each one more excruciating than the next. Pippen missed twice from in close, Dennis Rodman missed a tip, Malone missed a turnaround, Jordan missed a drive and Anderson a rookie who drew the defensive assignment on Jordan for most of the fourth quarter blew a left-handed layup attempt with 28 seconds left to set up Kerr's game-winner. "Stockton had been leaving me all series (to double team) and I haven't been making them," Kerr said. "It's about time I finally made its rule that a race is considered complete when the checkered flag is displayed.

Officials decided Luyendyk had completed the required 208 laps when Foyt drivers Billy Boat and Davey Hamilton crossed the finish line one-two under the checkered flag. Faulty equipment miscalculated Luyendyk's lap total, and he finished 210 laps before the checkered flag was dropped. MILLER 400: Dale Jarrett, who, went from steady to suspect in recent weeks, proved things were back to normal Friday by winning the pole for the Miller 400 at Michgan Speedway. A week after a victory at Pocono atoned for three straight poor fin-, ishes, Jarrett secured his second pole of the season and fifth of his career with a speed of 183.669 mph. The top five spots were dominated by Chevys.

Joe Nemechek, fastest in practice, qualified second at 183.379 mph. Ricky Craven, the last driver to attempt to qualify, was third.
