When I challenged my assailants to name man not over forty-one years of age? who had done more faithful party work or more loyally served the people, the bright young man omits the "not." When after alluding to a paragraph in his paper, I said, "I deny that. I never charged etc." the humorous young man leaves out the period and makes one sentence of two. I cannot of course allude to all the "inaccuracies" even In the Observer, to say nothing of those papers that make no (point of accuracy. The Aahevllle paper charged with being unsafe, noted the fact that I had appeared for plaintiffs against railroads, and thought the difference between my views and those of the Southern Railway and American Tobecco Company fo serious that if Governor I could not treat those corporations fairly. They prefer to spread abroad an untrue and unsupported charge, hoping in their anxiety to wrong me that some good citizen will be deceived thereby. When the Observer published a challenge to my services as representative, it was neither just to itself nor fair to Its readers. It knew that since my career began in Congress, we had not had a Democratic House, or administration. It knew that not even the distinguished leader of the Democrats, nor even all the Democrats combined, had been able to accomplish any general legislation during that time. The Intimation that I ought to have accomplished such legislation under such circumstances is a compliment far greater than I deserve.

Minority members can vote their judgment and maintain the principles of their party. No critic can dispute that I have In these respects performed my full duty. The Observer knows, or could know by consulting the records or inquiring of any Senator or member that in all matters pertaining to my State or district. I have likewise performed my full duty in committee, in the House, and before the departments. In the course of his speech, heisaia: I an in hearty sympathy with the great temperance sentiment that is so steadily 'conquering our State. What part ot my recora had been unsausiactory- to them-: If I have put their opposition on too narrow basis, they can enlarge it for the sane of information.

Their criticisms of me on the subsidy showed more than a mere difference of opinion, tor these papers preach toleration of opinion. Criticism of a Democrat representative for op- posing a railroad subsidy i whose an- continuance, bv the way, did: not bring disaster to the business interests of the South) was not more surprising than was in later months the tosiceringr in Democratic papers of a Republican slander upon Democratic officials. When did Democratic papers ever, before the Ftth District Combine story was fabricated, repeat a Republican slander upon Democrats, except' to denounce it? In a former' speech 1 said: "Every paper in this State so far as I recall that sided with the railroads and criticised me for opposing the railroad subsidy Is today against my nomination for Governor. If I am correctly informed, the Wilmington Messenger, Charlotte Observer, the Asheville Gazette-News, and the Raleigh Evening Times, are all against me. The unanimity with which the columns of these papers and others that follow them encouraged that political slander, originating in the Republican State Organ, usually called the Fifth District Combine, after myself and others had denounced it as utterly false.

Indicates both the determination of their opposition and the character of the contest they are willing to wage against me." The Messenger and Times have taken exceptions to my remarks. In it he says that if Glenn is a western man, then Kitchin is a western man: If Kitchin is an eastern man, then Glenn is an eastern man, for, he says, they are from "the same congressional That they live far apart is not to be considered in his logic. By his simple process, if Charlotte is this side of the mountains, so is Marshall; or if Marshall is "across the great mountains, so is Charlotte, for they are in "the same congressional district." By the $ame simple process seven yeats ago Wilmington was a western town or Charlotte was a seaport, for; they were in "the same Congresslon district." I assert that the 'fimes could not use such sophistry, unless hostility clouded its intelligence.

The Charlotte Observer charged my Union speech with inaccuracy. In my next speech I defied that paper to anAplfv cfncrlA Inappiiranu In ita i. it accepted the chal- lenge, and showed a surprising weakness by copying much derogatory matter from the Asheville Gazette-News. The able editor of the Observer Is hard put when he resorts to irrelevant matter in other columns in support 6f a clearcut contention. The Observer on its own responsibility specified only two inaccuracies in my speech, and then referred to the com- plaints of' the Wilmington Messenger ana tne Evening Times, which i have already mentioned.

The two specifications were, first, that I was inaccurate in I saying that it had published as a purpose of the conservatives the retirement of Josephus Daniels ffrom the National Committee, up-1 port of my statement I cite that published in its issue of March 1907, a letter from its correspond ent.
