people realize they have something to offer and teaches them how to share their experience By Scott Williams OF THE CALLER-TIMES Carmen Costante seldom ventured into the world outside her Westside home before graduating in spring 1992 from the clothing master volunteer program administered by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service A native of Mexico Costante moved to Corpus Christi 10 years ago with her husband Ricardo and despite repeated attempts to learn English she still feel comfortable speaking the language So she felt scared whenever she had to hazard into the English-speaking Costante 33 is looking for ways to earn money from sewing skills learned in the clothing master volunteer program She recently finished teaching a beginning sewing class and she and her former students belong to a volunteer group at Crockett Elementary School not the same person as said Costante speaking through an interpreter more sure of myself got a lot more confidence in myself and my interpersonal relationships have been enhanced as a Costante paid back the 25 hours of training she received by teaching a three-month beginning sewing class Although terrified at first she said she eventually felt at ease with her class and now she considers them her compadrajes a Spanish word usually used to describe the relationship between parents and godparents Costante who had no sewing experience when she enrolled in the program uses her newfound skills to make clothes for herself and her children She recently made a set of kitchen curtains and earlier this year made 23 costumes for the Crockett Christmas parade She and her former students have considered making decorative pillows to sell and Costante has applied for a job at the Haggar Apparel Co plant in Robstown learned a lot beginning Feb 1 Dennis Moore general manager said TCI added the networks because of consumer demand He said viewers were able to preview programming like Country Music Television The Cartoon Network and (an entertainment network) in October and November and expressed a desire to have them added to the cable lineup Moore said TCI also will add KAJA (a local Telemundo affiliate) The Learning Channt Starz (a premium movie chan- nel) and FX (a second network of Fox programming scheduled to begin June 1) Moore said TCI will not drop any networks it currently offers KAJA will be available to basic in 199! thanks to a $10000 grant from the Levi Strauss Foundation to the Texas Agricultural Extension Service Talma Benavides Nueces County home economics extension agent said the program is designed to refine the sewing skills of low-income residents so they can earn money and teach other low-income residents to sew Participants go through 25 hours of training and pay back their training by volunteering to teach at least 15 families to sew They must have some sewing try not to let lack of resources keep us from training or having a student Benavides said She said she hopes the program which now is open to all Nueces County residents will encourage women to use their skills to make money whether sewing for the public teaching classes or working for a clothing business Benavides said
