Head basketball coach and athletic director at Algona High, Howie Stephenson has coached Bulldog teams to 179 victories and 75 losses. A native of Algona, Howie graduated from Iowa Teachers College (UNI) and coached at Mallard, la., prior to coming to Algona. His teams have captured five conference championships and have been in three state tournaments in his 12 seasons as the Bulldog varsity coach. His 1963-64 squad placed third in the State. Johnson of Algona. He has scored 224 points this year with a 10 point average. Good ball handler and deadly jump shooter. His 22 points paced upset of Storm Lake. Jim Harris Jim is the son of Dr. and Mrs. James Harris II of Algona. A senior, Jim is the sixth man on the squad and a very dependable replacement. Averages 5 points and 4 rebounds per game. His 276 points and 13 point average for the season rank second for the Bulldogs. Great defensive player also President of local F.C.A. Huddle Group Randy, tallest Bulldog at 6'8", Is the starting center as a junior. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Roeber of Whittemore, Has scored 172 points and has a 50% field goal average. Averages 8 rebounds per game. A rugged rebounder. Gary Walker The only sophomore on the varsity this year Gary Is 6'3" and a tough competitor. He U the ton of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Walker of Algona Averages 7 rebounds and 5 points per game - with a 41% accuracy mark from the field. A good jumper. r Kent Espe i A 6'2" senior, Kent is the third Espe on as many Algona state tourney teams. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Espe of Whittemore, Kent leads the team with averages of 10 rebounds and 16.6 points. A forward, he ha* scored 365 points thus far has an 82% accuracy mark from the free throw line. Gordy Zeigler * * Dick Manske Neal O'Brien A 6'6" senior center, Gordy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Zeigler of Algona. Averages 4 rebounds and 3 points per game and is tough under the boards. Has seen action in nearly all of Algona's games. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Manske of Algona, Dick is the first substitute at guard a* a junior. Sharp ball handler and passer, averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds this year. Very aggressive defensively. N /A'I '* the S °" ° f Mn Qnd Mrs> Tim O'Brien of Algona and a senior forward at 6'2". Has averaged 55% from the field and 68% from the free throw line as a reserve. Good competitor and rebounder. Dan Smith Dan, a senior guard, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith, Jr. of Algona.
